Abstract

This study aims to examine the representation of sexual violence against women in Dian Purnomo’s novel *Perempuan yang Menangis Kepada Bulan Hitam* through Sara Mills’ critical discourse analysis approach. The study focuses on the positions of the subject, the object, and the reader in constructing the reality of the sexual violence experienced by the main character, Magi. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method with data collection techniques consisting of a literature review. The research data consists of quotations from the novel related to sexual violence, the marginalization of women, and forms of resistance by female characters. Data analysis was conducted through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results indicate that the subject position portrays Magi as a woman who possesses the awareness and courage to reject the practice of forced marriage and to fight for her right to her body and dignity. The object position reveals that Magi experiences marginalization due to the dominance of patriarchal culture, which positions women as powerless over their own lives. The reader’s position is shaped to foster empathy and critical awareness of the victim’s suffering, thereby guiding readers to critique cultural practices that harm women. This study contributes to strengthening the critical feminist discourse analysis framework of Sara Mills and provides insights into the representation of sexual violence and patriarchal culture in contemporary Indonesian literature

Abstract

This study aims to explore the representation of local wisdom and cultural identity in undergraduate students’ creative poetry practices within the Sanggar Sastra (Literary Studio) course. Employing a qualitative descriptive-analytical design, data were collected through documentation of student-authored poems, in-depth semi-structured interviews, and participatory classroom observations. Data analysis followed an interactive process of reduction, thematic display, and conclusion drawing, with a specific focus on cultural symbols, ecological imagery, and embedded socio-moral values. The findings reveal that local wisdom is robustly articulated through indigenous kinship terminology, nature-based metaphors, and community-oriented ethical injunctions. Students’ cultural identity emerges through deliberate lexical choices, geocultural positioning, and critical negotiations between traditional values and contemporary modernity. The creative process unfolds across four pedagogically scaffolded stages: experiential exploration, aesthetic processing, value reflection, and collaborative revision. Beyond textual production, this practice significantly enhances students’ creative expression, reflective thinking, and cultural awareness. The Sanggar Sastra course thus functions as an integrative pedagogical space that simultaneously develops cognitive, affective, and creative competencies. The study concludes that practice-based literary pedagogy effectively strengthens cultural literacy and reinforces local identity amid globalizing educational landscapes. These findings offer valuable theoretical and practical contributions to culturally responsive language and literature education, providing a replicable framework for integrating indigenous knowledge systems into higher education curricula and fostering ethically grounded, culturally resilient graduates.

Abstract

This study examines how character education values are constructed and challenged in Chairul Harun’s novel Warisan. While traditional literary analyses often treat cultural and moral frameworks as fixed guidelines, this research explores how such values are actively contested and renegotiated within the narrative. Using the complete text of Warisan as the primary data source, the analysis follows a hermeneutic-deconstructive four-stage process—identifying explicit moral themes, mapping narrative tensions, deconstructing binary oppositions, and synthesizing cultural negotiations—to examine how this Minangkabau regional novel uniquely portrays inheritance and identity as fluid rather than fixed. The findings reveal two main points: first, culturally respected values are frequently used to justify personal or group interests rather than reflecting genuine communal ethics; second, the narrative emphasizes an ongoing negotiation between individual agency and cultural expectations, with characters ultimately prioritizing moral and spiritual legacies over material wealth. By demonstrating that ethical meaning in literature is dynamic rather than absolute, the study challenges traditional, lesson-based approaches to character education. It recommends that literary instruction should focus on developing students’ critical literacy and ethical independence. Ultimately, this research contributes to Indonesian literary scholarship by providing a clear analytical framework that connects cultural interpretation with critical reading, while offering actionable insights for teaching character education through regional fiction
