Abstract

Abstract

In this research paper, the representation of gender performativity in Hurricane Bianca (2016) film will be analyzed from the point of view of how drag helps construct and resist identities in an institutional context dominated by heteronormativity. Through qualitative textual and visual analysis, Judith Butler’s concepts of gender performativity, citationality and iterability will be applied to examine how drag serves as both an arena for constructing gendered identities and a form of resistance to the institutional power of heteronormativity. Findings indicate that the gender identity of the drag queen Bianca Del Rio is neither essential nor fixed since it is created through multiple performative acts such as dressing, speaking, gesturing and naming oneself that cannot be explained by means of an essentialist concept of gender. Her resistance is performed through citationality, professionalism and taking up spaces in an institution, which allows her to deconstruct the heteronormative power that had previously excluded her and create a new definition of her position in the school's organizational structure. The current research paper reveals that Hurricane Bianca operates as a cultural text that uses drag as a political resistance act while pointing out the fragility of heteronormative conventions and their dependency on constant repetition

Abstract

This qualitative study aims to find types of idioms as well as describe the techniques used in the subtitle translation of the Joker movie (2019) and their equivalence. The data of this study were analyzed in three steps. First is identifying the type of idiom contained in each data. Second is analyzing what translation techniques are used by the translator. Third is analyzing the equivalence of the translation by comparing the source text and the target text. In the analysis of the data, the researcher used the theory by O'Dell and McCarthy (2017) to classify the idioms, the theory by Molina and Albir (2002) to identify the translation techniques, and the theory by Newmark (1981), as well as Nida and Taber (1974), to determine the equivalence. There are 20 data collected by the researcher. For the types of idioms, there are 17 data representing Fixed Statements, 2 data being Proverbs, and 1 data being Cliche Idiom. Of all the data found, 3 data are using the Reduction technique, 1 data using the Discursive Creation technique, 6 data using the Established Equivalent technique, 3 data using the Linguistic Compression technique, 2 data using the Modulation technique, 2 data using the Transposition technique, 1 data using the Adaptation technique, and 2 data using the Literal Translation technique. As for the translation equivalence, from a total of 20 data, there are 3 unnatural data, and the rest, which means 17 data, have natural translation results.

Abstract

Abstract Translating humor, particularly dark humor, poses considerable challenges in audiovisual translation because its comic effect depends on cultural references, pragmatic meaning, and audience tolerance for taboo subjects. While prior research has largely focused on classifying translation techniques, comparatively little attention has been paid to whether these techniques actually preserve humorous effect. This study examines how English dark jokes are translated into Indonesian subtitles in the animated series Rick and Morty, focusing on the strategies used and the extent to which they maintain the original humorous effect. Using a qualitative descriptive design, five purposively selected dark-joke instances from five episodes on the official Prime Video platform were analyzed through Chiaro's (2006) framework of humor translation techniques and Nida's (1964) concept of dynamic equivalence. The findings show that literal translation, adaptation, modulation, and omission are the main strategies employed by the translator. Adaptation and modulation prove most effective when cultural or pragmatic differences prevent literal rendering, whereas omission tends to weaken comic impact despite retaining propositional meaning. Four of the five translations achieved full or near-full dynamic equivalence. These results suggest that preserving dark humor requires prioritizing pragmatic and emotional equivalence over lexical correspondence, offering practical implications for translators working with culturally sensitive comedic content. Abstract

Song translation in animated films is a complex process because it requires balancing meaning, musicality, and cultural adaptation to ensure that the lyrics remain understandable, singable, and acceptable to the target audience. This study aims to analyze the official Indonesian translations of the songs Let It Go and Show Yourself from Frozen and Frozen II by examining the translation strategies, communicative purposes, translation ideology, and audience responses to the translated lyrics. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach through a comparative analysis of the original English lyrics and their official Indonesian versions. The analysis was supported by questionnaire data collected from 50 respondents and Spotify streaming data as an indicator of audience reception. The findings reveal that the Indonesian translations successfully maintain musical quality through linguistic naturalness, rhythm, rhyme, and singability, although several instances of semantic reduction were employed to accommodate musical constraints. Furthermore, the results indicate that domestication is the dominant translation ideology, as the translators prioritized cultural familiarity, linguistic naturalness, and ease of comprehension for Indonesian audiences over preserving source-language features. Audience responses also demonstrate positive perceptions regarding meaning clarity, cultural appropriateness, and the overall quality of the translations. This study concludes that the success of song translation is determined not only by semantic equivalence but also by the translator’s ability to balance linguistic, musical, communicative, and cultural aspects, enabling the translated songs to convey their emotional impact while remaining accessible and acceptable to Indonesian audiences.
