Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Introduction: Allergic conjunctivitis is an immune-mediated ocular inflammation, and this study reviews evidence on the association between vitamin D levels and disease severity in adults. Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar for articles published between 2015 and 2025. Observational studies and clinical trials evaluating vitamin D status in adults with AC were included. Of 50 articles screened, four studies comprising 375 adult participants fulfilled the eligibility criteria. Extracted data included study design, vitamin D measurement methods, clinical outcomes, and statistical results. Risk of bias was assessed using ROBINS-I and Cochrane RoB 2.0, and the review followed PRISMA guidelines. Results: The included studies consisted of two observational studies and two clinical trials. Lower vitamin D levels were significantly associated with more severe AC symptoms in two observational studies. One clinical trial demonstrated mild symptomatic improvement following vitamin D supplementation, while another showed no significant effect. Variations in diagnostic criteria, laboratory methods, and confounding factors limited comparability. Conclusion: Lower vitamin D levels may enhance AC severity in adults. Further robust clinical trials are warranted to confirm these findings and to explore vitamin D supplementation's therapeutic role.

Abstract

Introduction: Dry eye disease (DED) is a multifactorial disorder involving tear film instability and ocular surface inflammation. Oral omega-3 fatty acids have been investigated as adjunctive therapy due to their anti-inflammatory and tear-stabilizing effects. Methods: This systematic review followed PRISMA guidelines and included randomized controlled trials and prospective studies published up to August 2025. Databases searched were PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library. Primary outcomes were tear break-up time and patient-reported symptoms, with secondary outcomes including Schirmer test results, ocular surface staining, inflammatory markers, and adverse events. Results: Fifteen studies across various DED subtypes were included. Most reported improvements in tear film stability and symptoms, although two large trials found no significant benefit. Omega-3 supplementation was generally safe, with mild gastrointestinal effects. Conclusion: Oral omega-3 supplementation is safe and shows moderate efficacy as an adjunctive therapy for dry eye disease, particularly in patients with tear film instability and ocular surface inflammation. Variability in outcomes across studies highlights the need for standardized formulations, optimal dosing regimens, and subgroup-specific recommendations in future trials.

Abstract

Introduction: Angle-closure glaucoma (ACG) is a leading cause of permanent blindness, especially in Asia. Conventional therapies often fail to provide long-term intraocular pressure (IOP) control. Ultrasound Cycloplasty (UCP), a high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) technology, lowers IOP through selective coagulation of the ciliary processes. This review aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of UCP in patients with ACG. Methods: A literature search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and Wiley until October 2025. Inclusion studies included ACG patients undergoing UCP with reported IOP outcomes, antiglaucoma medication use, and complications. Meta-analysis used a random-effects model and sensitivity analysis with a fixed-effects model. Results: Four studies involving 142 eyes were analyzed. UCP reduced IOP by 18.12 mmHg, though not statistically significant (95% CI –1.27 to 37.51) with very high heterogeneity (I² = 99%). Antiglaucoma medication use decreased significantly (MD 1.79; p = 0.02). Early/mild complications were more common than late/severe complications. Sensitivity analysis showed stable results with reduced heterogeneity. Conclusion: UCP is potentially effective in reducing IOP and antiglaucoma medication use in ACG patients, with an acceptable safety profile. However, considerable inter-study variability suggests that prospective studies are needed.

Abstract

Introduction: Eyedrops are primary treatment for many eye conditions, and patients often struggle with self-administration. In busy clinics, patients often receive little instruction on self-administration, and short instructional videos offer a practical solution. Study evaluated the impact of a short video on self-efficacy in eyedrop application. Methods: This quasi-experimental pretest-posttest study included 30 patients from a tertiary hospital eye clinic in Central Java (February and March 2025) that randomized to Direct Education Group (DEG), Video-Based Education Group (VEG), or Direct Education Assisted by Video Group (DEVG). Eyedrop techniques were video-recorded at pretest, post-test 1, and post-test 2; Self-efficacy as primary outcome was measured by number of correctly performed steps using 13-step checklist, then analyzed using multiple linear regression. Results: 80% reported eyedrop difficulties, 90% never received education, only 13.3% watched videos despite smartphone access. All groups improved self-efficacy significantly (p<0.001). DEG declined at post-test 2 (p=0.018), while DEVG maintained gains and showed superior scores vs DEG at 2-weeks (p=0.003) Conclusion: Short instructional videos significantly improve self-efficacy in eyedrop applications, with DEVG showing the most stable retention.

Abstract

Introduction: Oculoplastic surgery continues to evolve, yet current literature remains fragmented and lacks focused synthesis of innovation-driven periocular reconstruction. This narrative review aims to critically evaluate modern reconstructive techniques and their clinical applications. Methods: A literature review was conducted using Google Scholar, PubMed, and ScienceDirect with defined search terms targeting oculoplastic reconstruction and innovation. Inclusion criteria focused on freely accessible English-language studies from 2020-2025 reporting clinical outcomes of surgical techniques. Twelve studies were selected and synthesized based on surgical approach and postoperative results. Results: Reconstructive techniques were categorized into flap-based, graft-based, and technology-assisted approaches. Flap-based techniques remain the primary choice for large defects, with high success rates. Graft-based and minimally invasive techniques offer greater aesthetic flexibility. Innovations such as minced fat grafting and dermal matrix grafts demonstrated promising outcomes with low complication rates Conclusion: Modern oculoplastic surgery balances restoration and aesthetics through patient-specific, technique-driven planning. Emerging technologies, biologically engineered materials, and refined flap designs continue to expand options in eyelid and periorbital reconstruction. These developments mark a clear shift toward biocompatible, minimally invasive, outcome-driven care.
