Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of the research is to find out the character and theme in the “Aladdin” movie from Walt Disney 2019 by Guy Ritchie. This research is designed as qualitative research. The data are collected by analyzing the data found in the film. The analysis of the film is undertaken on the dialogues. The result of the research is the form of character and theme. 1) The character which emerges in film “Aladdin”, Protagonist is 65%, Antagonist is 29%, and Foil 6%. It means that the protagonist is dominating. 2) Theme that exist in the film, Complexity of Human Relationship gets 35%, Moral implication is 23,333%, Social Problem is 18,333%, Struggle for Human Dignity is 10%, Truth of Human Nature is 5%, Coming of Age/ Loss of Innocence/ Growing Awareness is 5%, Moral or Philosophical Riddle is 3,333%. It means that complexity of human relationship is dominating.Key Words: character; theme; movie; Walt Disney.

Abstract

Abstract: Illocutionary act is an important part in order to understand the speech acts. It is related to the speaker’s intention in the conversation, and it can be seen from the utterances. In contrast, Perlocutionary act is the effect of the utterance which the speaker said to the hearer. This act does not consist of certain things in certain ways, but it is having certain effects. The literary works of concern for this study is The Book of Lost Things novel. The purpose of this paper is to describe the Illocutionary and Perlocutionary acts employed by the characters in the novel. The finding of this study indicates that the characters in The Book of Lost Things employed all types of Illocutionary acts and responding to that using Perlocutionary acts. It can be concluded that the used of Illocutionary and Perlocutionary acts can be found in this novel.Key Words: illocutionary act; perlocutionary act; speech act; the book of lost things.

Abstract

This research aims to get empirical data and analyze the effects of reading interest and vocabulary mastery on students’ writing skills at State Vocational High Schools in Tangerang City, Banten. This research was designed and calculated using quantitative calculation. The research findings indicated: (1) There are significant effects of reading interest and vocabulary mastery towards students’ writing skills. It is proved by Sig is 0,000 < 0,05 and the value of F0 is 47,110. (2) There is a significant effect of reading interest on students’ writing skills. It is proved by the Sig is 0,044 < 0,05 and the value To is 2,078. (3) There is no significant effect of vocabulary mastery on students writing skills. The Sig proves it is 0,142 >0,05, and the value of To is 1,603. Due to the result, it can be inferred that there was a significant effect of students’ reading interest and vocabulary mastery towards students’ writing skills. The students' higher writing skill is influenced by the vast amount of vocabulary mastery and other influential factors such as a high reading interest.

Abstract

The aims at this research are (1) to find out the effect learning motivation and confidence towards English speaking skill of SMPN students at Karawang regency. (2) To find out the effect of learning motivation towards English speaking of SMPN students at Karawang reegency. (3) To find out the effect of students confidence towards English speaking of SMPN students at Karawang reegency. This research is survey on SMPN at Karawang regency, academic year of 2017/2018. The sample consists of 90 students who choosen randomly from several SMPN at Karawang regency. Taking data are carried out by distributing quisioner. Data analysis use descriptive statistic method, validity test, realibility test, multiple regression analysis. The results of this research are (1) There are  simultaneouslu effects  of learning motivation  and confidence towards English speaking of SMPN students at Karawang reegency. It is proven by getting  sig score 0,000<0,05 and Fcount = 64,715. (2) There is a significant effect of learning motivation towards English speaking of SMPN students at Karawang regency. It is proven by getting  sig score 0,000<0,05 and Tcount = 7,256. (3) There is a significant effect of confidence towards English speaking of SMPN students at Karawang regency. Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine (1) the form of significant lexical collocation in student's English writing discussion text, (2) the process of lexical collocation creates cohesion in student's English writing discussion text, and (3) the cultural reflection displayed by the structure of lexical collocation and textual cohesion in student's English writing discussion text. This study applies a mixture of descriptive and quantitative qualitative methods in describing research findings. The data source of this research is the results of writing discussion texts in 3 PKBM Karawang. Data that has been documented in total is 30 discussion texts with 5274 words and 1664 types of words.  The author uses the help of a computer application called Antconc to obtain the collocation data. The findings show that (1) the lexical collocations produced by students in Paket C in the discussion text are L1 (15%), L2 (34%), L3 (18%), L4 (4%), L5 (18%), and L7 (11%); (2) reference data are personal (51%), demonstrative (30%), and comparative (10%); conjunction data are additive (44%), adversative (15%), temporal (5%), and causal (36%). (3) The cultural representation found was the issue raised as the title of the text sourced from daily activities and used the words claim and assumed to describe students' ideas and opinions in the text.  This shows that collocation is able to get a special place in learning English to improve the writing ability of students in Paket C in PKBM.

