Abstract

This study examines the role and function of public relations (PR) in supporting the implementation of the Child-Friendly School (CFS) program at SMK Nurul Inaroh Bangsalsari, an Islamic boarding school–based educational institution. Using a descriptive qualitative approach with in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and institutional document analysis, this research identifies a unique pattern of internal communication an adaptive semi-closed model in which strategic decisions undergo a tiered deliberative process involving teachers, the principal, and the foundation. The findings reveal that PR within the pesantren context plays a dual role: as an information mediator and as a guardian of institutional legitimacy and values, distinguishing it from PR practices in general schools. This study expands the concept of internal public relations by emphasizing the importance of moral legitimacy, authoritative structure, and participatory engagement in maintaining organizational communication effectiveness within value-based institutions. Conceptually, the findings propose an initial framework of Pesantren-Based Communication Governance as an institutional communication model that balances internal control with participatory collaboration.

Abstract

The sustainability of Islamic education financing has become a major challenge amid increasing demands for educational quality and the limitations of conventional funding sources. This study focuses on examining entrepreneurship management based on adaptive strategies as an effort to ensure the sustainability of Islamic education financing at Pondok Pesantren Miftahul Ulum Banyuputih Kidul, Jatiroto, Lumajang. This research employed a qualitative approach with a case study design to gain an in-depth understanding of pesantren entrepreneurship practices. Data were collected through observations, in-depth interviews with the pesantren leader, business unit managers, the treasurer, and students, as well as documentation. Data analysis was conducted using the Miles and Huberman model, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the sustainability of Islamic education financing is determined by the pesantren’s ability to analyze internal and external environments, develop innovative and flexible entrepreneurial units, and integrate Islamic values such as trustworthiness, honesty, blessing, and public benefit (maslahah) into adaptive strategies. Adaptive strategies enable the pesantren to respond to market dynamics, social changes, and technological developments without compromising its identity and mission of Islamic education. The implications of this study suggest that entrepreneurship management based on adaptive strategies can serve as an alternative model for strengthening sustainable and ethical economic independence in pesantren and can be applied to other Islamic educational institutions.

Abstract

This study examines entrepreneurial management in Islamic boarding schools as a strategy for financing Islamic education by analyzing the gap between existing economic potential and its actual contribution to education funding. Empirically, Islamic boarding schools possess diverse entrepreneurial resources derived from internal assets, social networks, and institutional capital. However, in practice, education financing remains dominated by conventional and routine sources, particularly student tuition fees. This research employed a qualitative approach with a case study design conducted at Miftahul Ulum Besuki Islamic Boarding School. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation involving key informants, including the head of the boarding school, the treasurer, and alumni. Data analysis followed the Miles and Huberman interactive model, encompassing data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal three main issues: the dominance of student tuition fees as the primary source of education financing, the limited and incidental contribution of boarding school entrepreneurial activities, and the presence of an entrepreneurial managerial gap characterized by weak strategic planning, an unclear institutional structure, and limited managerial competence. These findings indicate that the core challenge in Islamic boarding school education financing lies not in the absence of entrepreneurial potential, but in insufficient managerial capacity to optimize that potential. This study highlights the need for strengthening entrepreneurial management in a planned, integrated, and sustainable manner to achieve financial independence in Islamic education and to serve as a reference for boarding school managers and policymakers.
