Abstract

This study aimed at describing Othello’s deterioration in William Shakespeare’s The Moor of Venice through the intrinsic aspects of the drama. This study adopted structuralism approach and the theory of wholeness to answer the problem issued. This study used descriptive qualitative design that the data were taken from William Shakespeare the Tragedy of Othello the Moor of Venice edited by Alvin Kernan (1963). The results denote that Othello has flaws which lead to his deterioration. Gullible and excessive in loving his wife are the flaws that produce jealousy. Finally, without knowing the fact, Othello kills his wife, and he also kills himself after realizing the truth. The flaws of Othello are identified through plot, character, thought/theme, diction, rhythm, and spectacle.

Abstract

The current study was intended to find out Sayuri’s adolescence development in Arthur Golden Memoirs of a Geisha and the influences of peers towards Sayuri’s adolescence in Arthur Golden Memoirs of a Geisha. This study used descriptive qualitative method. In analysing the data, some steps were adopted by by classifying and explaining the data based on the theories, and paraphrasing and analysing the quotations related to the problems. Based on the data analysis, there are three aspects of getting her personality, namely searching for identity; the adolescence rebellion; adolescent sexuality. The influence of peers based on two aspects, namely the relationship between peers and the interaction between peers. In their relationship, peers influence how to talk, dress, and be as a perfect woman. In their interaction, the influences occurred to build up the attitude and personality.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to find out the types of associative meaning in proverbs in Bajawa language used by people in Doka village. There were five types of associative meaning, stylistic or social meaning, effective meaning, reflective meaning, and collocative meaning as stated by Leech (1981). This study used qualitative method to analyze the data. Collecting data adopted was that the writer is the main instrument by preparing the list of proverbs in Bajawa language used by people in Doka village, then, choosing some native speakers to complete the data. Data analysis was by classifying proverbs into five types of associative meaning. The analysis shows that there are four types associative meaning can be found on proverbs. Proverbs are used in different context. They are in birth context, wedding context, reba context, process of building the traditional house and death context, affective meaning found in proverbs of wedding context. The result shows that there are 103 proverbs used by people in Doka village. The writer found there are 65 proverbs in connotative meaning, 8 proverbs in stylistic or social, 25 proverbs in affective meaning and 5 proverbs in reflective meaning. Those proverbs are used in different context.

Abstract

The aims of this study were to find out kinds of supernatural power experienced by the main character and find out the differences and similarities of supernatural in both of films. The research design was qualitative research method. This research used theory of Supernatural Power by Jonathan C. Smith and theory of Comparative Study by Robert John Clemens. The data were in the form of utterances and actions. The type of data used in this study consists of two films. The result shows that there are five kinds of supernatural power as seen in Wonder Woman film and Captain Marvel film. Kinds of supernatural power find in Wonder Woman film are telekinesis or psychokinesis, telepathy, and sixth sense while in Captain Marvel film; the kinds of supernatural power are telekinesis and retro cognition. Meanwhile, the similarities found are, plot, genre, and history and literary criticism. On the other hand, the differences found are, movement and generation, theme, and myth

Abstract

This study aimed at finding the characteristics of the characters in Sophocles' Drama Oedipus Rex, as well as to deconstruct the characterization of the characters that have been found and brought out the other side of the characteristics of each character. Descriptive qualitative method was used to analyze the data in this study. The data were analyzed by reading and selecting data from the utterances in the drama dialogue. Then the data were analyzed using deconstruction theory on the characterization of the characters in the drama. The theory used was the deconstruction theory discovered by Jacques Derrida. The result of the analysis shows that firstly, the characters are Oedipus, Jocasta, Creon, and Tiresias. Each character has characteristics. Oedipus has the characteristics of being wise, brave, and is also a helpful figure. Jocasta is a kind character, Creon is a fair figure, and Tiresias is a wise figure. However, after being deconstructed, each characteristic has opposite characteristics so that the other side can be revealed. Oedipus is characterized as a silly, a coward, and a betrayer figure. Jocasta has bad characteristics. Meanwhile, Creon has unfair characteristics, and Tiresias has a selfish characteristic.

Abstract

This study aimed to find the types of colloquial expression in 22 Jump Street movie based on the theory proposed by Partridge, namely single word, clipped word, short picturesque, contraction, verb-adverb combination (compound words). This study used a qualitative descriptive method. The data in this study used observation method. The data is form words and phrase. The results of this study indicate that among the five types of colloquial expression proposed by Partridge there are 4 types of colloquial expression consist of 73 data found in 22 Jump Street movie, namely single word (21), clipped word (7), contraction (35), verb-adverb combination (compound word) (10)

Abstract

This study aimed to know the stereotype of beauty myth, the consequence of Professional Beauty Qualification and the vital lies of beauty from the character of Makiko depicted in the novel Breasts and Eggs by Mieko Kawakami through the beauty myth theory. The research design used qualitative research method. This study used beauty myth theory to analyze the myth of beauty that occured in the main character Makiko. The data in this study were taken from quotations such as word, phrases, dialogue and sentences. The results of this study indicate that (1) Makiko the main character experienced the beauty myth cause by the stereotype of beauty that emerged the three assesments of beauty, which is: phisique, mentall, and skill (2) the beauty myth endure by Makiko create the Professional Beauty Qualification (PBQ) standard that cause the consequences of the Professional Beauty Qualification standard in the work, of the six consequences in theory, there are five consequence in this analysis, which is: The PBQ reinforces the double standard, the PBQ reinforces the double standard, the PBQ keep women materially and psychologically poor, it tires women out, it keeps women isolated, and it uses her body to convey her economic role (3) from the consequences of PBQ create the vital lies of beauty.

Abstract

The aims of the study were to find out the types of oppression experienced by Bride and Sweetness and know the Struggles of Bride and Sweetnees in the God Help the Child. The researcher used the oppression theory by Iris Marion Young to determine the types of oppression experienced by Bride and Sweetness. The research applies African–American literary criticism to analyze woman oppression in Toni Morrison’s God Help the Child. This study used a qualitative descriptive method by looking at Bride and Sweetness struggle againts oppression. This study only focuses on the novel God Help the Child as the object of analysis, and as the subject of analysis focus on the main characters, Bride and Sweetness. The result mentions that there are five types of oppression experienced by Bride and Sweetness in different conditions. The types are exploitation, marginalization, powerlessness, cultural imperialism and violence. Another result is about Bride and Sweetness’s struggle to fight against their oppression. As they experience their own oppression, they have different effort. Bride finally overcomes her trauma and accepts her past, whereas, until the end, people don’t know Sweetness’s blackness since she never revealed it.

Abstract

This research aimed at finding out the types and influencing factors of Code Switching in Bilingual Children Found in Suka Damai Play Group of Kotakeo. It was conducted in Kotakeo village, Nangaroro sub-district of Nagekeo regency. This study used descriptive qualitative method in analyzing the Code Switching Found in suka Damai Play Group. The theory of Wardaugh (2002) was used to discuss the types of code switching and the Holmes’ theory (2001) used to discuss the influencing factors. The result of this study indicates that were two types of code switching: situational code switching and intra-sentential code switching. The influencing factors of code switching were status and topic. The uniqueness of this research were found one of the two types of code switching which very dominant was situational code switching that influenced by topic in bilingual children found in Suka Damai Play Group of Kotakeo.
