Abstract

This study investigates the challenges faced by students in expressing critical thinking and evaluates the implementation of the Case-Based Method in an English Debate and Critical Thinking (EDCT) course. Using a qualitative research design, data were collected from 35 undergraduate students through classroom observations, weekly reflections, and instructor interviews. The study identifies three primary challenges: a lack of understanding of debate fundamentals, insufficient critical thinking practice due to large class sizes, and limited knowledge of current issues, all of which hindered students’ ability to construct and articulate arguments effectively. To address these challenges, the study introduces the IDR (Introducing, Debating, Reviewing) framework. In the "Introducing" phase, students are given a preview of topics and motions, enhancing preparation and engagement. The "Debating" phase employs the British Parliamentary format with randomized roles, encouraging critical analysis from multiple perspectives and fostering adaptability. The "Reviewing" phase emphasizes peer feedback and collaborative learning, allowing students to refine their argumentation skills and deepen their understanding of the issues. The findings demonstrate the effectiveness of the Case-Based Method in improving students’ critical thinking and debate performance. It promotes active learning, enhances engagement, and develops essential analytical and communication skills. The study highlights the importance of integrating real-world issues and interactive practices into large classroom settings to overcome existing challenges. This research provides practical implications for educators seeking to implement effective pedagogical strategies in debate and critical thinking courses.

Abstract

Debate serves as a vital method in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning, offering students a platform to enhance their speaking skills. However, EFL students often encounter challenges in debates, including the use of vague language. This study investigates the occurrence and patterns of vague language (VL) in EFL students’ debates, aiming to fill a gap in the literature regarding its impact in educational settings. Employing discourse analysis, data were collected from debate transcripts of 24 fourth- semester students at a public university in Central Java, Indonesia. The findings revealed 261 instances of vague language out of 9,317 words spoken, with vague possibility indicators being the most frequent (52.11%). While vague intensifiers and subjectivizer were present, they did not match the frequency of vague possibility indicators. The analysis illustrates the strategic importance of vague language in debates, despite its potential stemming from limited language proficiency. VL served various communication purposes: generalizing statements, navigating limited knowledge and proficiency, maintaining face wants and politeness, giving the right amount of information, saving time by simplifying communication, defending arguments confidently, being a rhetorical device, adding emotion, and helping to express complex ideas. Moreover, the study highlights the need to enhance both linguistic skills and strategic tactics among students to navigate complex debate scenarios effectively. The implications underscore the importance of addressing linguistic proficiency in EFL education, integrating explicit instruction on identifying and avoiding vague language, and fostering a culture of linguistic awareness in the classroom to promote effective communication skills among students.

Abstract

For teaching and student learning, textbooks are a vital and widely used resource. The purpose of this study was to assess the unit design in "Bahasa Inggris kelas XI Semester I" to respond the post-pandemic Covid-19. This study was classified as a textbook evaluation. Document analysis and interviews were used to collect data. Miles' and Huberman's model was considered to be used in data analysis through data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The study finds that the textbook addresses only three of the six suggested indicators, lacks appropriate images that can aid students' comprehension, and has no clear grading system or instructions for students, which can lead to confusion and undermine their ability to complete tasks successfully. The study recommends that future textbook writers should consider appropriate visuals to complement the text, use pictures as symbols or icons, and provide explicit instructions to guide students towards achieving learning objectives. The findings of the study can inform future textbook writers, teachers, and curriculum developers to improve the quality of English language education in Indonesian schools. Moreover, the study highlights the need for textbooks to adapt to the new normal of remote learning.

Abstract

Indonesian teen films play a significant role in shaping youth perspectives on identity, sexuality, and agency. While recent teen films such as Dua Garis Biru (2019), Yuni (2021), and Like & Share (2022) have explored progressive themes of teenage sexuality, many other Indonesian teen films continue to amplify gendered ideologies, both through their visual and narrative strategies. This paper examines Di Bawah Umur (2020) using Mulvey’s theory of the male gaze to analyze how cinematography, framing, and character representation contribute to the objectification of female characters. The findings show that although Di Bawah Umur presents itself as advocating adolescent reproductive health, it paradoxically sustains male-centric perspectives that undermine female agency. By foregrounding how patriarchal ideologies are subtly reproduced in youth-oriented cinema, this paper extends discussions in Indonesian film studies and gender representation. The result of this study offers a critical lens for scholars, educators, and filmmakers to interrogate how teen films construct gendered meanings and why such representations matter for young audiences in Indonesian society nowadays.

Abstract

With an eye towards Aisha, an exchange student negotiating British table etiquette at a traditional Sunday roast, this research investigates the evolution of cultural intelligence via a narrative text called “Sunday Roast and Silent Guidelines”. With the four-dimensional Cultural Intelligence (CQ) framework namely cognitive, metacognitive, motivating, and behavioral which the study follows Aisha's acquisition of fresh cultural knowledge, considers past presumptions, modifies her behavior, and maintains curiosity in the face of uncertainty. Based on the results, especially in educational environments, personal stories seem to be low-risk yet powerful instruments for improving intercultural competency. Emotionally interesting events enable students to find underlying cultural values and react correctly to foreign social signals. This paper supports the use of narrative-based techniques in English and multicultural classes. These tales not only raise understanding of different cultures but also help pupils to be more flexible and sympathetic-qualities that are vital in a society going global. Moreover, narrative books let students absorb multicultural lessons by means of relevant characters and scenarios. Seeing Aisha's quiet learning approach helps teachers to better grasp how their students view cross-cultural encounters. In the end, this method promotes critical thinking and gets students ready for significant participation in many cultural settings.

Abstract

This paper explores the multifaceted symbolism of rain in ten modern poems, examining its role as a vehicle for emotional comfort amid the struggles of human existence. Drawing on works by poets such as Mary Oliver, Langston Hughes, Pablo Neruda, and Edgar Allan Poe, the analysis reveals how rain operates as both a metaphor for melancholy and a catalyst for renewal. Using a comparative thematic approach grounded in close textual analysis, the study investigates how rain imagery reflects intersections between emotion, culture, and environment in modern poetic expression. The discussion highlights how rain imagery serves personal introspection, cultural identity, and collective healing, especially in contexts marked by historical hardship or environmental scarcity. The paper’s novel contribution lies in its synthesis of emotional and ecological readings of rain symbolism, demonstrating how this natural motif bridges inner psychological states and broader cultural narratives. By tracing the dual nature of rain—as a source of sadness and as a rejuvenating force—the paper underscores its enduring thematic relevance in modern poetry.
