Abstract

This research aim to find out how the Gen Z audience's reception of promotional video content uploaded by Bobacot on the YouTube platform. This research used a qualitative approach with a reception analysis method based on Stuart Hall's encoding/decoding theory. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews with five informants after they watched three Bobacot contents uploaded in April, May, and June 2025. The results showed that audiences gave different meanings to each content. The April content generally received a dominant hegemonic response, where the audience received the message according to the creator's intention. The May content showed a combination of dominant and negotiated hegemonic, while the June content received more negotiated to oppositional hegemonic due to doubts about the authenticity of the review and the relevance of the product. The findings suggested that audience reception of promotional content is influenced by personal experience, perceptions of the influencer, as well as the context of the product being reviewed.

Abstract

The Blitar City General Election Commission (KPU) is an independent institution established to carry out its duties as the organizer of general elections including regional head elections. The KPU plays a crucial role in organizing transparent and fair elections. First-time voters are those exercising their right to vote for the first time. This study was conducted using qualitative methods with a participatory observation approach to determine the communication strategies implemented by the Blitar City KPU to increase first-time voter participation in the 2024 regional head elections. The research was motivated by the still suboptimal public involvement in the regional head elections, especially among first-time voters, based on an evaluation of previous elections. The results of the study indicated that the strategies used by the Blitar City KPU include face-to-face outreach to senior high schools and universities, organizing activities segmented by first-time voters, and utilizing social media. The results of the study provided input regarding specific communication strategies to attract the interest of first-time voters to exercise their right to vote for the first time in political life.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the need to evaluate how far President Joko Widodo’s state addresses reflect the nine priority agendas of Nawacita during the 2014–2019 administration. The main issue lied in the absence of quantitative research specifically measuring the representation of Nawacita agendas in official state communication. The objective of this research was to identify the frequency of Nawacita themes in the President’s speeches and determine which agendas are most prioritized. This study applied Agenda Setting Theory (McCombs & Shaw) using a quantitative content analysis method on six state speech texts (2014–2019). The unit of analysis consisted of words/phrases categorized into nine Nawacita points. The findings reveal that Nawacita 1 (national protection), Nawacita 5 (human development), and Nawacita 7 (economic independence) appear most frequently, highlighting the administration’s focus on national security, human capital, and domestic economy. This research contributes to filling the literature gap, which has mostly employed qualitative approaches, and affirms that state addresses are not merely symbolic rhetoric but also reflections of concrete government policies.

Abstract

This study explores how local political figures in Malang Regency construct Javanese cultural values through political messages on social media, analyzed using Aristotle’s Political Rhetoric framework of ethos, pathos, and logos. The issue is significant given the dynamics of Indonesian digital politics, where cultural symbols increasingly serve as persuasive strategies, especially in communities with strong cultural identities such as the Javanese. Social media has become a key arena for politicians to build legitimacy through cultural representation, though this practice risks reducing cultural meaning into political commodity. Using a qualitative approach, the research applies content analysis to Instagram posts of Aryo Seno Bagaskoro and Rendra Masdrajad Safaat. Data were obtained through online observation and documentation of visual and textual content, then analyzed through reduction, categorization, and interpretation. Findings show that values of andhap asor, rukun, gotong royong, and tepa slira are represented through rhetorical strategies: ethos (moral credibility and politeness), pathos (empathy and emotional closeness), and logos (rational and historical narratives). Yet a shift occurs from substantial ethos to performative ethos, where cultural symbols are instrumentalized to construct political imagery. This study concludes that social media functions as a space of cultural political rhetoric, negotiating tradition and modernity within digital politics.

Abstract

The development of digital technology has influenced the way students build and understand interpersonal relationships, particularly through the use of the instant messaging application WhatsApp. Although high WhatsApp communication intensity is often considered a sign of emotional closeness, it does not always indicate deep emotional involvement. Based on students' experiences and perspectives, this study aims to understand how the intensity of WhatsApp communication shapes students' emotional closeness. This study employs a qualitative method and uses a phenomenological approach as its methodology. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with active students who use WhatsApp as their primary communication tool in daily student life. Research shows that WhatsApp is an important tool for expressing emotions, maintaining interactions, and building relationships with people in situations of physical distance. Communication intensity is defined as the level of emotional involvement, attention, and presence reinforced through quick responses and the use of communication features. However, emotional closeness is highly dependent on the quality of interactions and the context of the relationship, not just the frequency of communication. The study found that WhatsApp communication can effectively build emotional closeness if accompanied by significant emotional engagement.
