Abstract

Reading is one of the skills which must be taught to Junior High School students as one of the teaching and learning activities in English class. Reading determines the successful of any subject matters. All depend on the competence of reading comprehension. But in reality, the students argue that reading is not interesting and they are still wrong to understand meaning of the text. They have difficulties in analysis, interpretation and make summary of the text. The students’ need something produced some observation to make them more active and stimulate their interest in order to create an enjoyable atmosphere of English reading activity so that they can build up their reading comprehension particularly to their understanding the content of texts given. The writer uses the interesting strategy to make the students enjoy and more active in the class it is DRTA strategy it can improve the reading comprehension of the students. The objective of the research was to find out whether or not the use of DRTA strategy able to improve the reading comprehension of the seventh grade students of SMPN 5 Parepare. The researcher applied quasi-experimental method, with two groups namely experimental and control class. The sample of class VII1 was 17 students and class VII4 was 13 students, therefore the total number of sample was 30 students. The result of the data analysis showed that there was significant difference of the students reading comprehension before and after teaching using DRTA. The researcher concluded that the use DRTA is effective in improving the reading comprehension of seventh grade students of SMPN 5Parepare. It is proved by the result of the statistical analysis by using application SPSS with applying t-test calculation where the significant value of pre-test (2.311) was lower than the level of significant (2.048) and post-test (2.716) was higher that the level of significant (2.048). Those indicated that H1 was accepted and H0 was rejected. It means that DRTA can improve the reading comprehension of the seventh grade students of SMPN 5 Parepare.

Abstract

This research was conducted to obtain the Perception of the use of VLOG in learning process in English Education Study Program at Universitas Muhammadiyah Parepare. This research also conducted to obtain the effects caused by VLOG as a new platform to practice speaking based on their perception. This study uses Qualitative Descriptive by design conducted with students. The population of this study is English Department of Universitas Muhammadiyah Parepare. The participant of this study consist of eight participants. In addition, the researcher conducted interview with 2 Vlogger as a proven of the effect of VLOG based on their personal experiences. The result of this study showed that VLOG is needed in language learning as a media for students to practice speaking in an interesting way. Students assumed that VLOG can help them especially in pronouncing word and decrease their anxiety. Nonetheless, it was undeniable that there are several stdents who are not suitable to use VLOG to practice speaking. Furthermore, VLOG has several advantages and disadvantages if applied in learning process.

Abstract

Reading comprehension is the most important part of reading ability. However, comprehension in reading cannot be achieved, because students cannot understand the reading material well. In addition, many students find it difficult to understand English texts and are lazy to look for appropriate strategies to collaborate their reading comprehension due to limited access in the neighborhood. This becomes part of the concentration of researchers to carry out this research, when making observations at SMK Negeri 3 Parepare, found the results of students' reading comprehension is still in a fairly problematic condition. The researcher adapted the One stays rest stray strategy as a solution to the lack of students' reading comprehension. In this case, the purpose of this study was to determine whether the one stays rest stray strategy could improve reading comprehension of tenth years students of SMK Negeri 3 Parepare. Researchers used a quasi-experimental method, with the design of two groups of initial and final tests. The research sample consisted of 40 students from two classes as a total population. The results of data analysis showed that students' reading comprehension improved significantly. This is indicated by the average score of the initial test is 37.90 and the final test is 73.85. This shows that the one stays rest stray strategy can be used to improve the reading skills of eighth grade students. After analyzing the data using the t test formula, the results of the t test value at the final test are 5,295. This shows that H1 is accepted and H0 is rejected, and students taught through the one stays rest stray strategy have better improvement than students taught through the self directed learning strategy.

