Abstract

This research examines the impact of the Fly Swatter Game on seventh-grade students' vocabulary proficiency at SMP Parulian 2 Medan. The research employed a true experimental design, categorising students into an experimental group that participated in the Fly Swatter Game intervention and a control group that received traditional instruction. Both groups took pre-tests and post-tests to assess their vocabulary enhancement. The study's findings indicated that the experimental group demonstrated a significant enhancement in vocabulary knowledge compared to the control group. The average score of the experimental group increased from 58.26 (pre-test) to 77.33 (post-test). The t-test analysis resulted in a t-count of ( 3.144,) which was higher than at the level of significance= 0,05 (1,673) or > 3,144 > 1,673. Ha was accepted, whereas Ho was refused. demonstrating a statistically meaningful impact. The findings indicate that employing the Fly Swatter Game as a vocabulary instruction technique can improve students' engagement, motivation, and retention of new lexicon. The game-based learning methodology enables students to engage actively with vocabulary, enhancing both enjoyment and efficacy in the learning process

Abstract

This study aims to determine whether the Story Mapping Technique can significantly influence the ability to write recount texts at the tenth grade of SMKS Raksana 2 Medan. The Story Mapping Technique used in this study is based on the theory proposed by Li (2007). Using purposive sampling technique, the population of this study consisted of all tenth-grade students at SMKS Raksana 2 Medan, totaling 66 students divided into five classes. The results showed a significant improvement in students' writing ability after the implementation of the Story Mapping Technique. Data analysis using the t-test revealed that the calculated t-value was 2.054, while the t-table value was 1.697 at a significance level of p < 0.05. Since the t-calculated> t-table (2.054>1.697), it was concluded that applying the Story Mapping Technique had a significant effect on students' ability to write recount texts in the tenth grade at SMKS Raksana 2 Medan. Therefore, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted, while the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected. Based on these findings, the Story Mapping Technique is proven to be effective in improving students' ability to write recount texts and can be considered an alternative method for teaching writing at the secondary school level.

Abstract

The concept of positive education has gained considerable attention in global educational discourse, its practical application within teacher training programs particularly in English education departments remains underexplored. This study aim explores the implementation of positive education principle within English teacher education program. The qualitative research approach is used by employing semi-structured interviews to facilitates an in-depth exploration of participants' experiences and perceptions regarding the implementation of positive education principles. A purposive sampling technique was used to select participants who have relevant experiences and are willing to provide rich insights. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings illustrate that the implementation of positive education in the English education program contributes significantly to both the academic and emotional development of students.

Abstract

Narrative text is one of the texts in reading competency based on the school-based Curriculum. In teaching narrative text, teachers need media to make the teaching and learning process go well. One of the suitable teaching media is a module.  This study specifically explored the implementation of Genius Magazine in teaching narrative text. This research aimed in investigating deeply research on how students’ opinions or perceptions were related to the implementation of Genius Magazine, its effectiveness and practicality in teaching narrative text. The researcher used descriptive qualitative method with two research instruments used, they were observation paper and interview guide. The subjects selected in this study were 9th grade students with English teacher who implemented Genius Magazine in English learning in the classroom. The result of this study showed that students welcomed and agreed with the implementation of this magazine as a media to learn narrative text since it presented narrative text equipped with interesting and colorful illustration. The implementation of Genius Magazine was very effective and practical, students were very enthusiastic, the classroom atmosphere was more lively, students were more active in asking and answering teacher questions, interacting with friends or teachers, and their grades also significantly increased.

Abstract

This study evaluated two English coursebooks used in Indonesian junior high schools: English for Nusantara, used at SMPN 4 Cikupa Tangerang, and New Frontiers 1, an international coursebook adopted by SMP IT Laa Tahzan Citra Tangerang. The evaluation focused on the quality of the coursebooks in supporting language learning and teaching, and the integration of critical thinking skills. Using a qualitative descriptive research design with a content analysis, data were drawn from Units 1–3, totaling 54 tasks in English for Nusantara and 94 tasks in New Frontiers 1. Findings show that English for Nusantara aligns well with national curriculum goals and provides localized, culturally relevant content. However, it offers limited teacher support resources, minimal pronunciation coverage, and focuses heavily on lower-order skills, with interpretation and explanation making up 56% of tasks. In contrast, New Frontiers 1 demonstrates stronger communicative and task-based features, comprehensive support materials, and greater integration of critical thinking skills, including evaluation (11%) and combined skills (7%). These results highlight the need for future coursebook development in Indonesia to balance local cultural relevance with critical thinking and 21st century competencies, preparing learners for both national and global communication demands.

