Abstract

This study aims to analyze and verify the hypothesis about the influence of students’ perception of learning media and student’s motivation toward student’s English achievement. The hypothesis of the research is 1). There is a significant influence between students’ perceptions and student’s motivation at the same time toward the student’s English achievement. 2). There is a significant influence on students’ perceptions toward student’s English achievement. 3). There is a significant influence of student’s motivation toward student’s English achievement. In this research, researchers used research Analyses regression survey method. The population is from students of Muhammadiyah 2 high school in Tangerang, IT As Syukriyah, and Yuppentek 1 high schools in Tangerang in the 2018/2019 academic year, which completed with 661 students. The sample size of 60 students was chosen randomly from all existing classes with Proportionate Stratified random sampling. The instrument used was a questionnaire. Hypothesis testing results are summarized as follows: (1) There is a significant influence between the student’s perception and student’s motivation on learning media toward student’s English achievement. The result of this research can be implied to improve the quality of English teaching and learning.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze how the plot of the story represents an identity crisis issue and the character’s action in dealing with his problems to manage his identity crisis. The reality and fantasy of the main character portrays the character’s identity crisis influencing his personality. The study employed qualitative method with the descriptive analysis. In identifying the data, Erikson’s theory about identity crisis and the interpretation of dreams by Sigmund Freud are used to find out the main character’s Id and how he manages his Id. The results of this study show the main character’s Id in The Jungle Book can be seen through the reflection of his anxiety through Freud theory. His anxiety and identity crisis have a significant role in Mowgli’s thoughts and behaviors: he cannot define himself in one’s identity. It comes to the conclusion that he is not a man, but neither a wolf.

Abstract

Abstrak. This research is aimed at analyzing the Character and Setting in the Novel “About You” by Tere Liye. The method used in this research is content analysis which is to describe the Character and Setting in the novel. Data are obtained, analyzed and described based on the sentences in the novel; The Character divided into 2 types they are personal character and the attitude of personal. Setting shows the highest percentage 130 or 86%, while Character shows 22 or 14%. Character shows the highest percentage is caused by the complex sentences mostly describe someone or things in mostly sentences in the novel. Meanwhile, character in time shows 154 or 63%, setting 46 or 19%, reason 35 or 14%, condition 6 or 2%, and concession 4 2%. Antagonist and protagonist in time shows the highest percentage caused by most sentences tell about the time in almost every page. The highest percentage for the character is protagonist. Because Sri is the central for all of everything and she is a woman who has many things that should be kept. She has to keep all of assets that he has. The highest percentage in this setting is respect. Why? Because Sri and Zaman Zulkarnain are main character by every place and they are very humble for all of people around of them.Key words : Character and setting in the novel. protagonist, antagonist, flat.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of reading habit and grammar mastery towards the Students descriptive writing, then do research using the survey method. The sample used 90 students with cluster random sampling technique. The results showed that there is a significant influence reading habits and mastery of grammar together on the ability to write descriptive texts English. This is evidenced by the acquisition of the Sig. 0.000 <0.05 and Fh = 18.414. Together. 2) There is a significant effect on the ability of the habit of reading English writing descriptive texts. This is evidenced by the acquisition of the Sig 0,002, <0.05 and th =3,235. 3). Also, there is a significant effect on the ability of mastering grammar writing descriptive texts English. This is evidenced by the acquisition Sig.0,005 value <0.05 and th =2902Keywords: reading habits; grammar mastery; foreign language writing; descriptive text.

Abstract

Code mixing and switching in film “Critical Eleven” by Monty Tiwa and Robert Ronny. The objectives of this research are to know the types and the motives of code switching and mixing in the film Critical Eleven. Besides, this research is aimed to know the interferences in the utterances. The theories in this research are proposed by Muysken (2004). This research used descriptive qualitative method. The data of this research was taken from the film transcript. The data is divided into code mixing and code switching. Then, it is analyzed to find the possible reasons of using code mixing and switching. The results of this research are: (1) The most frequent type of code switching was intra-sentential switching that occurred 30 utterances (61,22%). Meanwhile, the most frequent types of code mixing were insertion and alternation. Both types occurred 10 times (47,62%). (2) The most frequent reason of code switching was talking about particular topic (14 data or 28,57%), meanwhile the prestige feeling motive was the most frequent reason of code mixing (18 data or 85,71%). (3) There was an interference in the utterances that is caused by code mixing, but the interference did not occur due to code switching. It happened because the speakers were proficient in Indonesian and English.

Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to determine: The effect of vocabulary and grammar mastery on the English recount text writing skills of state junior high. The results of the hypothesis obtained the following conclusions: (1) There is a significant influence in mastering the vocabulary and grammar together on the ability to write English recount text in junior high school. This is shown from the value of Sig 0.010 <0.05 and Fh = 4.972. (2) There is a significant influence of vocabulary mastery on writing English recount text of state junior high school. This is shown from the value of Sig 0.033 <0.05 and th = 2192. (3) There is a significant influence of grammar mastery on writing English recount text of state junior high school. This is shown from the value of Sig 0.039 <0.05 and th = 2.111.Keywords: vocabulary, grammar, recount text

Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is any influence of vocabulary mastery and students’ learning interest in learning on English speaking skills of State Junior High School students in Bogor City - West Java. This research was conducted in several state junior high schools in the city of Bogor, including SMP Negeri 1 Bogor, SMP Negeri 2 Bogor, and SMP Negeri 5 Bogor. The population in this study were all students of class VII at State Junior High Schools in the City of Bogor - West Java. The research results obtained that EFL speaking skills required good vocabulary mastery and high learning interest. Samples were taken by simple random technique. Research data on Speaking Skills was carried out with the technique of giving oral tests on speaking assignments. Data about vocabulary mastery is done by giving written test technique, while data about learning interest is collected using questionnaire-shaped instruments. Data analysis was performed by multiple linear regression analysis. Based on the results of the hypothesis and data analysis, the following conclusions are made: 1) There is a significant influence in the mastery of English vocabulary and interest in learning together on English speaking skills of state junior high school students in Bogor, West Java Province. This is evidenced by the acquisition of Sig. 0,000 <0.05 and Fh = 13,058. 2) There is a significant influence of vocabulary mastery on English speaking skills of State Junior High School students in the city of Bogor, West Java Province. This is evidenced by the acquisition of Sig. 0.007 <0.05 and th = 2.777. 3) There is a significant influence of learning interest on English speaking skills of State Junior High School students in the city of Bogor, West Java Province. This is evidenced by the acquisition of Sig. 0.001 <0.05 and th = 3.493.Keywords: vocabulary mastery; speaking skill; foreign language; learning interest

Abstract

The aim of the research is 1) to analyze and clarify types of presupposition found in the Novel Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. 2) to analyze derivational affixes found in Novel Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. The research method is descriptive qualitative. The data of this research is gained from the novel which found 40 data of presupposition and 50 data of derivational affix. Analysis is fulfilled with each of the utterance is divided and distributed into six kind of presupposition, and every word/base that contain derivational affix is divided and distribute to nine affixation process explained by tree diagram. The result of the research is the Existential Presupposition is the first mostused with amount 11 data out of 40 data. Existential Presupposition has 27,5% in dialogue. Verb to Noun is the most dominant derivational affix process with total 12 data out of 50 data getting 24% portion.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the adjective and adverbial clauses in “The Secret Garden” by Frances Hodgson Burnett. The method used in this research is a content analysis which is to describes the adjective clause and adverbial clause in the novel. Data are obtained, analyzed, and described based on the sentences in the novel. The relative pronoun's adjective shows the highest percentage of 130 or 86%, while relative adverbs show 22 or 14%. The adjective clause in relative pronouns shows the highest percentage caused by the complex sentences, mostly describing someone or things in most sentences in the novel. Meanwhile, adjective clause in time shows 154 or 63%, manner 46 or 19%, reason 35 or 14%, condition 6 or 2%, and concession 4 2%. Adverbial clause in time shows the highest percentage caused by most sentences tell about the time in almost every page.

Abstract

Abstrak. Tujuan dari penelitian adalah untuk mengetahui: 1) pengaruh persepsi atas gaya belajar dan perhatian orang tua secara bersama-sama terhadap prestasi belajar bahasa Inggris siswa kelas XI SMK Negeri di Jakarta Pusat; 2) pengaruh persepsi atas gaya belajar terhadap prestasi  belajar bahasa Inggris  siswa kelas XI  SMK Negeri di Jakarta Pusat; 3) pengaruh perhatian orang tua terhadap prestasi  belajar bahasa Inggris siswa kelas XI SMK  Negeri di Jakarta Pusat. Metode penelitian ini adalah survei dengan teknik analisis korelasi. Populasi penelitian ini adalah seluruh siswa kelas XI SMK Negeri 1, SMK Negeri 34, dan SMK Negeri 39 di Jakarta Pusat, semester Genap tahun pelajaran 2017-2018 berjumlah 667 siswa. Sampel penelitian ini adalah 100 siswa. Hasil penelitian menyimpulkan: 1) Terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan persepsi atas gaya belajar dan perhatian orang tua secara bersama-sama terhadap prestasi belajar bahasa Inggris siswa SMKN di Jakarta Pusat. Hal ini dibuktikan dengan perolehan nilai Sig. = 0,001 < 0,05 dan Fhitung = 7,047. 2) Terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan persepsi atas gaya belajar terhadap prestasi belajar bahasa Inggris siswa  SMKN di Jakarta Pusat. Hal ini dibuktikan dengan nilai  Sig. = 0,049 < 0,05 dan thitung = 1,993. 3) Terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan perhatian orang tua terhadap prestasi belajar bahasa Inggris siswa SMKN di Jakarta Pusat. Hal ini dibuktikan dengan, nilai Sig. = 0,000 < 0,05 dan thitung = 3,739.Kata Kunci: Persepsi siswa, gaya belajar, perhatian orang tua, prestasi belajar.
