Abstract

The ascendance of English as the world’s dominant lingua franca is revolutionizing English Language Teaching (ELT) at every level. This acknowledges the validity of contextually suitable English variations. Even if this theoretical change is recognized, implementing it in the classroom remains a problem. This study aimed to examine how Indonesian English lecturers view Global Englishes (GE). Specifically, it aimed to measure their familiarity with GE principles, their attitudes toward modifying typical language-based assessments, and their assessed preparedness to implement such modifications. This study used a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design. The quantitative phase consisted of a census survey of 16 full-time instructors. This employs the ‘Survey of Knowledge, Attitudes, and Readiness Regarding GLOBAL ENGLISHes Principles in Language Assessment (SKAR-GE).' This was followed by a qualitative phase that included interviews with 10 lecturers to help explain the survey results. The analysis showed a mismatch between thinking and doing. Lecturers indicated a level of acquaintance with Global Englishes (GE) but showed deficiencies in objective knowledge (41.67% correct). This person mistakes English as a Lingua Franca with ‘broken English.’ They were ‘cautiously open’ to new ideas. They respected communicative pragmatics, but when GE principles went against traditional grammatical benchmarks in evaluation, they were unsure and resistant. The study finds that Indonesian English lecturers are usually open to GE ideas, but they cannot switch to GE-informed assessment because they do not grasp it well enough, hold strong native-speaker beliefs about assessment, and lack sufficient support and models.

Abstract

Many Indonesian EFL students lack of exposure to English and have difficulties with listening comprehension; more significantly, they are rarely exposed to naturally occurring, authentic spoken discourse in their learning environments, which can better mirror their needs in real-world communication. The study was a classroom-based study on the application of TED Talks in English Club activities in a senior high school and investigated how it could impact not only students' listening achievement of students, but also their use of self-regulated learning strategies. This was done during the implementation by way of listening tests, questionnaires, and a weekly learning journal written by the students. The listening results of the students were significantly improved with a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05) and a high effect size reported, as the mean score of the students on the pre-test was 64.11 and the post-test was 81.04. Along with the test results, the data from the journal and questionnaire revealed that the majority of students could plan, monitor, and control their learning when they engaged in listening activities.

Abstract

The study of Victorian literature is crucial in order to gain a comprehensive understanding of literary works as a medium for criticizing patriarchal social structures. In the context of this study, this is particularly relevant in terms of constructing female identity and roles. Elizabeth Barrett Browning's poem Aurora Leigh has been extensively studied in the context of feminism and gender relations. However, studies of this poem using Mary Wollstonecraft's liberal feminist perspective are relatively limited. This study aims to analyze Aurora's struggle to attain intellectual freedom and independence for women. In addition, this study also discusses her struggle to reject patriarchal norms and traditional gender roles in the Victorian era. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method with close reading techniques. The theoretical framework used in this study is Mary Wollstonecraft's liberal feminism in A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792). The results show that Aurora is represented as a rational woman who demands education, freedom of thought, and rejects the institution of marriage that limits her freedom. Aurora's struggle ultimately voices the principles of liberal feminism regarding rationality, education, and women's independence in a patriarchal society.

Abstract

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in various sectors, including education, has been widespread. An international school that prioritizes bilingualism, an integrated curriculum, and learning facilities has actively adopted technology in its learning process. This study focuses on (1) understanding how AI is used to support the learning process, (2) the impact of the use of AI on student motivation, and (3) understanding the advantages and disadvantages of AI in English learning. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data collection techniques used semi-structured interviews and mini-observation. A participant of this study is a teacher at an international elementary school who used an AI learning process. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis to obtain themes that emerged from the data findings. This study found that the use of AI in international elementary schools is high, with several AI-based applications such as Grammarly, MagicSchool AI, Canva AI, Word Wall, Twinkl, and YouTube. The use of AI in learning can also increase student motivation and enthusiasm. Easy access and abundant references are benefits offered by AI. Although accompanied by the disadvantage that this causes dependence. It is hoped that this research can be a reference source for other schools wishing to implement AI in learning.
