Abstract

Rising incomes and urbanization have increased consumer demand for safer food. In Malaysia, concerns over pesticide use and international produce recalls have further emphasised the importance of enhancing food safety attributes to meet changing consumer preferences. Therefore, this study attempts to determine consumers’ willingness to pay for safety attributes of carrots. The survey was conducted in the Klang Valley, with 490 respondents successfully responding to the questionnaires. The study employed the discrete choice experiment (DCE), and the findings revealed that consumers were willing to pay more for carrots food safety attributes. The study also found that other factors that can influence the willingness to pay for safety attributes of carrots include income, education level and age. These findings underscore the importance of complying with safety standards for fresh produce since consumers are willing to pay more for safety attributes of carrot.

Abstract

The rapid advancement of the digital economy presents both opportunities and challenges for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), particularly in the agribusiness sector. The study examined the extent of the readiness of agribusiness MSMEs to face the digital economy and investigated the effect of driving and barrier factors on the digital economy readiness of agribusiness MSMEs. A quantitative approach was employed, with data from 124 MSMEs analyzed using descriptive statistics and PLS-SEM. The findings indicated that the highest readiness score was observed in digital literacy and skills, representing the people indicator. However, financial constraints and inadequate digital infrastructure remained significant barriers. Furthermore, consumer pressure and top management support were identified as critical drivers of digital readiness. The study enriches the existing literature on digital readiness in the agribusiness MSME sector by providing empirical insights from West Sulawesi, an underdeveloped province often overlooked in academic discourse. To support the digital transformation of agribusiness MSMEs, policies should prioritize practical capacity-building, expand access to reliable digital infrastructure, and ensure that inclusive financial services reach even the most remote business actors.

Abstract

Despite the growing implementation of CSR programs in agricultural communities, empirical evidence on how farmers perceive and accept these interventions remains limited, particularly in developing countries. Understanding the determinants of farmer acceptance is essential for improving CSR program effectiveness and sustainability. This study aims to measure the level of farmer acceptance of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs and to determine the key factors that influence it. The SERVQUAL model was used to analyze farmers' expectations and acceptance levels across five dimensions: reliability, tangibility, responsiveness, empathy, and assurance. Multiple linear regression analysis was applied after confirming normality, linearity, and multicollinearity assumptions to examine the relationships among farmers' acceptance and the independent variables, including expectation, income, age, education, land size, experience, household size, and organization. This study was conducted in Kutai Timur Regency, Kalimantan Timur Province, through a survey of 114 farming households receiving CSR assistance, selected using a multistage sampling technique. Research results indicate that farmer acceptance of CSR programs is relatively low. The study found that expectations and income were significant positive drivers of farmer acceptance, while social interaction and training had a significant negative effect. It is recommended that CSR program managers prioritize initiatives that demonstrably increase farmers' income and focus on long-term, sustainable benefits, particularly in the oil palm and animal husbandry sectors, to enhance program acceptability and effectiveness. This study introduces a novel SERVQUAL‑based framework to assess farmers’ acceptance of agricultural CSR programs and generate practical insights for program design and implementation.

Abstract

Food security for small-scale producers is intrinsically linked to the sustainability of family farming. In spite of its importance to Brazilian agribusiness, the sector of household agriculture remains vulnerable due to the lack of technical resources and infrastructure. This study evaluated the impact of the Village Program Brazil on crop productivity and blue water footprint among small-scale family farms in Barreiras and Balsas between 2019 and 2023. Using a longitudinal methodological framework, including initial farm assessments and selection of participants, support network establishment, risk-management data collection, and a decoupling analysis based on the Tapio and Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index (LMDI) methods, the study monitored the implementation of 40 cisterns, 60 irrigation kits, and specialized training in pest and soil management. Results indicated that these interventions significantly enhanced food security in the studied areas: crop productivity in Barreiras rose from 745 to 9,181 kg/ha, while the blue water footprint dropped from 22.7 to 2.0 L/kg, being denoted strong decoupling of blue water footprint from crop production by the Tapio index, and linked to even contribution of program expansion and technological improvements over the program’s timespan by the LMDI index. Our findings further suggest that moving towards sustainable intensification of family farming is dependent on a "triad" of support: water distribution infrastructure, continuous technical guidance on management practices, and professional market integration. Taken together, the outcomes of Village Program Brazil provide a scalable model for public policies aimed at rural development.

