Abstract

Waste management in traditional markets, such as Porsea Market in Toba Regency, North Sumatra, faces complex challenges due to high trading activities that generate organic and inorganic waste. If not managed properly, waste can have a negative impact on the environment, public health, and visitor comfort. The purpose of this service is to analyze the system and government policies in waste management in Porsea Market and implement a management program that involves various parties, including the local government, market managers, traders, and local communities. The method used is a participatory approach with stages of problem identification, socialization, program implementation, and monitoring and evaluation. The program included the provision of segregated waste bins, increased frequency of waste collection, and the formation of a market cleaning team. The results showed that the program succeeded in increasing community awareness in sorting waste, reducing piles of waste in the market area, and creating a cleaner and more comfortable market environment.

Abstract

Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) have an important contribution to supporting regional economic growth, including in the Porsea Market area, Toba Regency. However, MSMEs are faced with various challenges, such as limited access to capital, low adoption of digital technology, lack of managerial skills, and dynamic changes in consumer preferences. As a form of real contribution to local economic empowerment, this community service activity is carried out to increase the capacity of MSME actors through a series of training, counseling, and mentoring programs focused on innovation strategies and business adaptation in facing market competition. This activity includes education on product development, social media-based digital marketing, business financial management, and the use of simple technology that supports operational efficiency. The results of the activities show an increase in the understanding and skills of business actors in managing their businesses more professionally and adaptively, including in the application of product innovation, the use of digital platforms for promotion, and more orderly financial records. In addition, the formation of a collaborative network between MSME players is an added value that strengthens the local business ecosystem. This activity is expected to be a sustainable effort to improve the competitiveness of MSMEs in the era of increasingly complex market competition

Abstract

To increase community awareness of the importance of environmental sustainability through reforestation activities, specifically planting 150 red shoot seedlings (Syzygium oleana). This activity involves various parties, including students, the Village Head, village officials, and the local community, who work together in implementing the program using the participatory observation method. This method allows students to be directly involved in the process of identifying strategic planting locations, preparing seedlings, and implementing planting in mutual cooperation. The results of this program show an increase in awareness and concern for the surrounding environment. The active participation of the community in the process of planting and maintaining the plants reflects a positive change in their attitude towards green space preservation. In addition to providing aesthetic benefits by beautifying the village, the presence of red shoot trees also contributes to improving air quality, reducing pollution, and creating a more beautiful and comfortable environment for the community. This program proves that students can contribute significantly to environmental conservation and sustainable development. Through the synergy between academics and the community, this activity is not only a means of environmental education but also has a long-term impact in maintaining the balance of the ecosystem in the village. With this kind of initiative, it is hoped that the community will continue to develop ecological awareness and continue reforestation efforts for future generations.

Abstract

Road signage is one of the most important efforts in improving accessibility and navigation systems in an area, especially in rural areas that often do not have a clear road naming system. Parparean IV Village, Porsea Sub-district, Toba Regency, has an adequate road network with many small roads and alleys that are interconnected. However, the lack of street signage in this village causes difficulties in orientation and location finding, both for local communities and visiting migrants. To overcome these problems, this street signage program was implemented as part of HKBP Nommensen University Medan's Community Service and Practice Course (KPPM). This program aims to create a more structured street naming system to improve ease of access for the community and support the smooth running of social and economic activities. With clear and standardized street signage, it is hoped that connectivity between areas in Parparean IV Village will improve, so that various sectors, including trade, education and public services, can be further developed. In addition to providing practical benefits, the program also contributes to raising community awareness of the importance of road naming systems as part of village infrastructure development. The success of this program can serve as an example for other villages facing similar problems, as well as a first step in creating a more organized geographic information system to support sustainable village development.

Abstract

The Student Service Practice Lecture (KPPM) activity aims to increase student empathy and concern for others. Each service group team is required to carry out a work program that benefits the village. Making trash cans is one of the work programs carried out by KPPM students. The purpose of this work program activity is to increase the awareness of the Parparean IV village community of the importance of protecting the environment and provide education to the village community not to litter and know the negative effects and dangers of waste on health, through the making of pilot bamboo bins and waste decomposition educational media boards. In addition, the purpose of this activity is to optimize public awareness to dispose of waste in the bins provided, and it is hoped that the community can also take advantage of existing natural resources to make their bins. The method of activities carried out consists of 3 stages, namely the planning stage in the form of licensing, the implementation stage in the form of making bins and educational media boards, and the final stage in the form of distributing bins. After the pilot bins were completed, the service team conducted limited socialization in several residents' homes, without holding formal events or large meetings. This socialization was carried out informally while interacting with residents, to convey information about the importance of cleanliness and waste management.
