Abstract

Abstract The exploitation of nature and its impact on animal extinction is a common occurrence due to excessive modernization. However, this issue is sometimes overlooked by the mainstream media and public discourse. In this case, literature often emerges to document or even voice criticism of the phenomenon of environmental destruction. Several works that voice criticism of the phenomenon of ecosystem destruction and animal extinction due to modern culture are the short stories of Seno Gumira Ajidarma (SGA). In this study, the author takes three SGA short stories entitled “Macan” (Tiger), “Cintaku Jauh di Pulau Komodo” (My Love is Far Away on Komodo Island), and “Badak Kencana” (Golden Rhinoceros). This study will be conducted using an ecocriticism approach, focusing on the examination of totems as key symbols in the three short stories. To dissect the meaning of totems, the concepts of totems, archetypes, and other concepts in Carl Gustav Jung's analytical psychology are also used. The findings of this study are that totems and their symbolism are narratives in short stories that voice criticism of the exploitation of nature and excessive hunting, which destroy the balance and culture of environmental preservation in the settings of the three short stories.

Abstract

Abstract

In the globalization era, the qualified education requires literacy mastery, intercultural competence, and foreign language skills as essential 21st‑century competencies. However, the persistence of low reading competence and limited intercultural awareness remains a significant challenge in both Indonesia and Japan. In response to those challenges, this research aims to develop a multilingual digital storybook based on multimodality as a learning medium to enhance intercultural competence through the Indonesian and Japanese folktales. The study employs a creative-based research methodology approach through the ADDIE development model, which consists of the stages of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The resulting product is an interactive digital e-book entitled Indonesia–Japan Folktales: Timun Mas & Momotaro, presented in three languages, Indonesian, English, and Japanese, combining textual content, visual illustrations, and audio narration. The experiment of the product was conducted with Japanese students from Kanda University of International Studies (KUIS) enrolled in an intermediate-level Indonesian language course, involving such activities as interactive reading, discussion, reflection, and questionnaires. The findings indicate that the multimodal digital storybook effectively fosters student engagement, promotes reading motivation, and strengthens cross‑cultural understanding. Such effectiveness is reinforced by the integration of visual and audio elements that alleviate linguistic cognitive load, while the cross‑cultural narrative content fosters reflection and critical cultural awareness. Consequently, the multilingual and multimodal digital storybook serves as an effective medium for intercultural learning and contributes to the advancement of cultural literacy and the orientation of global education in the digital age.

Abstract

This abstract explores the evolution of literary theories from Structuralism to Deconstruction and their significance. The introduction highpoints the paradigm shifts over the past century, beginning with Formalism, which emphasizes formal essentials of texts. Subsequently, Structuralism emerged by focusing on language systems, universal patterns, and binary oppositions that organize meaning across cultures. The development continued with Deconstruction, which challenges the notion of fixed meaning by emphasizing language’s inherent instability, ambiguity, and the endless deferment of meaning. The research employs comparative literature analysis to examine these theories’ core concepts differences, and interconnections. Findings show that despite their contrasting approaches, both theories deepen our understanding of how meaning is constructed and interpreted in texts. The analysis emphasizes that these theories remain highly relevant today especially in addressing complex societal issues related to gender identity, digital culture, ecological interconnectedness, and globalization. The conclusion emphasizes that the ongoing evolution from Structuralism to Deconstruction offers vital insights for contemporary literary and cultural analysis, developing more nuanced and flexible interpretative methods that reflect the complexities of modern society.

Abstract

Translation presents various challenges, particularly in capturing the nuances of linguistic and morphological structures between languages, as translators must ensure that meaning, style, and cultural context are preserved while avoiding grammatical errors and inappropriate lexical choices. This study aims to identify and describe the Indonesian translations of English prefix “re-” words and analyze the morphological forms that express repetition or return. The significance of the study lies in bridging linguistic gaps, enhancing translation quality, and providing valuable resources for students, scholars, and general readers. Methodologically, this research employs a qualitative descriptive approach, using bilingual online news articles as the data source. The data were then analyzed using thematic analysis to examine both the equivalence and the similarities and differences in morphological forms between English “re-” words and their Indonesian translations. Keywords: morphological translation, linguistic equivalence, thematic analysis, qualitative descriptive research, bilingual corpus

Abstract

This study tries to examine how culinary authenticity of Batak Toba cuisine is represented in English language Instagram captions from a corpus assisted discourse perspective. By applying the multidimensional authenticity frameworks proposed by Johnston and Baumann (2010) and Freedman and Jurafsky (2011), alongside collocation and concordance analysis informed by Hunston (2002) and Baker (2006), the research aims to identify and analyse how lexical patterns construct various dimensions of authenticity such as sensory, procedural, historical, and locality aspects. This descriptive qualitative research employs a corpus assisted method, using Sketch Engine to collect and analyse 53 captions drawn from two Batak Toba culinary Instagram accounts. The findings reveal that the prominent collocational patterns produce six authenticity dimensions namely sensory, procedural, material, historical, locality, and social functioning to frame Batak cuisine as culturally rooted, traditionally sustained, and socially meaningful. Through Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis, the study further shows that these lexical constructions undergo recontextualization which transforms everyday culinary elements into symbolic markers of heritage and identity. Ultimately, the results demonstrate how digital food discourse linguistically shapes and perpetuates Batak Toba cultural values in contemporary online spaces.

Abstract

This paper aims to expand on the reading of suicide in Marianne Katoppo’s Raumanen (1977). Building from a long-established trope of female suicide in tragic fiction, the martyrdom was usually read as a form of loss or madness. However, using the synthesis of Elaine Showalter’s Gynocriticism and Hélène Cixous’ concept of écriture féminine to understand how women own their bodies through writing. I want to argue that by narrating her own life in the novel, Raumanen, the narrator, reclaims her own body and voice. Consequently, this reading will provoke a critical reading of how suicide in fiction, especially conducted by women.

Abstract

This research examines the categories and precision of transitional devices utilized by first-semester English Literature students at Universitas Kristen Indonesia in their argumentative compositions. Informed by the theoretical perspectives of Oshima and Hogue (2006), Halliday and Hasan (1976), and Hyland (2007), the study employs a descriptive qualitative methodology to scrutinize 28 students’ essays. The results indicate a primary dependence on additive and contrastive transitions, coupled with infrequent application of causal and temporal connectors. Although students exhibit a rudimentary grasp of fundamental linkers such as “and,” “also,” and “however,” their vocabulary diversity and grammatical accuracy are notably restricted. Instances of inaccuracy encompass superfluous repetition, colloquial expressions, and sparse incorporation of sophisticated transitional phrases. ("Additive transitions accounted for 75 tokens of all markers used, while temporal transitions were the least frequent at 4 tokens.") These tendencies mirror developmental phases in second language acquisition and highlight the necessity for genre-specific instructional strategies. The research informs curriculum enhancement in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) and outcome-based education (OBE) principles, stressing the significance of cohesive elements in cultivating academic writing competence.