Abstract

This research was based on the students’ problem regarding the English teaching, especially in speaking in the classroom. Which is the teacher was more active rather than students in learning process. Therefore, the objective of this research is to find out whether or not the speaking ability improves to the seventh-grade students of SMP Negeri 9 Parepare before and after given taught by implementing think-pair-shar as strategy. This researcher applied quasi-experimental design, with two group pre-test and post-test design. The population of this research was seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 9 Parepare. Total number of population was 112 students and was taken as sample by using cluster random sampling technique, class VII.1 as experimental class and class VII.4 as control class. the number of each class was 63 students. The material in this research were about descriptive text to know the student’s ability in the application of think-pair-share as strategy in teaching speaking. The researcher reveals that there is significant difference between experimental class and control class, that indicated from the mean score of the experimental class is 53,56 in pre-test to 70,90 in post-test, while that of the control class is 46,19 in pre-test to 61,25 in post-test. It is concluded that speaking ability can improve by implemented of think-pair-share.

Abstract

The objective of the research is to find out whether or not the use of Cooperative Integrated Reading Composition (CIRC) method able to improve the students’ reading comprehension of the eighth grade students at SMP Negeri 4 Parepare The researcher applied quasi-experimental method, with two classess pretest and posttest design. The sample analysis consisted of 40 students from two classes. In the sampling process was taken cluster random sampling and this sample of this research took VIII.8 as experimental class with 20 students and VIII.7 as control class. The students given treatment with material about narrative text. The data were collected by using reading test. In experimental class through Cooperative Integrated Reading Composition (CIRC) method and control class through Discussion Conventional Method. The result of the data analysis showed that Cooperative Integrated Reading Composition (CIRC) method can improved the reading comprehension significantly. It was proved by the mean score on pretest was 55 and the posttest was 79. In addition, after analyzing the data by using the test formula, the result of t-test value is 2.654 and t-table value 1,685. It means that the t-test value was greater than t-table value (1.685). It indicated that H1 was accepted and H0 was rejected. Therefore, the hypothesis of the research is reading comprehension of the eighth year students at SMP Negeri 4 Parepare who are taught through Cooperative Integrated Reading Composition method is better than the students who are taught through Discussion Conventional Method

Abstract

Reading comprehension is the ability in understand the meaning of the text that is read. When doing a observation at SMK Negeri 3 Parepare, the researcher found that the student’s reading ability is still low. It was caused by the effect of less technique in teaching, for this reason the students confuse how to get specific information from the reading text easily. Then, the researcher hopes through Two Stay Two Stray Technique able to improve the students reading comprehension. Therefore, the objective of this research is to find out whether or not the use of Two Stay Two Stray Technique is able to improve the reading comprehension of the eleventh grade students of SMK Negeri 3 Parepare. This research used quasi-experimental method with two classes pre-test and post-test design. The population was the eleventh grade students of SMK Negeri 3 Parepare. The sample analysis consisted of 40 students from two classes taken from population of the eleventh grade students of SMK Negeri 3 Parepare. The result of the data analysis showed that Two Stay Two Stray Technique can improve the reading comprehension of the eleventh grade students of SMK Negeri 3 Parepare significantly. It was proved by the mean score of the pre-test was (52.00) and the post-test was (74.75). After analyzing the data by using SPSS. 21.0,the probably value in post-test was (0.00) is lower than the significance value (α) = (0.05). those indicated that H1 was accepted and H 0 was rejected. From this data, the researcher can concluded that by applying Two Stay Two Stray Technique to improve reading comprehension of the eleventh grade students of SMK Negeri 3 Parepare.

Abstract

Vocabulary is one components of language. Vocabulary is one of the most important things to make our communication be fluent. One of component that links the listening, speaking, reading is vocabulary.. The objective of the research is to find out whether or not the use of riddle can improve the vocabulary of the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 3 Parepare. The research applied quasi-experimental method with two classes, experimental class and control class. The population of this research was the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 3 Parepare in academic year 2017/2018. The total number of population were 278 students and two classes of nine classes taken as sample by using cluster random sampling. The total number instrument of the pre-test and post-test of this research were 20 number which divide into 10 match the words, 5 multiple choice and 5 fill in the blank. The result of data analysis shows that the students vocabulary improved. It was showed by the mean score of pre-test was 6,5 and post-test 85.83. it shows that the use mind mapping can improve the students vocabulary of the seventh grade of SMP Negeri 3 Parepare.. After analyzing the data by using the test formula, the result of t-test value in post-test was 0,665 and t-table value was 2.000. It means that t-test value 0,665 was higher than t-table value 2.000. Those indicates that H₀ was rejected and H₁ was accepted and the students who were taught by using riddle is better than the students who were taught by using text book.

