Frontiers in Community Service and Empowerment (FiCSE) publishes peer-reviewed, community services activities articles in an open-access format. Accepted articles span the full extent of the Engineering, Social, Science, Health and Education. FiCSE seeks to be the world’s premier open-access outlet for community services papers. As such, unlike traditional journals, FiCSEdoes not limit content due to page budgets or thematic significance. Rather, FiCSE evaluates the scientific and implementation methods of each article for validity and accepts articles solely on the basis of the research. Likewise, by not restricting papers to a narrow discipline, FiCSE facilitates the discovery of the connections between papers, whether within or between disciplines.

Abstract

Many people with physical disabilities, especially transradial amputees, face difficulties in performing daily activities and have low self-esteem due to the lack of affordable and functional prosthetic hands. The aim of this community service program is to apply 3D printing technology in making prosthetic hands for the members of the Indonesian Physical Disability Association (PPDFI) branch in Surabaya. The method consists of four steps: (1) measuring the physical parameters of the amputees, such as the circumference and length of the residual limb, (2) designing and printing the prosthetic hand using 3D software and printer, (3) testing the mechanical and functional performance of the prosthetic hand, such as the ability to open and close, and (4) providing counseling and mentoring to the amputees to restore their confidence and evaluate their usage. Result: The result of this program is the availability of a low-cost and open-source prosthetic hand for the transradial amputees, which can help them to perform basic activities such as driving, holding a phone, and grabbing a bottle. The prosthetic hand can also be customized according to the needs and preferences of the amputees, such as the color or design. Conclusion: The conclusion of this program is that 3D printing technology can be used to create a functional and affordable prosthetic hand for the transradial amputees, which can improve their quality of life and self-esteem. The program also provides education and guidance to the amputees and the community about the benefits and risks of using prosthetic hands.

Abstract

Sawahan Village, Watulimo Subdistrict, Trenggalek Regency, is renowned as a durian forest tourism area. However, residents living near the river basin often complain about the odor due to the frequent presence of garbage along the river. The methods employed include introducing a chlorine diffuser device, supporting the development of the tourism village, promoting self-sufficiency, providing education on waste management through the Takakura method, and establishing a Waste Bank, healthy settlements, and a Clean and Healthy Behavior (CHB) program through Family Action Plans (FAP). The results of the community service in 2022 showed that the physical and chemical parameters of water in Sawahan Village met the required standards. However, the total coliform microbiological parameter at the source did not meet the standards as it exceeded 65 CFU/100 ml, and the Escherichia coli parameter at the source was 3 CFU/100 ml. Therefore, in the 2023 community service project, an Appropriate Technology (AT) called the chlorine diffuser. Assistance was provided for the operation and maintenance of the Clean Water Facility (CWF) by teaching the use of calcium hypochlorite through a chlorine diffuser. Through educational activities, the highest increase in knowledge among the community was related to waste sorting through the Waste Bank, with 10 individuals (20%) initially understanding waste separation, which then increased to 48 individuals (96%). The greatest improvement in community behavior regarding CHB in the FAP was observed in handwashing facilities, with 18 individuals (36%) having access to proper handwashing facilities far from pollutants, which later increased to 50 individuals (100%).
