Abstract

Halal tourism in Indonesia continues to grow, but research examining psychological and digital factors influencing the decision to choose halal tourist destinations among Generation Z and Millennials remains limited. This study aims to analyze the influence of attitude, knowledge, social media, and halal awareness on the decision to choose halal tourist destinations among Muslims aged 18–44 years in Indonesia. The study used an explanatory quantitative approach through an online survey with purposive sampling of 175 respondents. The data were analyzed using multiple linear regression after passing the validity, reliability, and classical assumption tests. The results showed that attitude, knowledge, social media, and halal awareness had a positive and significant effect on the decision to choose a halal tourist destination. The coefficient of determination value of 0.866 indicates that the variation in the decision to choose halal tourist destinations in this model can be explained by the variables tested. These findings show that the halal tourism decisions of the younger generation are influenced by psychological factors, knowledge, and exposure to social media. The implication is that destination managers need to strengthen halal literacy, credible digital content, and Muslim-friendly facilities.

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the influence of religiosity, lifestyle and Sharia financial literacy on paylater usage behaviour in North Sumatra. This study employs a quantitative approach using a survey method involving 100 students from the Faculty of Islamic Economics and Business at the State Islamic University of North Sumatra who have used or are currently using paylater services. The data were analysed using multiple linear regression with the aid of SPSS. The results indicate that, taken together, all independent variables have a significant influence on ‘PayLater’ usage behaviour. However, when analysed individually, only religiosity has a significant influence, whilst lifestyle and Sharia financial literacy do not have a significant influence. These findings indicate the existence of a gap between religious values and financial behaviour (value-behaviour gap), whereby a high level of religiosity is not always accompanied by financial practices that conform to Sharia principles. The coefficient of determination of 0.506 indicates that the research model has a reasonably strong explanatory power. This study makes an empirical contribution to understanding the use of ‘paylater’ services among Muslim students and emphasises that the implementation of religious values and Sharia financial literacy needs to be strengthened in a more practical manner in order to foster financial behaviour that is in line with the principles of Islamic economics.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of Zakat, Infak, and Sedekah (ZIS), poverty, and unemployment rates on the Human Development Index (HDI) before and during the COVID-19 pandemic from 2018 to 2022 using panel data from 27 districts in West Java. The research method used in this study is quantitative with a Fixed Effect Model (FEM) panel data regression analysis method using secondary data obtained from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) and the National Zakat Agency (BAZNAS). The results of this study indicate that ZIS has a positive and significant effect on the Human Development Index in West Java. In addition, poverty and unemployment rates have a negative and significant effect on the HDI. Furthermore, the COVID-19 dummy variable shows a difference in HDI achievement between the pre-pandemic and pandemic periods. The results of this study are expected to serve as a reference for local governments and policy makers in formulating strategies to improve human development through the optimization of ZIS and the control of poverty and unemployment, so that the HDI in West Java can increase sustainably.   Keywords: ZIS; Human Development Index; Poverty; unemployment

Abstract

This study aims to explore how BAZNAS implements zakat programs based on the SDGs framework, particularly in achieving SDG target number 8, which focuses on inclusive economic growth and creating an inclusive work environment for individuals with disabilities. This study uses a qualitative method with a case study approach, supported by quantitative data analysis. Data were collected through interviews and a review of relevant literature. This study examines the role of BAZNAS in supporting economic empowerment through productive zakat programs, and how these programs contribute to achieving sustainable and inclusive economic growth targets in line with the SDGs agenda. In this context, the research explores the challenges faced in program implementation, including institutional, cultural, and technical constraints. In addition, this study also examines the impact of zakat on the empowerment of vulnerable communities, including persons with disabilities, with a focus on efforts to create job opportunities and supportive environments. The research results show that BAZNAS plays a significant role in supporting inclusive economic growth through productive zakat schemes. However, there are several challenges regarding program sustainability and community participation. The implications of this research are expected to provide insights for stakeholders in formulating more inclusive policies to support the achievement of the SDGs, especially in the sectors of disability and economic empowerment.

Abstract

Indonesia, with the largest Muslim population globally, holds significant potential for a sustainable halal economy. Strengthening halal industry infrastructure, particularly in the halal meat supply chain, requires innovative financing mechanisms. This study develops a conceptual framework for integrating productive waqf as a strategic financing instrument to support halal-certified infrastructure, enhance supply chain coordination, and promote inclusive economic growth. Using a qualitative descriptive approach based on an interpretive literature review, the study synthesizes academic, institutional, and policy sources related to waqf governance, Islamic social finance, and halal value chain development. Findings indicate that productive waqf can function as institutional capital to address infrastructure gaps, empower communities, and reinforce halal-compliant enterprises. The study contributes to the literature on Islamic social finance by conceptualizing waqf as infrastructure financing within halal supply chains and provides policy insights for policymakers, regulators, and Islamic financial institutions to strengthen a sustainable halal ecosystem in Indonesia.

