Abstract

Functional food is a food ingredient in addition to basic needs as nutrients that can also play a functional role in health. This research aimed to determine the physicochemical characteristics and fatty acid composition of catfish oil, red palm oil, and shark liver oil as functional food ingredients. The research method was to extract fish oil from belly flap, purify catfish oil, and process red palm oil (RPO) from crude palm oil (CPO). The analysis parameters consisted of sensory analysis, oil chemical characteristics (free fatty acid analysis, peroxide, iodine, saponification, and acid numbers), total carotene, tocopherol, and analysis of fatty acid composition. The results showed that the catfish oil after being purified had sensory characteristics, smelled slightly fishy and semi-solid, and had a bright yellow color. The results of the analysis of chemical characteristics showed that the free fatty acid numbers of catfish oil and shark liver oil were following IFOS standards (1.33 and 0.62%), and the RPO numbers for peroxide and free fatty acids according to the SNI standards (9.56 meq kg and 1.44%). The highest ω-3 and ω- 6 fatty acids were in shark liver oil (3.56 and 35.35%), followed by catfish oil (1.72 and 19.9%). and RPO does not contain ω-3 and ω-6. Catfish oil, RPO, and shark liver oil act as functional foods. The fatty acid composition of catfish, shark liver and red palm oil contains saturated and the fatty acid composition of catfish, shark liver and red palm oil contains saturated and unsaturated fatty acids. Mono and poly unsaturated fatty acid (FUFA anf MUFA) in crude catfish oil, pure catfish oil, shark liver oil, and red palm oils were 56.71, 58.12, 63.81 and 47.39% respectively. The result of analysis showed composition of in catfish oil 1.72 and 19.9 %. The content of and of shark liver oil was 3.5 and 35.5%.  Whereas in red palm oil does not Ω 3 and Ω 6. The content of EPA and DHA in shark liver oil was 0.08, 0.09 but not in catfish and red palm oil. The total content of carotene and tocopherol in red palm oil was 513.86 and 925.80 mg/kg, respectively. The nutritional composition of catfish oil, red palm oil, and shark liver oil has the potential to be used as functional food. Keywords:Characteristic physicochemicalCaroteneTocopherolω-3ω-6

Abstract

Batee Island is one of the small islands in the Aceh Besar region and is uninhabited and directly faces the Indian Ocean. Batee Island's waters have the potential for marine biota, especially coral reef ecosystems, and other associated biotas. This study aims to determine the percentage and comparison of live coral cover in Batee Island waters and determine the genus' composition in Batee Island waters. This research was conducted in October-November 2016. Collecting coral reef data using the LIT (Line Intercept Transect) method. The results showed that the live coral cover in Batee Island's waters differed between the East and West Batee Islands. The coral reefs' average condition in Batee Island waters at shallow depths (0-5m) is 41.41%, and deep (6-10m) is 36.52%. Overall, the conditions and live coral cover in the waters of Batee Island are classified as moderate. In the waters of Batee Island, there are 31 coral genera. The highest percentage of corals was the genus Acropora (50.02%).Keywords:Batee IslandConditionCoral reefCoral cover

Abstract

The mortality of tinfoil barb during transportation is relatively high due to the oxygen consumption rate and excretion of these fishes. Therefore, the use of an appropriate anesthetic drug becomes one of the solutions for solving this transportation problem of tinfoil barb. One of the natural anesthetic drugs with potential to be studied is Chromolaena odorata leaves. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of anesthetic compounds from Chromolaena odorata leaves in the closed transportation of tinfoil barb. The experimental design used was a non-factorial completely randomized design that consisted of four treatments and three replications,then followed by a Tukey test to see if there was a significant difference. The experimental treatments were A (0 ml/L of leaves filtrate), B (80 ml/L of leaves filtrate), C (90 ml/L of leaves filtrate), and D (100 ml/L of leaves filtrate). The observed parameters were fish behavior towards unconscious condition, onset time, immotilization time, survival rate, and water quality. The results showed that the shortest onset time was obtained from treatment D (100 ml/L leaves filtrate), namely 58 minutes towards unconscious condition, then the longest immotilization time was also shown by treatment D, which was 371 minutes. The highest survival rates were also shown by treatment D which were 94,33% during transportation and 76,33% during culture. Abstract

