Abstract

This study aimed to research an experimental research in teaching English listening material using English film for the Eleventh grade students of SMK Full Day Bustanul Ulum, The design English Teaching Material to improve the listening skill’s students in SMK Full Day Bustanul Ulum. The research in this study is designing English teaching material using English film to increase students’ listening skill. In this context of the research the researcher designed the listening material in the vocational high school especially in SMK Full Day Bustanul Ulum by focused on quantitative data of Experimental reseach. The data in this research were taken with a round of the object study. The steps of the study are pre and posttests, plan, implementation and questionnaires. The data were analyzed as the teaching materials for designing listening teaching materials that relevant with the vocational school. And then, the syllabus was designed based on the curriculum 2013.

Abstract

English Day is one of the development programs and language training conducted in one of the Islamic boarding schools in Jember with the intention of achieving maximal learning English speaking, especially in achieving the ability to speak English fluently. For this reason, this qualitative research is aimed to provide a rich, contextualized picture of English Language Day in one of the Islamic Boarding School in Jember, Indonesia (according to Denzin & Lincoln, Schwandt on Donna M. M and John A.M, 2004:95). By employing observation, documentation, and interview the data showed that although English Day is a good method for students to practice their English ability, some students still show inadequacy to speak English fluently.

Abstract

This study is categorized as Educational Research and Development (RnD). The employment was purposed to embody the appropriate instructional media to teach English vocabulary for Intermediate students’ level of Yoko‟s English course, Ambulu. The research product named Gumiho snake and Ladder game. That was designed based on the competence of Yoko‟s English Course, the finding data gathered through need analysis and Contextual Teaching Learning (CTL). Concerning to these, a set of procedures proposed by Borg and Gall are being applied in this study. The research instruments used to collect the data consisted of Course, Focused Group Discussion (FGD), interview, questionnaires, observation sheet and checklist validation forms. Expert validation was carried out to evaluate the game developed for the product betterment. Moreover, to know the applicability of the materials and students‟ responses, the real try-out phase on some selected chapters during the research period had been conducted. For the reasons, the Snake and Ladder game as a instructional media for Yoko’s program students is ready to be applied in teaching learning activity.

Abstract

This research was purposed to found and explained the kinds of imagery in three poetries by Edgar Allan Poe. All of content poetry is true story of Edgar Allan Poe’s life. The poetry that was taken by researchers are “To My Mother, Serenade, and Spirits of the Dead”. The researcher analyzed seven types of imagery as follows: visual imagery, auditory imagery, olfactory imagery, gustatory imagery, tactile imagery, organic imagery, and kinesthetic imagery. The method was regarded qualitative as research design. The researcher used documentation technique in collecting the data. Analysis data in this research implied content analysis approach. The result of this research showed forty-seven imageries in the three poetries of Edgar Allan Poe. The imagery found as follows;23 visual, 4 auditory, 2 olfactory, 2 tactile, and 16 organics. The researcher found five types of imagery in three poetries, but the visual imagery is very dominant raised of each poetry.

Abstract

Analyzing textbooks is one way that we know the extent to which the quality of the textbooks that we use in the learning system and also have an important role for the teacher and student learning as a reference and to assist student learning. The researcher conducted this study to find out what grammatical cohesion is and analyze it in narrative text based on the education curriculum. The result of this study revealed that the grammatical cohesion in Indonesia EFL has been widely used in most text. Moreover, the finding showed that reiteration appeared to be the most frequent type of all subcategories of grammatical cohesion. There are 309 grammatical cohesion ties in four narrative texts: references 175 times (56,64%), conjunction 63 times (20,39%), ellipses 41 times (13,27%), and substitution 30 times (9,70%). It can be concluded that the narrative texts analyzed in this research contain several grammatical cohesions and those are compatible as language inputs.

Abstract

Sorogan is a teaching method by facing the teacher one by one by bringing the book to be studied. This sorogan method is the most difficult method of the entire education system in pesantren. Because this system requires patience, diligence, obedience, and personal discipline from students. This research aims to adapt Arabic language teaching to English and explain the successful application of the Sorogan method in Arabic. The general focus of this research is to study/examine the nature or structure of experience in human consciousness using a qualitative methodology that applies subjectivity and interpersonal skills in the exploratory research process. The results of the research can be concluded that when the researcher was explaining how to teach using the Sorogan method. Students will focus on translation only, and the teacher will focus on finding errors in the words the students read. And the teacher will explain the meaning of the material when he finds sentences that need to be explained. And sometimes the teacher will ask about the form of a word, phrase or sentence which the teacher knows he has explained.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine students' perceptions of the English Development Program on students' speaking skills. English Development Program is a program established to help students learn English better, especially in terms of speaking. The subjects of this study were 4 students from Pesantren Nuris who participated in the English Development Program selected by pursosive sampling. This research uses qualitative methods, and the research instrument uses interviews. The interview results show that the majority of students have a positive perception of the English Development Program. The students believe that the English program can support them to speak English fluently. Students also have the perception that the English program is a place for students to develop their English skills, especially in terms of speaking. Not only that, students also think that the English program can make them more confident in speaking English.

Abstract

Test of English Foreign Language (TOEFL) is widely used as a measurement for standardized English competencies. This study attempted to explore EFL learners' difficulties in dealing question of reading section in TOEFL test. Qualitative case study research design and semi-structured interview as instrument to gain the data. In this study with four participants were purposively selected from the English Education Department of Private University of Jember who has passed the TOEFL test. The findings revealed that there were two factors that become difficulties or obstacle faced by the TOEFL test-takers in completing TOEFL reading questions. First, the factor that is caused from several kind of questions that are difficult to answer for the participants, including; unstated detail question, implied detail question, and vocabulary in context question. Second, the factor that is caused by each participant personally, including ; lack of mastering vocabulary, limitation of time, and unfamiliar vocabularies. The result of this study are expected to have practical contribution on determining the appropriate strategies employed to minimize students' error during answering the TOEFL test.

Abstract

Technology, content, and pedagogy must have a meaningful relationship with each other so that Pre-service English Teachers' literacy can be connected to a variety of semiotic modes beyond written language. Interaction with a greater variety of texts in a variety of modes, media, and environments highlights the need for tools to assess English language instructors' TPACK when it comes to educating students in multimodal literacy. Several pre-service English teachers in EFL classes utilize the use of word wall media for learning. This research aims to identify the obstacles faced by pre-service teachers in utilizing TPACK to teach EFL English at a private university in East Java, Indonesia. By adapting the interview framework (Creswell, 2018), which consists of four discussion targets, including pre-service teachers' beliefs regarding the practice of using TPACK, which is applied in learning activities in junior high schools. This narrative qualitative method (Clandinin & Connelly, 2000) uses semi-structured interviews as its instrument. Systematically using Widodo's (2014) thematic analysis to analyze qualitative data. The findings show that there are many obstacles faced by pre-service teachers and students in implementing learning using TPACK in EFL classes, to be effective for their future teachers, pre-service skills.

Abstract

This research aims to find a correlation between vocabulary mastery and speaking skill among English education students at Tidar University. This research used quantitative research which used correlational design. The sample of the students in this research was twenty-three students in the fifth semester of English Department taken randomly using cluster random sampling from all the population. The data of the research were collected by a quiz for the vocabulary mastery test and take the data from the previous semester's debate with the students.
