Abstract

ABSTARCT: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of learning motivation and vocabulary mastery together on the ability to write English narrative on private junior high school students in Bogor city, the influence of learning motivation on the ability to write English narrative on private Junior High School students in Bogor city, and the influence of mastery vocabulary on the ability to write English narrative in private Junior High School students in Bogor city. Respondents in this study amounted to 90 students who were randomly selected in several private Junior High Schools in Bogor city. The research method used is a survey method with three variables, namely learning motivation (X1), vocabulary mastery (X2), and English narrative writing ability (Y). The results showed: 1) There was a significant influence of learning motivation and vocabulary mastery together on the ability to write English narrative for private Junior High School students in Bogor city. This is evidenced by the acquisition of Sig. 0,000 <0,05 and fh = 13,905. 2) There is a significant effect of learning motivation on the ability to write English narrative for private Junior High School students in Bogor city. This is evidenced by the acquisition of Sig. 0,000 <0.05 and th = 3,764. 3) There is a significant influence on vocabulary mastery on the ability to write English narrative for private  Junior High School students in the Bogor city. This is evidenced by the acquisition of  Sig. 0.011 <0.05 and th = 2.600. From the results of the research obtained, it can be recommended that learning motivation and good vocabulary mastery are needed to achieve the ability to write narrative in English. Keyword: learning motivation, vocabulary mastery, to write English Narrative   ABSTRAKTujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pengaruh motivasi belajar dan penguasaan kosakata secara bersama-sama terhadap kemampuan menulis naratif bahasa Inggris pada siswa SMP Swasta di Kota Bogor, pengaruh  motivasi belajar terhadap kemmapuan menulis naratif bahasa Inggris pada siswa SMP Swasta di Kota Bogor, dan pengaruh  penguasaan kosakata terhadap kemampuan menulis naratif bahasa Inggris pada siswa SMP Swasta di Kota Bogor. Responden dalam penelitian ini berjumlah 90 orang siswa yang dipilih secara random pada beberapa sekolah SMP Swasta di Kota Bogor. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode survei dengan tiga variabel yaitu Motivasi belajar (X1), Penguasaan kosakata (X2), dan Kemampuan menulis naratif bahasa Inggris (Y). Hasil penelitian menunjukan: 1)Terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan motivasi belajar dan penguasaan kosakata secara bersama-sama terhadap kemampuan menulis naratif bahasa Inggris siswa SMP Swasta di Kota Bogor. Hal ini dibuktikan dengan perolehan nilai Sig. 0,000 < 0,05 dan Fh = 13, 905. 2) Terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan motivasi belajar terhadap kemampuan menulis naratif bahasa Inggris siswa SMP Swasta di Kota Bogor. Abstract

This research is to analyze deixis and speech act on presidential debate between Donald Trump and Joe Biden. The research data is the final presidential debate between Donald Trump and Joe Biden on 20th October 2020. The research is qualitative research. Data are taken from the video downloaded from www. Youtube.com. The video is then transcribed and analyzed. The main research instrument is the researcher himself. Deixis found in this research are person deixis (74,88%), spatial deixis (5,55%), temporal deixis (2,19%), social deixis (13,55%), and discourse deixis (3,84%). The context in which deixis used are person deixis in which deictic expression indicates person reference, as first person, second person and third person. Then spatial deixis is in context that deictic expression indicates proximal place and distal place. Temporal deixis in in context in which deictic expression indicates time point. Social deixis is used in context to indicates the social rank of reference. Meanwhile, discourse deixis is used to refer to portion of unfolding discourse in which utterance is located. Speech acts found in the research are assertive (59,54%), directive (11,45%), commissive (16,79%), and expressive (12,21%). The kind of assertive found are informing, convincing, stating, claiming. The kind of directive consist of requesting, suggesting, and ordering. The kind of commissive consist of threatening and promising. The kind of expressive consist of greeting, apologizing, thanking, and surprising. The possible perlocutionary act found is that assertive, which are informing, convincing, and claiming, is Trump and Biden want to inform some facts related to the issues being discussed. Further they want to convince the voters to vote one of them to be next president of the United States of America. Claiming acts is to show about what Trump and Biden have done for America. Each of them claims that he is the better person for the next president. Commissive also is dominant illocutionary acts, particularly promising acts. This is because they are debating for the president.

Abstract

The explanatory study was aimed ad describing the effects of linguistic intelligence and classroom classroom climate perseption. From the population of all the principals of junior high school in Depok, West Java (600 people), a sample of 106 principals were randomly selected. The data were collected using a questionnaire and then analyzed statistically using SPSS analyses. The result showed that linguistic intelligence and classroom climate’s perception directly influence the student’s English conversation, and that there are indirect effects of linguistic intelligence on student’s English conversation through classroom climate’s perception.

