Abstract

It is important to analyze the use of figurative language in song lyrics. That is why the researcher wants to examine figurative language more thoroughly, especially in the song "rewrite the stars" Therefore, this research will concentrate on the figurative language and the context of song lyrics. The present study employed the qualitative method in order to examine more thoroughly and solve problems in this review. The researchers collect data from several sources, i.e., journals, the internet, or other written sources. It was concluded as follows: In Comparative Figurative Language, was found data in simile, personification, and Metaphor. The personification found was 1 data. In Contradictive Figurative Language, it was found litotes, irony, and paradox. The only one Contradictive Figurative Language that was not found. It was hyperbole. The data of litotes was 1 data. the data of irony was 1 data. The data of paradox was 1 data. In Correlative Figurative Language, there are four kinds. The data of allusion was 1 data. The data of ellipsis was 1 data. The data of allusion was 1 data. this data also has a symbol in figurative language. The word "stars" in sentence "rewriting the stars" has a symbol as relationship. So that is why this data classified as symbol in figurative language. The data of metonymy was 1 data, and the data of synecdoche was 1 data. Based on the result analysis, this song lyric had many figurative languages. It means this song lyric tried to use figurative language to express the feeling or idea imaginatively. In other word, this song lyric tried to create a special image and bring out one's emotions.

Abstract

This research is titled Code Mixing Used by The Teachers in Teaching English at Dharma Private English Course. The objective of this research is to: 1) analyze the types of code-mixing inTeaching English at Dharma Private English Course, 2) analyze the reason of code-mixing in Teaching English at Dharma Private English Course. Data were analyzed using content analysis method based on the theory proposed by Muysken (2000) to identify types and Juu's (2009) theory and interviews with teachers from Dharma Private English Course to explain the reasons for code mixing. The findings of this study indicate that there are three types of code mixing that appear in teacher utterances: insertion (subject, object, and time adverbial), alternation (clause), and congruent lexicalization (noun phrase, verb phrase, and phonological structure) based on Muysken's theory. In terms of reasons for code mixing, there are two reasons that occur during the teaching and learning process: Language Dominance and Psycholinguistic Motivation based on theory Juu's (2009). And there is one main reason why teachers at Dharma Private English Course use code mixing in teaching, which is Improved Knowledge of Vocabulary.

Abstract

This study investigates the role of emojis in language learning on social media, with a particular focus on the Instagram account @englishwithlucy. The research aims to provide insights for educators and learners by analyzing the description, interpretation, and explanation of emoji usage. Employing a qualitative approach, the study uses Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) model and collects data through documentation and netnography methods. The analysis reveals significant findings regarding the communication strategies employed by @englishwithlucy and their impact on language learners. The primary objectives were to examine the types, frequency, and integration of emojis in the account's discourse. Key findings include: 1) Emojis serve as crucial communication tools that enhance engagement and facilitate effective communication by conveying emotions and creating relatability, consistent with previous research. 2) Emojis reinforce messages and contextualize vocabulary, aiding in comprehension and retention, which aligns with existing studies. 3) The account deliberately avoids negative emojis to maintain a positive and encouraging tone, fostering a supportive learning environment, as supported by current literature. 4) Social and cultural contexts significantly influence emoji usage, with the account selecting emojis that have common interpretations across cultures to ensure clarity and inclusivity. Overall, the strategic use of emojis on @englishwithlucy not only enhances engagement and communication but also contributes to a vibrant and interactive learning environment. These findings contribute to the growing body of knowledge on the educational significance of emojis and underscore their importance as integral components of language and communication on social media platforms.

Abstract

The title of this research is “Illocutionary Acts Found in Dinosaur Prison Movie”. The illocutionary act is a central category in speech act theory. Illocutionary act is accomplished via utterance with a communicative intention. All data analyzed in this research comes from the Movie Dinosaur Prison. The method used in this research is a descriptive qualitative approach. The analysis of this data employed the illocutionary act theory presented in Searle's book titled “Expression and Meaning: Studies in the Theory of Speech Acts” (1979). This theory was utilized to examine the various types of illocutionary acts evident in the data. Apart from that, another theory sourced from Leech's book “Pragmatics of Politeness” (2014), was employed to assess the function of illocutionary acts. This research employs three primary methods: Data Source, Data Analysis, and Data Collection. Furthermore, the examination of illocutionary act yielded a total of 40 utterances in this movie, they are assertive, directive, commissive, expressive, and declaration. Overall, the findings of this research highlight the type and function of illocutionary act in the “Dinosaur Prison” movie. The most dominant type of illocutionary act identified in this movie is the Assertive illocutionary act, which predominated due to the characters predominantly making forceful statements intended to influence others to take action.

Abstract

This research is a classroom action research (PTK) which aims to improve students' vocabulary through learning media using board games in class IV A of Bali Bilingual School elementary school. The subjects of this research were all students of class IV A which amounted to 17 students. While the object of this research is to improve students' vocabulary by using board games with contextual teaching and learning methods at Bali Bilingual School elementary school. This research was carried out with steps namely planning, implementing, observing and reflecting. The data of the research were analyzed descriptively with 2 types of data, namely quantitative data and qualitative data. The results of the initial test showed that the average score of students' vocabulary skills was only 64 which was in the low category with a classical 42%. After the research was conducted in cycle I, there was an increase in the students' average score to 79 which is included in the sufficient category with 88% classical in cycle II. Based on the result, it can be concluded that board game technique can improve students' vocabulary skill in class IV A of Bali Bilingual School.

