Abstract

This study examines the role of Fort Rotterdam as a center of Dutch colonial power and administration in Makassar following the Treaty of Bongaya in 1667. It analyzes the transformation of Fort Ujung Pandang into a colonial administrative center and explains the mechanisms through which the VOC exercised control over South Sulawesi. Using the historical method, the study proceeds through the stages of heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography and draws on a range of historical literature. The findings show that Fort Rotterdam functioned not only as a military stronghold but also as a center of administration, political surveillance, trade monopoly, and colonial social control. Its transformation reflects the Dutch colonial strategy of establishing a centralized and hierarchical system of governance in eastern Indonesia. The study argues that Fort Rotterdam became a symbol of colonial hegemony through the integration of military, political, economic, and bureaucratic power.

Abstract

This article examines the development dynamics of KUD Permata Sawit Maligi in Nagari Maligi, Sasak Ranah Pasisie District, West Pasaman Regency, from 1998 to 2023. The study aims to analyze how the cooperative evolved and the challenges it faced in managing community-based oil palm plantations. The main issues explored include the cooperative’s role in local economic development, its internal management dynamics, and conflicts arising between members and external parties, particularly PT. Permata Hijau Pasaman II. Using a historical method comprising heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography, data were obtained through document analysis, field observations, and interviews with key informants. The findings indicate that KUD Permata Sawit Maligi has significantly contributed to local welfare and conflict resolution but has also experienced internal disputes that affected community trust. The study concludes that the cooperative’s sustainability depends on transparent management, member participation, and effective mediation in community-company relations.

Abstract

The Battle of Tjiater Pass (March 5–7, 1942) was a brief but strategically significant engagement in the Japanese campaign in West Java. This study analyzes the operational strategy employed by Japanese forces and examines how the tactical collapse of Dutch defenses at Tjiater contributed to the Dutch capitulation at Kalidjati. Using the historical method and a qualitative approach, the study draws primarily on Japanese operational records, including Japanese Monograph No. 66 and the official Japanese war history of the Dutch East Indies campaign, together with Dutch and Allied materials. The findings show that Japanese success depended on operational tempo, infiltration and flanking maneuvers, the exploitation of difficult terrain, and coordinated air-ground pressure. The fall of Tjiater and subsequently Lembang undermined the defense of Bandung and accelerated the decision to capitulate, although this decision must be understood within the wider collapse of Allied positions across Java.