Abstract

The aim of the research is to know the use of simple past tense and adjective verbs ofSMPN in Central Jakarta in writing recount text and to find out what errors the most dominant students made. The research approach used in this study is a qualitative approach. After analyzing the students' writing, the writer gets the conclusion that 1) the most common types of mistakes in simple past tense are misformation at 67.99%. This error reached 189 errors out of a total of 278 errors. Meanwhile, the least type of misuse of is misordering by 3.96%. This error reached 11 errors out of a total of 278 errors. While the other types of errors were error of omission of 12.23% which reached 34 errors out of a total of 278 errors and error of addition of 9.71% which totaled 27 errors out of a total of 278 errors. 2) Errors in adjective writing were 17 errors or 6.11%.Keywords: simple past tense, recount text, EFL, junior high school

Abstract

AbstractThe aims of the research are: to know illocutionary acts, to know the types of illocutionary acts and to know the speaker’s intention in the novel of ‘And the Mountains Echoed’.The technique of collecting data of illocutionary acts are listening to the audio, reading novel ‘And the Mountains Echoed’, making research instrument. The research method that is used descriptive qualitative and technique of data analysis that used in this research is data reduction, such as: sorting, coding, categorizing, classifying, and interpreting the data; making data display such as the table of research instrument and concluding. The researcher analyzed the data from 9 chapters and 446 pages of the novel. The trustworthiness of the data is conducted to measure credibility, transferability, dependability and confirmability. The research findings are: 1). The researcher found the speakers’ utterances contained illocutionary acts in the novel. 2). The utterances in the novel contained five types of illocutionary acts, namely: directive, commissive, assertive, expressive and declarative. 3). The illocutionary acts were used by the speakers to convey their intentions to the addressee, such as: directive is used to ask someone to do something, commissive is used to intend the speaker’s commits, assertive is used to state the speaker’s belief, expressive is used to show speaker’s feeling, and declarative is used to change the condition. These are the speakers’ intention in the novel of ‘And the Mountains Echoed’ written by Khaled Hosseini. Key words : Illocutionary Act, Novel

Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to determine: 1) The effect of preposition and grammar mastery on students writing descriptive text. 2) The Effect of the preposition on students writing descriptive text.  3) The Effect of vocabulary mastery on students writing descriptive text.  The Affordable population is class X of 1 Vocational School Rancaekek, Vocational School Majalayal. The sample of the research is 75 respondents in this study. The method of this current research used surveys. Inference analyses used are random and multiple linear regression. The results of the study show: 1) There is a significant effect of preposition and vocabulary mastery on student writing descriptive text; this is evidenced by the acquisition of Sig. = 0,000 <0,05 and F observe = 9,266; 2) there is a significant effect of the preposition on student writing descriptive text. This is evidenced by the acquisition of Sig. = 0,011<0,05 and T observe = -2,614.3. 3) There is a significant effect of vocabulary mastery on students writing descriptive text; this is evidenced by the acquisition of Sig. 0,003<0,05 and T observe = 3,058.Keywords: preposition, vocabulary mastery, descriptive text

Abstract

The purpose of this research  are (1) to find out the effects of reading interest and vocabulary mastery towards  narrative English  text writing skill of SMP Negeri studets in Karawang district.  (2) to find out the effects of vocabulary mastery towards narrative English text writing skill of SMP Negeri in Karawang district. This research is survey in Karawang district, academic year 2017/2018.  The number of sample is 80 students who are taken randomly by many SMP Negeri schools  in Karawang district.  Taking data of this research is questioner. Data analysis by using descriptive statistic method, validity test, reliability test, multiple regression analysis. The results of this research are (1) there is significant effect of reading interest and vocabulary mastery together towards narrative English text writing skill of SMP Negeri Students in Karawang district. It is proven by getting score  sig.0,000 < 0,05 and fcount =67,749. (2) there is significant effect reading habit  towards  narrative English text writing skill of SMP Negeri Students in Karawang district. It is proven by getting score  sig.0,000 < 0,05 and fcount =7,222. (3). There is significant effect of vocabulary mastery towards  narrative English text writing skill of SMP Negeri Students in Karawang district. Abstract

The objective of this study is aimed to (1) know the use of positive politeness and negative politeness use by main character in Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen and (2) identify the function of the strategies. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method to describe the positive politeness and negative politeness used by main character in the novel. The instrument of this study is the writer herself by reading the novel and coding the intended data related to positive politeness and negative politeness. The result of this study shows that there are 12 positive politeness strategies and 5 negative politeness strategies used by Elizabeth Bennet, the main character in the novel. The positive politeness strategies used are St-1, St-2, St-3, St-4, St-5, St-6, St-8, St-11, St-12, St-13, St-14, and St-15. The negative strategies used are St-1, St-2, St-4, St5, and St-6. The function of positive politeness is to minimize face threatening act show speaker awareness of hearer’s needs while the function of negative politeness is to minimize burden and reduce imposition to hearer.

Abstract

Abstract: This research aims to know the effect of students’ perception of learning media and vocabulary mastery toward students’ listening comprehension skills. The result of the research shows that; 1). There are significant effects of students’ perception on the use of learning media and vocabulary mastery toward students’ listening comprehension skills at the Private Colleges in Jakarta.  The significant effect was proved by the score of Sig. = 0,000< 0,05 andF0= 47.238. Both variables, the students’ perception on the use of learning media and vocabulary mastery, had a contribution of 62.4 % to the students’ listening comprehension. 2). Abstract

The aim of the research is to find out the use of figurative languages, thedominant one, and the moral values in the selected poems of William Shakespeare. Thisresearch uses a qualitative descriptive method. The results obtained include: there are 14 kinds of figurative language used in the selected poems, they are metaphor, simile, symbol, personification, litotes, hyperbole, metonymy, synecdoche, allusion, alliteration,repetition, assonance, parallelism, and paradox. The dominant of figurative language used in the selected poems is a metaphor. There are five moral values, such as appreciation, joy, love, honesty, and loyalty.Keywords: literature; figurative language; moral value; poetry
