Abstract

This study aims to describe how the avail of Artificial Intelligence-based ChatGPT as an amorphous speaking partner helps alleviate students’ speaking anxiety. By employing a classroom action research (CAR) method, this study involved 42 students in an English Department class in a private university in Malang. The participants were 32 female students and 10 male students in a Basic English-Speaking class. The researchers employed purposive sampling and chose those forty-two students as the research subjects as they indicated speaking anxiety. The procedure of this research included one cycle of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The findings portrayed that the use of chatting through voice in ChatGPT was a great success in alleviating students’ speaking anxiety. The success was reflected on the leap of students’ speaking performance after the utilization of artificial intelligence-based speaking partner. The observation carried out during this study supported the finding as the majority of the students were indicated as more active and confident in performing speaking attempts through ChatGPT compared to when they were required to speak to their peers. Also, the interview with students confirmed that they did not feel pressure when they spoke with ChatGPT as much as when they faced real humans. Thus, the utilization of AI-based ChatGPT voice feature is advised to be used to reduce speaking anxiety in other contexts and subjects.

Abstract

The integration of Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) into educational practices has gained attention as an effective approach for enhancing language learning outcomes. This study investigates the impact of MALL on student engagement and motivation among vocational high school students in Metro City, Lampung, Indonesia. Using a qualitative case study method, data were collected through semi-structured interviews and classroom observations involving three purposively selected participants. This suggests the value of MALL, which, in achieving fun and interactive elements, promotes engagement and betterment of grammar and vocabulary. However, identified limitations in the internet connection remained, with little effect on speaking fluency. According to the research, viewed through the lens of Self-Determination Theory (SDT) as an analytical framework, one of the main advantages of MALL is the way it meets students' psychological needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness. The implications suggest the necessity of integrating speaking activities into MALL tools, improving digital infrastructure, and customizing MALL applications for vocational education. This research contributes to the growing body of knowledge on technology-enhanced language learning, emphasizing its potential in specialized educational contexts.

Abstract

The TED Talks Application is an application that features talks on Technology, Education, Design, and various other topics, delivered by experts and professionals from around the world. This study aims to determine whether the TED Talks Application affects students’ vocabulary mastery. This research used an experimental quantitative method involving two classes of tenth-grade students at SMAS GKPI Padang Bulan, Indonesia. Using a purposive sampling technique, the sample consisted of 26 students in the experimental group and 26 students in the control group. Both groups received pre-tests and post-tests to measure vocabulary improvement. The average pre-test score in the experimental group was 40.76, while the post-test average was 57.76. The control group’s pre-test average was 40.38, and the post-test average was 50. Statistical analysis showed Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected, with a t-count of 2.677 greater than the t-table of 2.010. These results indicate that the TED Talks Application has a positive effect on students’ vocabulary mastery, although the effect size was relatively small. The findings suggest that while TED Talks are not ideal as the primary vocabulary tool, they remain useful as a supplementary resource. Further research is recommended to explore additional multimedia tools that may better enhance vocabulary learning outcomes.