Abstract

The increasing growth of sharia investment in Indonesia has encouraged greater participation among university students, making it important to identify the factors influencing their interest in sharia investment. This study aims to analyze the effect of income from part-time employment and investment motivation on students’ interest in sharia investment. This study employed a quantitative approach using a survey method by distributing questionnaires to 98 respondents selected through probability sampling. The data were analyzed using the Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) method with SmartPLS 4. The results indicate that income from part-time employment has a positive and significant effect on students’ interest in sharia investment (t = 3.557, p < 0.001). Investment motivation also has a positive and significant effect (t = 6.946, p < 0.001) and exerts a stronger influence than income. Furthermore, both variables explain 55.9% of the variance in students’ interest in sharia investment (Adjusted R² = 0.559). These findings imply that universities should strengthen sharia investment education and encourage students to improve their financial capability and investment motivation to enhance participation in sharia investment.

Abstract

Indonesia’s demographic dividend presents both opportunities and challenges, particularly as high unemployment among the working-age population risks hindering the younger generation’s economic independence; thus, sustainable empowerment strategies through the use of productive zakat are needed. This study aims to analyze the influence of educa-tion and training in the Rumah Gemilang Indonesia (RGI) Program of LAZ Al Azhar in Depok City on the economic independence of alumni. The study employs an associative quantitative approach with a sample of 96 alumni selected via simple random sampling. Data were collected through questionnaires and analyzed using Partial Least Squares–Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The results indicate that education and training have a positive and significant effect on economic independence. This suggests that edu-cation and training based on productive zakat contribute to promoting economic inde-pendence. These findings indicate that the utilization of productive zakat through educa-tion and training can serve as an effective empowerment strategy to enhance the economic independence of zakat recipients and strengthen the empowerment programs of zakat in-stitutions.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of the halal thoyib principle in beef consumption among the Muslim community of Tembung Village. The halal thoyib principle is a fundamental concept in Islam that emphasizes not only the legality of food according to Islamic law, but also its wholesomeness, cleanliness, safety, and health aspects. This research employed a qualitative approach using a case study method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with six informants consisting of consumers and beef sellers, supported by field observations. The findings indicate that the community prioritizes the halal aspect in beef consumption, particularly regarding Islamic slaughtering practices and trust in Muslim sellers. However, the thoyib aspect has not been comprehensively understood or fully implemented. The community tends to perceive thoyib merely as the physical freshness of meat, with limited attention to sanitation, hygiene, and post-slaughter handling. Social trust and religiosity play a significant role in shaping consumption behavior, while limited knowledge and facilities hinder the optimal implementation of the halal thoyib principle. This study concludes that the implementation of the halal thoyib principle in beef consumption in Tembung Village remains partial, highlighting the need for continuous education and assistance to enhance public awareness of holistic halal and thoyib food consumption.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze coffee farmers’ perceptions of product quality, digital marketing, and brand image of Gayo coffee, and their impact on farmer welfare in the Islamic economic perspective in Southeast Aceh Regency. The background of this study is based on the gap between the theory of Islamic welfare (falah) and the actual reality experienced by coffee farmers, where despite producing approximately 15,000 tons of coffee per year, the average monthly income of farmers is only IDR 2–3 million. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with phenomenological methods, involving in-depth interviews with 20 coffee farmers in Southeast Aceh selected through purposive sampling. The results show that farmers’ perceptions of product quality are still limited to the raw processing stage, without adequate knowledge of post-harvest standards and halal certification. Digital marketing has not been optimally utilized due to low digital literacy and lack of structured promotional strategies. The brand image of local Gayo coffee has not been strongly established at the retail level. From an Islamic economic perspective, the existing marketing system has not reflected the principles of justice (‘adl), transparency (syafafiyah), and equitable distribution of benefits. This study contributes to the development of agribusiness studies based on Islamic economics and serves as the basis for formulating fairer and more sustainable coffee marketing strategies in Southeast Aceh.

Abstract

Economic growth is a key indicator of regional economic performance, yet it remains vulnerable to macroeconomic fluctuations caused by inflation, financial intermediation, and labor market conditions. This study aims to analyze the short-run and long-run effects of inflation, Islamic bank financing, and the unemployment rate on economic growth in Medan City. A quantitative research approach was employed using the Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) with 40 quarterly secondary data observations covering the period from 2016 to 2025. The Granger causality test identified a unidirectional relationship from economic growth to the unemployment rate and from inflation to Islamic bank financing. The long-run VECM estimation revealed that inflation has a significant negative effect on economic growth, whereas in the short run it exerts a significant positive effect due to moderate demand-pull inflation. Islamic bank financing and the unemployment rate showed no significant partial effects in either the short run or the long run. The Impulse Response Function indicated that inflation shocks initially generated negative responses before converging toward equilibrium, while unemployment shocks produced gradually diminishing positive responses. Variance Decomposition confirmed that economic growth is primarily explained by its own innovations, with unemployment contributing the largest external shock. These findings imply that maintaining price stability and strengthening the informal labor sector are essential for enhancing the long-term macroeconomic resilience of Medan City.