Changing in photoperiod duration may affects the physiology of nocturnal fish such as Pangasianodon hypophthalmus. A study aims to understand the effects of controlled photoperiod towards survival and growth of P. hypophthalmus has been conducted from June to August 2020. There were 3 treatments applied, namely natural photoperiod, 18 hours dark (18D), and 24 hours dark (24D) with 3 replications in each treatment. The rearing tanks used in this study were 100 L circular plastic tanks.  In 24D treatment, the tanks were placed under dark colored tarp tent continuously.  For the 18D treatment, the tanks were placed under dark tarp tent, but the tent was opened for 6 hours/ day (the tanks were in dark condition for 18 hours/ day), while the control tanks were positioned under natural photoperiod. P. hypophthalmus fingerlings, 6-8 cm TL and   4-5 g BW were used in this study. Thirty fishes were reared in each rearing tank, they were feed with commercial pellets, 2 times/day, at satiation. Fish survival was monitored every day, while samplings for fish growth were conducted weekly for a 8 weeks period. Results indicate that the survival of   fish was 100% in each treatment applied. Fish growth, however, shown differences. The growth of fish reared in 24D and 18D was better than that of the control. By the 9th week,  the fish in 24D was around 70.71g BW with 19.27 cm TL  (daily growth rate 9.35%), while those of the 18D was 69.41 g BW, 18.77 cm TL and 9.29% daily growth rate. The fish reared under natural photoperiod was around 61.95 g BW with 18.19 cm TL and 7.33% of daily growth rate. Data obtained indicate that the application of longer dark is positively improve the growth of P. hypophthalmus.Keywords:Nocturnal FishLight Dark Catfish

Abstract

Data collection system in Fish Landing Base of Dumai was traditionally. Data written manually using books and collected by agents. This fact illustrates the weakness of the catch data collection system that occours. The effect is low data accuracy and requires a longer time in reporting. Data collection system based on technology will facilitate the process and important to do. The purpose of this study was to design a data collection system for fish catches landed at Fish Landing Base of Dumai. The research was conducted in February-June 2020 in Dumai city. The method used observation, interviews and literature review. Data analysis is used the process of analyzing data, literature review, analysis of existing systems, analysis of new systems and system design using data flow diagrams (DFD), entity relationship diagrams (ERD) and HIPO. System design starts from input, output and database design. The data design inputted is fishermen data, fishing gear, fish production and price of day, fish distribution, customer data and data employees. The output data are reports of user data, fishing gear specifications, fish production and fish distribution. The database is structured and presented using a flow chart. A technology-based of catch data collection system designed to improve the efficiency of the presentation of the reports needed for agencies.Keywords:Fish LandingDFDReportAgencies

Abstract

Indonesia is recognized as one of the territories that have the highest reef fish biodiversity in the world. One of the commercially valuable fish in this area is the groupers (locally name "kerapu"). At least 76 grouper species have been reported in Indonesian waters, with three species were categorized into "vulnerable", five species "Data Deficient", and 68 species under the "Least Concern" category based on IUCN classification. The increasing exploitations rate had been reported caused the grouper stocks in Indonesia to decrease and threatened extinction. However, only limited scientific data is available regarding the grouper in Indonesia, including their identification. In most fish landing sites across Indonesia, the groupers are morphologically identified and recorded as "kerapu" to replace their scientific species names. Accurate species identification is essential in designing appropriate and sustainable management of fisheries resources. One of the tools that have been used in fish identification is DNA barcoding. In the last two decades, this molecular method has been applied to identify many fish groups globally, including grouper fish. Abstract

Fishing port scan support fishery resources management by incorporating social-economic activities to improve the local community's welfare; however, it can also negatively impact the environment by increasing waste pollution to the surrounding waters. Kutaraja Fishing Port, Banda Aceh, is one of the active fishing ports that conduct multiple activities, such as industrials, transportations, and domestic activities threatening the environment through the production of pollution such as heavy metals. The purpose of this study is to determine the concentration of heavy metals Zinc (Zn) and Chromium (Cr) and the sediment contamination level in the Kutaraja Fishing Port, Banda Aceh. This research was conducted in February 2021 at the water site of Samudra Kutaraja Fishing Port, Banda Aceh, and sampled sediments using the purposive sampling method. Samples were then analyzed for heavy metal concentration using the Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS) instrument in the laboratory of the Aceh Industrial Research and Standardization Center (BARISTAND). The results showed that the concentration of heavy metal Zn ranged from 15.6507 - 27.2939 mg/kg. The majority of heavy metal Cr concentrations were below the test limit of 0.000, except at station 2, which was 9.1212. Both heavy metal concentrations are still categorized as low contamination criteria and still below the Australian and New Zealand Environment and Conservation Council (ANZECC, 2000) and the Canadian Council of Ministers for the Environment (CCME, 2002). Abstract

The Indonesian government plans to move the capital city from Jakarta to Penajam Paser Utara (PPU) which is the upstream area of Balikpapan Bay, East Kalimantan. There are several activities in the planned new capital city that potentially affect the condition of land and marine ecosystems, including clearing new land for housing and agriculture as well as expanding mining and petroleum areas. Directly or indirectly, these activities could affect the oceanographic conditions of Balikpapan Bay. For this reason, in order to obtain an up-to-date picture of Balikpapan Bay, an oceanographic survey was conducted in early March 2020. In addition, to support the analysis of marine dynamics in these waters and their predictions in the future, numerical simulations of hydrodynamic modeling were also carried out. Oceanographic observations indicate significant water stratification in the area about 20 km from the mouth of the bay. This result is also well illustrated in the hydrodynamic model numerical simulation, where there is a water loop at the confluence between salt and fresh water masses from two rivers 18-20 km from the mouth of Balikpapan Bay.
