Abstract

This community service program aims to strengthen culture-based tourism rooted in local wisdom in Purbayan Tourism Village through a collaborative partnership between Indonesia and Thailand. This service was held in the purbayan tourism village and the kings of Mataram who lived near Purbayan. This event was attended by 25 people from the management of Purbayan tourist village and representatives from Thailand. This community service activity lasted for 3 days, from May 20 to 23, 2024. Utilizing a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach, the program was designed to empower local communities in identifying, developing, and promoting their unique cultural assets as sustainable tourism products. The activities included community capacity building workshops, development of experiential cultural tourism packages, international cultural exchange events, and digital marketing training. As a result, the community demonstrated increased awareness and participation in preserving and promoting their cultural heritage. Four thematic tourism packages were developed, integrating traditional arts, crafts, culinary experiences, and spiritual heritage. The collaboration with Thai tourism practitioners enriched local insights on sustainable tourism management and inspired innovations in storytelling and community-based governance. In addition, the program improved the digital competencies of local youth, leading to enhanced online visibility of the village. This initiative successfully illustrates how integrating local wisdom with international collaboration can foster inclusive, sustainable, and culturally rich tourism development. It also serves as a replicable model for other cultural villages seeking to build resilient tourism ecosystems grounded in community empowerment.

Abstract

Banana is a climacteric fruit that continues to ripen after harvesting, and the ripening process plays a crucial role in determining its market value, taste, and consumer safety. In Tawangmangu, a highland region of Central Java, many banana fruit sellers still employ traditional and unsafe methods for ripening, including the use of non-food-grade chemicals. This community service program aimed to enhance the knowledge and practices of 10 local banana sellers by providing participatory training on natural and safe ripening techniques, with a focus on Ambon bananas (Musa paradisiaca var. sapientum). The training combined theoretical education with hands-on practice in using ethylene-based and hygienic ripening methods. Pre- and post-test evaluations revealed a significant increase in participants’ understanding of postharvest physiology and food safety. Furthermore, 80% of the sellers demonstrated the ability to construct and apply low-cost ripening chambers using local materials, and reported reduced fruit spoilage, improved customer satisfaction, and increased marketability. The program successfully bridged the knowledge gap and introduced a practical, low-resource solution aligned with sustainable development goals. This model has the potential to be replicated in other rural agricultural markets to improve food safety and support local economic empowerment.

Abstract

Bungah District is known as the center of the Songkok industry in Gresik Regency and has significant economic potential. However, the sustainability of this business faces serious challenges, including market stagnation due to low digital literacy and the absence of halal product assurance, which is now an absolute requirement for the global market. The inability to adapt to technology makes it difficult for local products to penetrate modern marketplaces. This community service program aims to enhance the global competitiveness of Songkok MSMEs by adopting Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology in marketing strategies and accelerating business legitimacy. The approach used is Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) integrated with the Participatory Learning and Action (PLA) method. This activity actively involved 30 Songkok artisans through stages of socialization, technical training in creating visual content with Canva AI, and assistance with registering SiHalal accounts. Program effectiveness was measured using comparative pre-test and post-test analysis. The results showed a significant increase in partners’ average understanding, rising from an initial score of 10% to 82.5% post-intervention. In addition to improving cognitive competence, this activity successfully produced tangible outputs, including 28 AI-based professional digital catalog designs, 30 active social media business accounts, and 30 draft documents for halal certification submissions under the self-declare scheme. The program concludes that integrating efficient AI technology with compliance with Sharia regulations effectively increases partners' self-efficacy to transform from traditional markets into a competitive, sustainable export ecosystem.