Abstract

This research is entitled “Translation of Metaphors Within the Lyrics of Queen’s Songs” and was made to identify metaphors contained in several Queen’s songs, furthermore is to find out the meaning contained of the metaphorical lyrics written. Data sources were obtained from Queen’s songs on A Night at the Opera, Queen II, and Jazz albums. Data samples were obtained through the lyrics contained from Queen’s Official YouTube music videos. The theoretical foundation used in compiling this research is the theory of metaphor proposed by Marcella (2017), and Nurgiyantoro (2017) and the theory of translation proposed by Frans Sayogie (2014). The method used in this research is a qualitative method, starting with collecting metaphor samples contained in three different Queen songs from three different albums, then the samples are analyzed to find out the meaning or message contained in each metaphor samples and then translated into Indonesian (TL). The results of this research presented a total of 23 metaphorical sentences, and this study concludes about the importance of translating metaphorical sentences appropriately and acceptably without losing the message contained in the metaphorical sentences, in this case the songwriter uses metaphors to convey the depiction of something based on events and personal experiences of the songwriter.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze impoliteness strategies found in the Instagram comments of Jennie, a famous celebrity. The study employs a discourse analysis approach to identify and categorize various impoliteness strategies that may appear in these comments. Research data were collected from comments posted on Jennie's Instagram posts within a specific time frame. The results of the study reveal several impoliteness strategies commonly found in these comments, such as insults, mockery, and the use of offensive language. Additionally, the research identifies the contexts or situations that may trigger the use of these impoliteness strategies. Data analysis is conducted qualitatively, citing examples of comments that illustrate each impoliteness strategy. The findings of this research can provide insights into how celebrities like Jennie can become targets of impoliteness on social media and may assist in the development of strategies for handling and managing impolite comments on social media platforms. The study also offers a deeper understanding of social media users' behavior when interacting with public figures and the cultural and social implications of impoliteness strategies in online communication.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the antonymy and synonym existed in a short story titled “The Little Match Girl” by Hans Christian Andersen. This research employs a qualitative semantics analysis to investigate the underlying meanings and implications of the language used in "The Little Match Girl," a short story written by Hans Christian Andersen. Using antonymy and synonymy as the main focus, the research demonstrates how these semantic elements can be used to convey meaning and shape the underlying themes, motifs, and messages of the story. The instrument of this research was the researcher herself. Document analysis as the data collection technique, and document analysis as the data analysis technique. The data for this research was collected through reading deeply and analysis of "The Little Match Girl," which was chosen as the source of this research. The results of this research demonstrated the value of semantics as a grand theory in literary analysis, and highlights the importance of antonymy and synonymy as powerful tools for conveying meaning in literature. The analysis of this short story provided a deeper understanding of the meanings and implications of the language used, and how it contributes to the story's themes, motifs, and messages. These findings could be used as a model for further analysis of literature texts and can provide insight for future research on semantics.

Abstract

This research was proposed to reveal and analyze the language variations used and how college students utilize these variations daily conversation. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method. The main data of this research was the written status uploaded by college students on social media: Facebook and Instagram. The researcher then cited and captured students' posts representing language variation, classifying the types of language variations including slang, code switching & mixing, gender, colloquial language, formal & informal context, dialect to describe how the language was used. Documentation represents the final technique of data collection. The data was analyzed using Miles and Huberman theories (2014). It included collecting, reducing, classifying, and drawing conclusions from data. The validity of the data used in this study was triangulation of sources, methods, and theory. Based on the conclusion is included in the type of regional dialect, because it is a variant of the language used in a particular area. For example, Indonesian Makassar dialect, Jakarta dialect of Bali dialect etc. Although the dialects used in each region can be united with Indonesian to communicate both formally and informally. It's just that there is a difference in emphasis on the letters of a particular letter in each dialect. The intonation of sounds used in pronunciation also tends to vary from region to region. However, this does not affect in Indonesian language.

Abstract

The topics discussed in this paper are related to the language function used by local drivers at Tanah Lot in the context of the situation. This topic was chosen because of the language function used by local drivers in Tanah Lot as a daily routine to lift passengers to their destinations. The analysis focused on two main issues. What kind of language functions are used by local drivers at Tanah Lot Area, and what expressions are used in local driver conversations at Tanah Lot Area? The main theory used to analyze data is taken from the Function theory in English proposed by John Blundell (1982). The collected data is analyzed descriptively to find out the type of language function. The results of the study show that there are several types of language functions used by local drivers at Tanah Lot Area when the driver and passengers have a conversation. The findings show that drivers are able to express and use language functions related to the situation in which they are in and who they are talking to. Moreover, they are able to make communication understood by each other. According to research, the phrases used by drivers are mostly related to grammatical errors. This situation is biased due to the driver's lack of knowledge as respondents in their grammar, basic education, or their experience, or sometimes they remain influenced by their native language.