Abstract

This research aims to achieve empirical data and analyze the effect of vocabulary and grammar mastery towards students’ reading comprehension at state senior high school in South Jakarta. This research used the data analysis technique, and those were descriptive statistics, requirement analysis, normality test, linearity test, and test of hypothesis. The research was carried out at three classes from three state senior high schools in South Jakarta. The sample was 90 students. Data collection is completed by giving 30 questions for the vocabulary test, 30 questions for grammar test, and 30 questions for a reading comprehension test. Due to the result, it can be inferred that there are significant effects of vocabulary and grammar mastery altogether towards students’ reading comprehension.Keywords: vocabulary mastery; reading comprehension; grammar skills, foreign language learning

Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this thesis to analyze the character and moral value in Lethal White novel by J.K Rowling. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative research that aims to describe the character and moral value contained in Lethal White novel by J.K Rowling. The data obtained are then analyzed and clarified based on the protagonist, antagonist, secondary, extras, round and flat character. Likewise with the moral value that is divided into honestly, altruism, diligence, and solidarity. After analyzing the characters and moral values in Lethal White novel by J.K Rowling, the writer found two points from the discussion characters and moral values, 1) there are protagonist is 47%, antagonist 33%, secondary 11%, extras 6%, flat 1%, round 1%. The protagonist character gets the highest percentage. 2) there are 11% honesty, 33% altruism, 33% diligence, and 22% solidarity. Diligence and altruism actually get the same percentage since the author would like to tell the reader that to gains dream, people need to be diligence and in this life, sometimes it is god for being altruism.Key Words: character; moral value; and novel.

Abstract

The purpose of knowing and analyzing the influence of vocabulary mastery and reading interest on the Ability to Understand Narrative Text. The population observed in this research is the students of class VIII (Eight) SMP Negeri in Kecamatan Makasar East Jakarta. The sample numbered 60 respondents from 3 schools. The sample was obtained through a simple random sample, that is the researcher combined respondents in the population so that they would be measured in the same amount. This study has three variables divided into 2 independent variables (vocabulary mastery and reading interest variables) and 1 dependent variable (Understanding Narrative Text Skill variable). Data collection is done through multiple choice tests, questionnaires and written tests for all variables. Data acquisition was then analyzed using multiple correlation and regression techniques. Before performing a regression test, the test of analysis requirements must be achieved first, such as normality test and linearity test. The result of this research is 1) There is a significant influence of vocabulary mastery and reading interest together to the Ability to Understand Narrative Text of Junior High School Students in Kecamatan Makasar in East Jakarta. This is evidenced by the value of Sig. 0,000 <0.05 and F_ count = 29,769; 2) There is a significant influence of vocabulary mastery on the Ability to Understand Narrative Text of Junior High School Students in Kecamatan Makasar in East Jakarta. This is evidenced by the value of Sig. 0.000 <0.05 and thitung = 4.863; 3) There is a significant influence of reading interest on the Ability to Understand Narrative Text of Junior High School Students in Kecamatan Makasar in East Jakarta. This is evidenced by the value of Sig. 0.000 <0.05 and thitung = 4.438; . It shows that the ability to understand Narrative Text is highly controlled or influenced by their vocabulary mastery and reading interest. Abstract

The objectives of the research were formulated to find out the errors of word order and the subject-verb agreement made by the English department students at universities in Indonesia in their undergraduate thesis abstracts. The method of the research was qualitative descriptive. The source of data was 35 undergraduate thesis abstracts from 2017 to 2019 year made by the English department students at universities in Indonesia. Technique of data analysis was through collecting data, identifying of errors, classifying of errors, explaining of errors and evaluating of errors. The classification of the errors is based on Surface Taxonomy category. The research findings reveal that the most common error of word order in the surface taxonomy was omission consisting of 76 or 38% errors. Meanwhile, the most error of subject- verb agreement was omission and misformation with 21 or 48,83%.