Abstract

The current understanding of food security significantly impacts agricultural policy, especially regarding the availability of food to meet local and national needs. The Banggai yam is a local carbohydrate crop in Banggai Islands Regency that plays a vital role in food diversification and security. Thanks to its high carbohydrate content, this tuber has great potential as a food reserve and an alternative to rice to support food sovereignty in Banggai Islands Regency. To cope with the increasing demand, a comprehensive development plan is needed. This research aims to develop a model of Banggai yam production and needs as a fulfilment of food availability in the Banggai Islands Regency. This research uses a dynamic system approach. The dynamic system can describe the relationship between various variables in its development. The results of the study indicate that the current level of Banggai yam production is insufficient to meet overall demand. Currently, there is a production deficit of 1,703.54 tons for Banggai yam in 2018, which is projected to decrease to 1,514.9 tons by 2042. Simulation results indicate that with a 1.2 percent increase in the planting index, a 1 percent expansion of new land, and a 4 percent increase in exports in Scenario 1, which is overall moderate, a surplus of 3.3 tons will be achieved, with production reaching 11,846.8 tons and demand at 11,843.5 tons. This scenario will meet the total demand for Banggai yam until 2042. Successful implementation depends on the involvement of various stakeholders, including the government, farmers, and businesses involved in Banggai sweet potato production, making this commodity a flagship food product in Banggai Islands Regency.

Abstract

Building resilient agri-food systems requires not only technological innovation but also consumer trust, ethical alignment, and inclusive digital platforms. This study examined how multidimensional consumption values relate to digital trust and how digital trust is associated with online ethical purchase intention (EPI) and agribusiness resilience in ethical agri-food e-commerce. The model also included post-purchase satisfaction as a reinforcing factor and perceived risk as both a boundary condition and a direct predictor of digital trust. Survey data from 253 consumers in Central Java who had prior experience purchasing ethically certified coffee through digital platforms were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The results revealed that consumption values were positively associated with digital trust, which in turn was positively associated with EPI and agribusiness resilience. Post-purchase satisfaction was positively related to digital trust, whereas perceived risk was negatively related to digital trust and slightly weakened the relationship between consumption values and digital trust. Given the cross-sectional design and the predictive purpose of PLS-SEM, these relationships should be interpreted as predictive associations rather than causal effects. These findings highlight the importance of transparent information, credible certification signals, and risk-reduction mechanisms in supporting ethical consumption and more inclusive agribusiness outcomes. However, the generalizability of the findings was limited by the purposive sampling of experienced ethical buyers in a single region.

Abstract

Demand for organic produce has expanded rapidly in response to increasing consumer awareness of health and environmental concerns. Despite this growth, small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) organic farms in Thailand continue to face significant operational and financial constraints in meeting demand in a sustainable manner. This study employs an integrated analytical framework combining the Theory of Constraints (TOC) and linear programming (LP) to optimize crop planning and resource allocation within an SME organic farming system. The analysis identifies land availability as the primary production bottleneck and evaluates alternative cropping strategies under varying demand scenarios. Results indicate that improved allocation of land and adjustments in planting schedules can enhance overall financial performance. However, profitability remains highly sensitive to demand conditions and seasonal resource constraints. Furthermore, the findings reveal that diversified crop portfolios may conceal inefficiencies, as profitable crops can offset losses from less viable ones, suggesting that diversification does not necessarily enhance resilience. This study contributes a practical decision-support approach for SME organic farmers to better align production decisions with market demand, improve economic performance, and promote long-term sustainability.

Abstract

Climate-smart agriculture (CSA) has gained increasing attention as a strategy to enhance agricultural productivity and resilience under changing climatic conditions. However, empirical evidence on whether CSA adoption improves the technical efficiency of farm production remains limited, particularly in developing countries. This study determined the technical efficiency of climate-smart agriculture (CSA) practices in crop production in the North Central of Vietnam by comparing CSA adopters and non-adopters (traditional farms). Using cross-sectional data from 302 farm households, this study employed the stochastic production frontier, combined with a propensity score matching approach, to correct the sample selection bias. The findings disclosed that the average estimate of the technical efficiency level of the corrected sample selection reached 80.33 percent. CSA farming practices were technically more efficient than traditional farming practices in both stochastic production frontier models, conventional and sample selection. This study recommends that authorities provide more training on CSA practices to farmers, enhancing their knowledge and encouraging adoption. In addition, boosting the assistance from extension services and credit access related to CSA adoption has become necessary to encourage farmers to adopt and improve the technical efficiency of farm production.
