Abstract

This study aimed at knowing what moral virtues are in Nancy’s character and the influence of moral virtues to the main character in Oliver Twist. This study also employed virtue ethics theory with qualitative descriptive design. Source of data were taken from the novel of Charles Dickens, Oliver Twist. The methods of collecting data were by reading, identifying, and writing dialogs relating to the problems of the study. This analysis reveals that Nancy is a good person because she has a moral nature. The criminal environment cannot affect one's disposition. Nancy can maintain her character with her moral virtues that are full of kindness, courage, honesty, and loyalty. With those virtues, Nancy can live righteously and can make decisions in deciding what is good for her and for Oliver's life. Oliver can be free from criminals and get his happiness.

Abstract

Analyzing mood disorder in Henry Hobson’s film Maggie was actually chosen by the writer since there was less attention and misconception in our broad society. What people know about this psychology problem is very limited. People assumed that it is very common and it is not quite important to take a deep understanding in this problem. Furthermore, this study aimed at finding out the types of mood disorder by recognizing every symptoms of the disorder found in Maggie film. The method of the study was descriptive qualitative that explored about the types of mood disorder itself and recognized each type according to the symptoms shown by one of the characters in the film by using two steps. The first was watching the film closely, and the second was finding out all the quotations in some dialogues belonging to the problem. Through the data presented in findings and discussion section, the mood disorder as well as is experienced by Maggie as the main character in the film. There are two general types of mood disorder suffered by Maggie. They are depressive disorder and bipolar disorder in which they were also included some types such as major depressive disorder, chronic depressive disorder, and bipolar disorder I

Abstract

This study aimed at finding the types and functions of euphemistic expressions in Bajawa language that are found in the social context. In this study, the writer determines the types of euphemisms in Bajawa language that are found in the social context based on theory proposed by Nichol (2011), namely: abstraction, indirect, litotes, mispronunciation, modification, personification, and slang. And the writer describes the functions of euphemisms in Bajawa language that are found in the social context based on the theory proposed by Burridge (2012, 67-71), namely: protective, underhand, uplifting, provocative, cohesive, and ludic. The subjects in this study were members of the Rakalaba village community as Bajawa language speaker and the object of this study was the expressions of euphemistic in the form of sentences, phrases, and words used in everyday life. The data in this study using interviews, observation, and document study methods. Qualitative descriptive methods are used to provide a comprehensive description and find the types and functions of euphemistic expression. Then, the data is analyzed by grouping data on euphemisms in Bajawa language which are found into seven types of euphemisms and describing the functions of euphemisms into six functions of euphemisms. The results of this study indicate that among the seven types of euphemisms proposed by Nichol (2011), only three types of euphemisms in Bajawa language were found in the social context, namely: (1) abstraction, (2) indirection, and (3) slang. And the writer also found that among the six euphemistic functions proposed by Burridge (2012, 67-71), only five euphemistic functions were used in Bajawa language, namely: (1) protective, (2) underhand, (3) uplifting, (4) provocative, and (5) cohesive.

Abstract

The current study aimed at finding out the types of speech style in Joko Widodo’s speech using the theory of Martin Joos, (1967). The study was a qualitative descriptive method. The data taken were Joko Widodo’s speeches in two different events, mainly at MPR Annual Meeting and IMF annual meeting. Due to fact that the speeches were in form of utterances gained from two videos and its scripts as referential source of data, this study referred to a research by documentation technique. This technique was administered to gather all speech events gained by reading the scripts to find out Joko Widodo’s speech style. The results of this study indicate that there are five types of speech style found in Joko Widodo’s speeches, namely frozen style, consultative style, casual style, and intimate style. In two different speeches, Joko Wido do tends to mostly use frozen style in his speech here by Joko Widodo speech in very formal situation in his speeches than other types of speech style.

Abstract

This study aimed at determining the types of speech disfluency and the most dominant of speech disfluency as seen in Autoro Gavino’s movie Before All Others. The method used in this study was a qualitative method to determine the types of speech disfluency and the quantitative method was used to count the most frequent types found in Before All Others movie. The data in this study was taken from the Before All Others movie and the data form of utterances. The result show that there were 64 utterances showed eight types of speech disfluency in Before All Others. Those types were silent pause (13), filled pause (7), repetition (27), interjection (10), un-retraced false start (1), retraced false start (1), correction (1), and stutter (4). Meanwhile, the most frequent type of speech disfluency that appeared in Before All Others is repetition with a percentage 42.75%.

Abstract

Sentence patterns and sentence types are an inseparable unit where each type of sentence contains several sentence patterns. In general, some researchers analyzed sentence patterns in a short story, speech text, news text and others. But in this study will analyze sentence patterns and sentence types in two song lyrics by Calum Scott. Usually in a song lyrics consists of phrases, clauses, and sentences, but the study will analyze how many sentences are there. This study aims to find sentence patterns and sentence types in the two song lyrics. This study uses a qualitative method. The results of the study show that there are six sentence patterns and six types of sentences found in the two songs. No Matter What's first song with details as follows; pattern I (S+VT+DO), pattern II (S+int.V), pattern, pattern IV (S+intr.V+SP), pattern V (S+com.V+DO+OP), and pattern IV (S+pre.V+PC). The second song is Dancing on My Own with the following details; pattern I (S+VT+DO), pattern II (S+int.V), pattern III (S+dist.V+DO+IO), pattern IV (S+intr.V+SP), pattern V (S+com.V+DO+OP), and pattern VI (S+pre.V+PC). While the types of sentences from the two songs, No Matter What and Dancing on My Own there are four types. They are simple sentence, compound sentence, complex sentence, and compound complex sentence.

Abstract

In this study, the writer analyzed the plot comparison in two literary works, namely the novel and the film Little Women. The purpose of this study is to found out the differences, similarities and parallels between the two literary works. The method used by the writer in this study is qualitative research. This study used the first theory from Drs. Meiliana Sylvie explained about comparative literature. Secondly, the writer used Shiquan Cao's theory that explained about the parallel. This study was conducted to found out the similarities, differences and parallel plots in the two literary works. The study focused on the plot in the story.The results of this study show that between the novel and the film Little Women have similarities and differences, namely exposition / equilibrum, rising action / distrubtion, climax / recognition, falling action / repair and resolution / equilibrum again, and also parallel, namely, parallel in differences, narrative and character. This study will identify important elements in the plot present in both works, and compare how the plot is presented and interpreted in the form of novels and films. This undergraduate thesis thus provides a more in-depth look at the way the two media convey the same story in different ways.

Abstract

People with sadistic personalities or mental disorders can be seen from their attitude and behavior. The sadistic nature depicted in a person's life is his bad behavior. The descriptive method of analysis was carried out by describing the sadistic personality disorder played by Patrick Bateman in the American psycho film, namely the characters and the causes of sadistic personality disorder that are described by the main character. The author uses a qualitative descriptive method, to describe a person's behavior and actions as data in analyzing the problem formulation. This study aims to find the sadistic personality disorder described by Patrick Bateman including the characters and triggering factors in the American Psycho film. Data is taken in the form of phrases, sentences and paragraphs. The approach used by the author is a psychological approach that is concerned with sadistic personality disorder. The research results show that there are three types of characters, namely the mad scientists, the schemer of court, and the trickster.
