Abstract

This article examines the andung tradition in Batak Toba culture as an expression of faith, grief, and hope from the perspective of Catholic theology through a literature-based approach. Andung is understood not merely as an emotional lament over death, but as a medium of symbolic communication that embodies spiritual, theological, ecological, and social values in the life of the Batak Toba community. In addition to mourning the loss of loved ones, andung also expresses lament over environmental destruction, such as deforestation, river pollution, the degradation of the Lake Toba ecosystem, and the loss of soil fertility, all of which are understood as consequences of human greed and irresponsibility. In this context, andung becomes a moral call to ecological conversion and the restoration of harmonious relationships between humanity and all of creation. This tradition serves to affirm the dignity of life, strengthen communal solidarity, and provide a space for reconciliation and emotional healing in experiences of grief, including ecological grief. This study shows that andung has a strong correspondence of faith with Catholic spirituality concerning death, eschatological hope, ecological responsibility, and respect for the dignity of both humanity and nature. Through an analysis of theological sources and cultural studies, it is found that andung represents a form of inculturation of faith that reflects the relationship between culture and Christian faith within a pastoral context. Andung affirms that grief is not the end of life, but part of the journey toward the fullness of life in Christ and a calling to care for and restore creation. This study contributes to the development of inculturative theology and enriches the understanding of the faithful in interpreting grief as a spirituality of hope and ecological conversion.

Abstract

Family harmony constitutes a fundamental foundation for the life of the Church and society. However, contemporary Christian families are increasingly confronted with social, economic, cultural, and relational challenges that threaten marital unity and stability. In this context, Ephesians 5:22–33 is often interpreted in a normative or literalistic manner, which may generate tension when applied to modern family realities. This article aims to examine the concept of Christian family harmony from a theological-pastoral perspective based on Ephesians 5:22–33 and to reflect on its relevance for contemporary Christian family life. Employing a library research method, this study applies a theological-pastoral approach through biblical text analysis and critical dialogue with theological and pastoral family literature. The findings indicate that Paul’s teaching on the relationship between husband and wife is not intended to legitimize hierarchical or oppressive relations, but rather to call for mutual love, self-giving, and responsibility rooted in the relationship between Christ and the Church. This perspective affirms that Christian family harmony is fostered through the recognition of equal dignity, dialogical communication, and a spirituality of love responsive to contemporary contexts. Therefore, Ephesians 5:22–33 remains a relevant theological-pastoral foundation for nurturing harmonious Christian families amid the challenges of the modern era.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of using interactive instructional videos on students’ learning outcomes in Catholic Religious Education at the junior secondary school level. The research employed a quantitative approach with an explanatory design and involved 88 seventh-grade students at SMPK St. Yoseph Freinademetz Kapan, East Nusa Tenggara, selected using a saturated sampling technique. Data were collected through a learning outcomes test and a questionnaire on the use of interactive instructional videos, and were analyzed using simple linear regression. The results indicate that the use of interactive instructional videos has a positive and significant effect on students’ learning outcomes (t = 35.319; p < 0.05). These findings suggest that the integration of interactive video media contributes to increased student engagement and improved understanding of Catholic Religious Education content. This study underscores the importance of utilizing digital media in religious education as a contextual and meaningful pedagogical strategy and provides practical implications for teachers in developing technology-based learning.

Abstract

The Church carries out its mission through five fundamental dimensions: koinonia (communion), diakonia (service), liturgia (worship), kerygma (proclamation), and martyria (witness). Among these, martyria occupies a central role as the witness of faith in Christ in the world. This article aims to analyze the theological meaning of the testimony of John the Baptist in John 1:19–28 and its relevance as a paradigm of the Church’s martyria in the contemporary context. The study employs a qualitative method based on a literature review, using a biblical-theological analytical approach to the text of the Gospel of John. The findings indicate that John’s testimony is characterized by an authentic confession of faith, Christological humility, and a total orientation toward Christ as the center of proclamation. These characteristics affirm that the Church’s martyria is not self-centered but focused on the presence of Christ, made visible through a lived witness and authentic proclamation within the context of the contemporary world. Therefore, the testimony of John can serve as a model for the Church in carrying out its mission of martyria today.

Abstract

This article aims to present perspectives on interreligious dialogue as a work of the Church’s ministry. In this view, interreligious dialogue is placed within the framework of the meaning and function of the Church’s presence in the world—namely, to serve humanity—not only within the Christian community but in its unity and wholeness, body and soul, heart and conscience, mind and will. In other words, the Church does not exist for itself but to build and serve the Kingdom of God, which has already begun in this world. Through dialogue, the Church concretely realizes itself in the history of humankind and radiates its identity as a vocation of the Holy Spirit that becomes a sign for the world. Through various dialogical efforts at all levels, the Church increasingly makes itself a sign and instrument of solidarity among religious communities in facing the challenges of our time—such as injustice, poverty, economic inequality, environmental damage, and moral degradation.
