Abstract

In the film Damsel (2024), directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, the traditional damsel in distress narrative is subverted by the character of Princess Elodie, who transforms from a passive pawn to an empowered individual. The film critiques societal structures that objectify women by exploring Elodie’s journey from being a tool in an arranged marriage and a sacrificial victim to confronting a dragon. This study aims to explore how the film portrays the instrumentalization of Elodie through qualitative descriptive methods, grounded in Nussbaum's theory of objectification, particularly the concept of instrumentality. As the result, the study identifies three forms of Elodie's instrumentalization: subjected to an arranged marriage, subjected to a life sacrifice, and subjected to a target for revenge. From these three forms of Elodie's instrumentalization, this film shows Elodie's gradual assertion of autonomy and rejection of the roles assigned to her, deconstructing conventional girl tropes and highlighting the broader implications of challenging patriarchal norms. The finding of the instrumentalization of Elodie in the film Damsel is shown to become more complex along with the resistance carried out to oppose the prevailing patriarchal norms.

Abstract

Abstract This article elaborates on the concept of doxa as portrayed in the texts Geguritan Jayaprana and Sinrilik I Datu Museng, originating from revered royal settings and carrying significant cultural weight. Geguritan is presented in poetic form, and recited through singing, while Sinrilik is conveyed through singing or declamation with traditional musical accompaniment. Despite their distinct cultural origins in Bali and Makassar, both texts exemplify doxa as an accepted truth that transcends debate. It is important to note the disparities in the discourse surrounding the concept of doxa within both texts. In Geguritan Jayaprana, the concept of doxa highlights the discourse of orthodoxy, emphasizing Jayaprana's adherence to the king's command and Ni Layonsari's pati wrata (suicide) as an expression of spousal loyalty. Conversely, in Sinrilik I Datu Museng, the concept of doxa is rooted in the discourse of heterodoxy, depicting resistance against the prevailing values of the dominant colonizers. The cultural practice of siri', aimed at defending one's honor, is an obligatory facet of Bugis and Makassar traditions, akin to the puputan spirit in Bali. Abstract

Abstract This study presents a pragmatic analysis of the politeness strategies employed in directive speech acts during the Papua New Guinea National Parliament sitting session on May 30th, 2024. Utilizing Brown and Levinson's politeness theory as the analytical framework, the research examines how members of parliament navigate face-threatening acts through linguistic strategies to maintain social harmony and achieve political goals. Data for the study were collected from the official parliamentary transcripts, focusing on instances of directives such as requests, commands, and suggestions. The analysis reveals a predominance of negative politeness strategies, reflecting a high sensitivity to hierarchical structures and the desire to mitigate imposition. Additionally, the study identifies contextual factors, such as the socio-political environment and cultural norms, influencing the choice of politeness strategies. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the intersection between language, power, and culture in parliamentary discourse, offering insights into the pragmatic dynamics of political communication in Papua New Guinea. This research underscores the importance of context in the pragmatic realization of politeness and highlights the role of language in shaping political interactions within legislative settings. Abstract

Metodologi disusun untuk mencapai tujuan.1. Jika tujuannya adalah memperoleh pembuktian tentang keberhasilan atau kegagalansebuah rancangan, maka kita perlu langkah hipotesis-deduktif. Hipotesis dibuktikan dalamuji coba di lapangan. Metodenya empiris-analitis. Sifatnya adalah teknis.2. Jika tujuannya untuk memperoleh kebijaksanaan akal budi dala kerangka intersubjektif, maka kita perlu langkah historis-hermeneutis. Mengetahui latar belalkang dan menafsirkannya.Metodenya penafsiran.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This study used Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic theory to analyze the influence of music genre on the fashion expression of English Literature students at the University of North Sumatra. This research used a descriptive qualitative method. Data was obtained through structured interviews with three informants who have preferences in punk, alternative rock, and K-pop music genres. The results show that each music genre influences different fashion elements regarding colors, accessories, and clothing styles. The punk genre reflects the values of freedom and resistance through dark colors and distinctive accessories, alternative rock highlights self-expression through edgy fashion elements, while K-pop carries modernity and femininity with pastel colors and styles inspired by Korean popular culture. The environment of USU's Faculty of Humanities also plays a vital role in supporting the diversity of student fashion expressions to interact with music subcultures and social identities. Thus, fashion is not only a visual representation of musical preferences but also functions as a sign system that communicates the identity, values, and affiliations of the student community on campus.

Abstract

The rapid advancement of computers and the internet has led to the emergence of internet language as a prominent linguistic phenomenon. Exploring the distinctive features of this language has become an important area of study in recent years. This research analyzes the typical features of internet language used by men and women commenters on Instagram, with a particular emphasis on gender-based differences. The study investigates ten common digital language features: multiple punctuation marks, unconventional spelling, capitalization, asterisks for emphasis, written-out laughter, music/noise references, action descriptions, emoticons, abbreviations, and rebus writing. These features serve as the basis for data analysis. A qualitative approach is used to examine the collected data in-depth. The findings reveal that while both genders use capital letters (though not in all caps) and multiple punctuation marks (such as exclamation points and periods), women employ more internet language features overall—42 features compared to 31 by men. Additionally, woman users are more likely to extend consonants in their spelling, whereas men tend to repeat vowels. These differences illustrate how users modify language for efficiency and self-expression in digital communication.
