Abstract

Reading comprehension refers to getting meaning from what we have read from written information. Teaching reading comprehension is different from teaching reading. In reading comprehension, the readers do not read the text but also have to comprehend the reading passage. The educators use teaching and learning strategies but in teaching activities, they are confused about choosing an appropriate strategy for their students. Consequently, the students still feel bored, inactive, uninterested, and difficult to read passages. Therefore, the teachers have to create a better learning environment and be more creative and effective by using various strategies in teaching and learning activities because using appropriate strategies in the teaching and learning process will help the students reach better comprehension and also easier to reach learning purposes.

Abstract

Indonesia has already used the communicative language teaching (CLT) approach for more than two decades, and research from that time reveals its challenges. This paper aims to synthesize past research to address challenges and constraints in CLT implementation and then suggest ways to tackle the mentioned challenges and constraints. The comprehensive framework from Fadilah (2018) was used to identify four broad categories of challenges. This helped us classify challenges by source and then to solve them. The finding of this study by analyzing Indonesian CLT implantation research is that the challenges of CLT can be divided into four frameworks: a) societal classroom constraints include teacher beliefs, teacher beliefs vs students’ preferences, and teachers' workload; b) socioeconomic constraints include class size, grammar-based syllabus, the low of students’ participation, unequal educational recourses c) cultural constraints include, local norms, students anxiety, and embarrassment; d) ideological constraints include English as a foreign language. Further, this paper concludes that these challenges are interconnected and require a systematic approach, with government intervention as a potential first step. This paper offers research-based practical and theoretical recommendations to develop the CLT practice in a specific context.

The stages used in this development model are only one stage, namely the prototyping phase which doubles as a validity test. The research instrument used was a self-evaluation and validity sheet which self-evaluation analyzes the conformity of the product with the criteria of authentic assessment, reading comprehension, and blended learning. Based on the validator's evaluation, the results of the validity of the authentic assessment product were obtained at 83.8% reading comprehension with a very valid category. It means that the authentic assessment for reading comprehension in Blended learning on narrative text and analytical exposition text material at SMA N 12 Padang is stated to be valid and can be used by teachers and students.