Abstract

Gender issue has become a topic of numerous studies in educational field. However, the availability of texbooks that representing gender equality are still limited. Thus urges textbook designers become aware in accomodating gender equality in EFL textbook. To fill this gap, the present study aims to investigate gender equality in Indonesian EFL textbook mandated for Junior High School grade IX. Adopting content analysis as research design, the content of textbook including multimodal texts, verbal and visual texts were analyzed by researcher. Gender neutral vocabularies, a balance proposition male and female vocabularies, the frequency of male’s and female’s visibility throughout images in the textbook were found to construct gender equality represented in the textbook. The finding show that the textbook designers are aware to minimize gender inequality represented in EFL textbook. Finally the implication of present study is English teacher and textbook designers should be fully aware and pay attention more about gender equality depicted in EFL textbook.

Abstract

This study aims to find out how to use role play in teaching speaking in grade V students at Islamic Elementary School Raudhlatus Shibyan. This research used a qualitative approach with a case study type of research. The subjects of the study were English teacher and grade V students who participated in speaking learning activities using the role play method. The researcher collected data through three main instruments, namely interviews with English teachers, observation of the learning process in the classroom, and documentation in the form of teaching notes, photographs and student learning outcomes. After the data from interviews, observations, and documentation were collected, the researcher performed three main steps in analyzing them. First, data reduction was carried out, namely sorting out the information that had been collected through the results of teacher interviews, then selecting important parts related to the focus of the research. Second, data presentation is carried out, namely compiling important points of the data that have been selected earlier, so that the flow can be seen clearly. Finally, make a conclusion. With these steps, researchers can conclude that role play can indeed help students speak more boldly and be more active in learning English. The findings showed that role play is applied in three stages of learning: preparation, implementation, and evaluation.

Abstract

This study explores how students perceive and use grammar to improve their English Speaking abilities. Using a qualitative narrative approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews and participatory observation. Thematic analysis shows that a solid understanding of grammar helps students form clear sentences, maintain consistent tenses, ensure coherence, and increase their confidence in speaking. However, grammar alone does not guarantee fluency, as students face challenges such as limited processing time, spontaneous speech without considering structure, and interference from their native language. The study also highlights the importance of a supportive learning environment, the integration of technology, and quality instruction in effectively applying grammar in speaking contexts. These findings emphasize the need for a more contextual, communicative, and supportive educational approach to help students meaningfully use grammar for enhancing their speaking skills.

Abstract

This study investigates the implementation of Digital Game-Based Learning (DGBL) as a creative solution to reduce learning boredom at Yos Sudarso Metro High School. It explored the impact of game-based tools on student engagement, motivation, and understanding during the learning process. This research employed a qualitative method, with data collected through classroom observations and Google Forms questionnaires. The data were analyzed using Qualitative Thematic Analysis to identify recurring patterns in students’ experiences. The findings indicated three main themes, namely increased student engagement, perceived effectiveness of digital game platforms, and challenges in implementation. Platforms such as Quizizz and Wordwall encourage interactive and enjoyable learning, leading to improved comprehension, particularly in English subjects. This qualitative study involved 32 eleventh-grade students selected through purposive sampling, with data collected through classroom observations and a structured questionnaire.  However, limitations such as unequal access to technology and inconsistency in tool effectiveness remain obstacles. The study concludes that DGBL is a promising approach to minimize learning boredom and fostering a more dynamic, student-centered learning environment. These results suggest that integrating game-based tools into classroom instruction can enhance participation and learning outcomes, provided that implementation challenges are addressed with proper planning and resources

Abstract

The mastery of speaking micro-skills, particularly grammatical accuracy, is essential for students in Islamic boarding schools to achieve effective communication. However, traditional approaches often lack interactive learning support. This study evaluates the effectiveness of poster media in improving students’ speaking proficiency through the Monday Talk Program at ITTC Darussalam Gontor. A quasi-experimental non-equivalent control group design was implemented, with participants selected through purposive sampling based on similar proficiency levels and the availability of intact classes. The experimental group received poster-based instruction, while the control group used mind mapping. Pre-test and post-test scores were collected to measure learning gains. The results show a significant improvement (p = 0.000) in the experimental group, indicating that poster media effectively enhance grammatical accuracy in speaking. These findings suggest that integrating visual media into structured speaking programs supports more engaging and effective learning. In conclusion, poster media represent a valuable instructional tool for strengthening students’ grammatical proficiency in Islamic boarding school contexts.
