Abstract

Introduction: Malocclusion is an abnormal alignment of the teeth and an improper relationship between the maxillary and mandibular teeth in centric occlusion, which may affect mastication, speech, swallowing, and facial esthetics. Removable orthodontic appliances are commonly used for mild to moderate malocclusion cases, although treatment success greatly depends on patient compliance. Objective: This case report aims to describe the management of removable orthodontic treatment in correcting mandibular anterior tooth malposition. Case Report: A 24-year-old female patient presented to Soelastri Dental Hospital, Surakarta, with a complaint of crowded lower anterior teeth causing food impaction and reduced self-confidence. Clinical examination revealed Angle Class I malocclusion modified by Dewey type 1 with skeletal Class I relationship, spacing between teeth 23–24 and 24–25, and individual tooth malpositions, particularly in the mandibular anterior region. Case Management: Treatment was performed using maxillary and mandibular removable orthodontic appliances with continuous spring, finger spring, selective grinding, and periodic activations over five control visits. Discussion: Improvement in the alignment of the four mandibular incisors was observed through orthodontic tooth movement and alveolar bone remodeling. However, the correction was not fully optimal due to inadequate patient compliance in wearing the appliance. Conclusion: Removable orthodontic appliances are effective for mild to moderate malposition correction when used consistently and accompanied by regular follow-up visits. Conclusion: Improvement in tooth malposition was observed, although the result was not yet optimal, most likely due to inadequate patient compliance in wearing the appliance.

Abstract

Representing a pervasive global and national health concern, stunting reflects prolonged nutritional deprivation that affects early childhood development irrespective of gender. To evaluate this phenomenon, a cross-sectional quantitative analysis was executed to examine the empirical association between dietary regimens and stunting incidents among toddlers aged 24–59 months in the operational zone of the Kajhu Public Health Center, Baitussalam, Aceh Besar. Deploying a structured ordinal questionnaire for primary data collection from May 20 to June 11, 2025, this investigation involved 169 strategically sampled respondents extracted from a total population of 952 children. Univariate and bivariate analytical frameworks, specifically the Chi-Square test, were employed for data elucidation. The empirical assessment demonstrated that 62.1% (n=105) of the participants were stunted, whereas 37.7% (n=64) exhibited normal growth metrics; furthermore, inappropriate feeding regimens were observed in 57.4% (n=97) of the cohort compared to 42.6% (n=72) with adequate dietary compliance. Based on the inferential statistical test, a significance value of p = 0.000$ (p < 0.05) was obtained, necessitating the rejection of the null hypothesis and confirming a robust correlation between childhood nutritional intake configurations and stunting prevalence. These empirical findings underscore the critical urgency for intensified parental oversight and strategic dietary optimizations as primary preventative measure.

Abstract

Final-year students often experience anxiety while preparing their scientific papers, which can interfere with academic performance and psychological well-being. This condition generally arises from the pressure of completing final assignments, high academic demands, limited time, and fear of failure in meeting graduation requirements. One non-pharmacological approach that can be used to reduce this anxiety is Butterfly Hug therapy. Butterfly Hug is a simple self-regulation relaxation technique involving gentle, alternating taps on the chest and shoulder area, designed to stimulate the body’s calming response system. This technique is known to help individuals achieve relaxation, improve concentration, and maintain emotional stability during stressful situations. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of Butterfly Hug therapy on students’ anxiety levels during the preparation of their scientific papers. The study used a quasi-experimental design with a one-group pretest–posttest approach. The sample consisted of 15 students selected through purposive sampling based on inclusion criteria. Data were collected using the Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (Z-SAS). The intervention was conducted for three consecutive days, with each session lasting 10 minutes. The study was carried out from June 16–20, 2025 at the Diploma III Nursing Program, Faculty of Health Sciences, Abulyatama University, Aceh Besar. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The results showed a significant decrease in anxiety levels with a p-value of 0.002 (p < 0.05), indicating that Butterfly Hug therapy is effective in reducing student anxiety.

Abstract

Anemia among adolescent girls remains a significant nutritional problem that affects health status, learning ability, and future productivity. One of the main contributing factors is inadequate intake of iron and vitamin B12, which are essential for hemoglobin formation. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between the consumption of iron- and vitamin B12-rich foods and the incidence of anemia among adolescent girls in Tuban District. This study employed a non-experimental design with a correlational analytic approach using a cross-sectional method. A total of 325 adolescent girls were selected using probability sampling with cluster random sampling. Data on iron and vitamin B12 intake were collected using a Semi Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ), while anemia status was assessed through hemoglobin levels. Data were analyzed using the Spearman Rank test with a significance level of α ≤ 0.05. The results showed that 68% of respondents were not anemic, while 32% were anemic. There was a significant relationship between iron intake and anemia (p=0.000; r=0.563) and between vitamin B12 intake and anemia (p=0.000; r=0.384), both indicating moderate correlation strength. In conclusion, iron and vitamin B12 consumption are significantly associated with anemia among adolescent girls. Higher intake of these nutrients is linked to a lower risk of anemia. These findings highlight the importance of nutrition education and balanced dietary practices in preventing anemia among adolescent girls.