Abstract

Speaking is one way to communicate in which ideas and thought delivered through message orally. To enable students to communicate, we need to apply the language in real communication. Personality plays an important role to improve speaking ability. The characteristic of people which causes consistency of feeling, thinking, and behavior. One aspect that constructs personality is extrovert-introvert. The purpose of this study is to generally try to find out which one of the Extrovert and Introvert students that have the better speaking achievement and to Investigate whether there is a difference between the Extrovert and Introvert students personality in speaking achievement in eighth grade at SMP Negeri 10 Parepare. The method used in this research is quantitative research and Two-Way Analysis of Variance. This research involved only one class of eight grade students in SMP Negeri Parepare. All of the samples are 32 students. This research was done in august in the new semester of the first-grade students in the academic year 2018/2019. In this study, the researcher used a questionnaire to know between extrovert and introvert students. This research is started by collecting theory after that giving the students personality tests to the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 10 Parepare and then classifying the extrovert student and introvert student. Then, after classifying students' personalities, the researcher gave students' speaking scores to design comparing the personality of the two students with their speaking scores. The speaking score of extroverted students was 75.92, on average, where the average introverted student was 71.67. This means that the null hypothesis (H0) is accepted. It can be assumed that there is no significant difference between extroverted and introverted students on the speaking achievement of students, but extroverted students have higher English competency skills because of their natural willingness to speak than introverted students. Sometimes introverted students can match extroverted students with their unique strengths.

Abstract

Picture is kind of interesting visual aid which is able to give motivation and good impression for the students, so that the students can memorize the words related to the picture. Because of that, it is important to find out the solution to enhance students’ vocabulary. The objective of the research are to find out whether the use of picture series is able to enhance the vocabulary of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 3 Parepare. This research used quasi-experimental design with two groups namely pre-test and post-test. The population of this research were the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 3 Parepare Gasal semester in Academic 2018/2019 with sample taking technique which was clustering random sampling consisted of 54 students from two classes taken from the eighth grade population, where class VIII.7 was an experimental class and VIII.9 as a control class. The results showed that the learning process using picture series could improve students' vocabulary skills, based on the results of research in chapter IV it was known that the average score of learning outcomes before applied picture series of a pre-test (66.70) of the standard score of DEPDIKNAS 2015 with Learning outcomes category is in the low category. After applying picture series, the researcher obtained the results of the average score of students in the post-test, namely (86.62). Based on data analysis through the test formula shows the final t-test (3,632) is higher than the value of t-table (2,000). This showed that H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted, students who are taught to use picture series are more effective than conventional way.

Abstract

This research explores the idea of using an already existing language learning app, Duolingo, to students at SMPN 8 parepare. These types of apps use adaptive learning technologies, which are able to tailor the tasks to the level of each student. In the case of this research, Duolingo was used as part of the media of studies in teaching EFL. The students used the app online, either in its android phone or IOS phone. The purpose of this research is to find out the use of Duolingo Gamification is able to influence the EFL students in learning EFL or not and to analyze the significant difference between the EFL learner’s mastery in English language before and after being taught by using Duolingo Gamification. The researcher applied quasi-experimental method, with two group pre-test and post-test design. The samples of this research consisted of 42 students from two classes taken from the population of the eight grade students of SMPN 8 Parepare. Preliminary results shows that Duolingo Gamification is an easy-to-use app that is useful and has potential, although its main lessons are not based on communicative competence. It is enjoy learning process and can motivate the students because of several elements, such as the accessibility on a mobile device, its Gamification aspect, and the variety of tasks. The results of data analysis showed that there was significant difference between the EFL learner mastery in English language before and after being taught by using Duolingo Gamification. This is indicated by the mean score of the pre-test is 35.85 and the post-test is 66.42. The results of the data show the t-test value in the post-test is 5.751 and the t-table value is 2.021. The data shows that H1 is accepted and H0 is rejected and students who are taught through Gamification Duolingo media are better than students who are taught through the Picture media.