Abstract

Background: Oral habits are repetitive behaviors performed over an extended period. One such habit is lip biting, which can affect the alignment of the teeth and influence the anatomical development of the oral cavity and jaws. This habit may contribute to the development of Class II and Class III malocclusions and can be associated with deep overbite and increased overjet. Objective: To evaluate the effect of the relatively uncommon habit of lip biting on malocclusion and dentofacial changes in patients. Methods: A literature review was conducted using articles retrieved from the PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Wiley databases. The inclusion criteria consisted of full-text articles published within the last five years. Discussion: Lip-biting habits have been associated with a higher prevalence of malocclusion, particularly among children aged 3–9 years during the mixed dentition stage, and are more frequently observed in females. Malocclusion resulting from lower lip-biting habits is commonly characterized by Class II malocclusion accompanied by deep overbite and increased overjet. Conclusion: Lip-biting habits can influence the form and anatomical structure of both intraoral and extraoral tissues, especially when the habit persists with high frequency and for a prolonged duration. Therefore, early prevention and intervention are essential to reduce the risk of malocclusion development in children.

Abstract

Physical activity constitutes an essential component of healthy aging, particularly for older adults residing in nursing homes, as they are more susceptible to physical deterioration and limited social interaction. The purpose of this study was to provide an overview of physical activity behavior among elderly residents of Minaula Ranooha Nursing Home, Kendari City, in 2026 by applying the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) proposed by Ajzen. This research utilized a quantitative descriptive method with a cross-sectional design. The study involved 30 respondents selected through total sampling from a total population of 35 elderly residents. Data collection was conducted using a structured questionnaire designed to assess the four TPB dimensions, namely attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control, and behavioral intention, measured on a five-point Likert scale. Descriptive statistical analysis was performed using frequencies and percentages. The findings revealed that most participants were between 60 and 69 years old (53.3%) and male (56.7%). In addition, a large proportion of respondents demonstrated favorable attitudes toward physical activity (70.0%), positive subjective norms (80.0%), positive perceived behavioral control (66.7%), and strong intentions to participate in physical activity (86.7%). These results indicate that the three principal TPB constructs contribute collectively to the development of strong intentions to engage in regular physical activity among elderly individuals. Furthermore, nursing home-based programs appear to have an important influence on fostering supportive social environments and positive perceptions related to physical activity. Therefore, continuous implementation of structured physical activity initiatives accompanied by social encouragement is necessary to sustain and improve healthy.

Abstract

Background: Pulpotomy is one of the vital pulp treatments commonly performed on primary teeth with pulp involvement due to deep caries. However, pulpotomy failure remains a significant clinical problem with varying failure rate reported across studies. Aim: This literature review aims to analyze the causes of pulpotomy treatment failure in primary teeth based on current scientific evidence. Method: This study is a qualitative research using a literature review method with secondary data obtained during May 2026 through database searches of PubMed, Science Direct, MDPI, DOAJ, and Garuda using related keywords. The retrieved articles were then selected using a PRISMA flow diagram to obtain several main articles. Results: Based on PRISMA selection, four main articles meeting the inclusion criteria were obtained for this literature review. The review findings indicate that pulpotomy treatment failure in primary teeth is caused by operator clinical technique errors including incomplete coronal pulp tissue removal and inadequate caries excavation resulting in secondary caries formation; inadequate final restoration due to poor marginal adaptation; and inappropriate pulpotomy material selection. Pulpotomy failure may result in pulp necrosis, internal and external root resorption, periapical infection, abscess or fistula, pathological tooth mobility, and gingival inflammation. Conclusion: Pulpotomy failure in primary teeth is influenced by various interrelated factors. Therefore, treatment success depends on the precision of comprehensive procedural execution, necessitating improved clinical standards to minimize the risk of failure.

Abstract

Porphyra sp. seaweed is a marine biological resource with significant potential as a functional food ingredient, particularly in the coastal regions of Indonesia. This study aims to analyze the macronutrient content of Porphyra sp. from Desa Allang, Ambon Island, and to evaluate its potential as a functional food source based on local nutritional resources. Protein, carbohydrate, fat, moisture, and ash contents were analyzed using the AOAC method. The results indicate that Porphyra sp. contains 13.77% protein, 15.78% carbohydrates, and 1.35% fat, reflecting a high nutritional value with low fat content, thus meeting the characteristics of functional foods that provide health benefits to the community. The moisture content obtained was 11.55%, which is relatively low and is suspected to be influenced by the drying method using an oven. Furthermore, the ash content of 21.66% indicates a relatively high mineral content, contributing additional nutritional value that supports biological functions and overall health. The macronutrient composition is influenced by environmental factors such as habitat, water depth, water quality, and the growth phase of the seaweed. With its comprehensive nutritional profile, Porphyra sp. holds promise as a raw material for functional food development that not only fulfills nutritional requirements but also supports the enhancement of public health.

Abstract

Oxidative stress induced by cigarette smoke exposure can cause damage to various organs, including the kidneys and liver. Noni leaves (Morinda citrifolia) are known to possess high antioxidant activity that may protect against such damage. This study aimed to evaluate the histopathological changes in the liver and kidneys of male rats exposed to cigarette smoke and treated with methanol extract of noni leaves. A true experimental design was employed using 40 male rats randomly divided into five groups: a negative control group and four treatment groups exposed to cigarette smoke with varying doses of noni leaf extract (0, 100, 200, and 300 mg/kg body weight) administered for 52 days. Kidney and liver tissues were collected, processed histologically, and stained with hematoxylin-eosin for microscopic examination. The results showed that cigarette smoke exposure caused renal damage characterized by glomerular injury, tubular necrosis, and hemorrhage. However, administration of noni leaf extract, particularly at doses of 200 and 300 mg/kg, demonstrated protective effects by reducing the severity of renal histological damage. These findings suggest that noni leaf extract has a dose-dependent renoprotective potential against oxidative stress induced by cigarette smoke, possibly attributed to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and free radical-scavenging activities. Further research is recommended to explore its hepatoprotective effects and underlying molecular mechanisms.
