Abstract

The phenomenon of the “like” on social media has shifted from a mere expression of appreciation to a powerful symbol of social validation. In today’s digital culture, “likes” often become a benchmark for self-worth and recognition, leading to a hidden form of self-worship. This study aims to examine the “like” as a digital idol in light of the theological teachings in the Caritas in Veritate encyclical. Using a qualitative method with theological and psychosocial approaches, this research analyzes how dependence on digital validation affects personal identity, social relationships, and spiritual life. The findings show that the “like” culture produces psychological issues such as anxiety, depression, and digital narcissism, and also contributes to the erosion of social and moral values. Self-worship in the digital realm undermines human relationships and weakens one’s spiritual calling as the image of God. Within the framework of Caritas in Veritate, it is revealed that true human development can only occur through truth and love, not through superficial digital recognition. The study concludes that critical reflection, ethical digital education, and the restoration of authentic relationships with God, self, and others are needed to transform the digital culture into a medium of love, rather than a platform for self-idolatry.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the theological meaning of the nggua ceremony, a traditional death ritual practiced by the Liti Pumbu tribe in East Manggarai, and its relevance to Catholic eschatological teachings. Employing a qualitative-descriptive approach and ethnographic method, the research explores the local community’s understanding of life after death and the symbolic meanings embedded in the nggua ritual. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation involving customary leaders and community members. The findings reveal that nggua is understood as a sacred transition of the soul toward eternal life and as an expression of communal faith in salvation and union with God and the ancestors. The ritual centers on pau (customary prayers) and the offering of sacrificial animals, symbolizing hope for heavenly peace and divine light. Although the community does not articulate the concept of eschatology in formal theological terms, they demonstrate a deep spiritual awareness of eternal life. Supporting factors for the preservation of this ritual include the transmission of ancestral values and strong spiritual convictions, while hindering factors involve the low engagement of younger generations and the influence of modernization. This study highlights the importance of inculturating the Catholic faith in local contexts and calls for pastoral and educational strategies that bridge the gap between doctrine and cultural expressions of belief.

Data was collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation. The results of the study indicate that the understanding and experience of young Catholic regarding the Stations of the Cross Service vary significantlyl Some participants were able to interpret the symbols and events of each station reflectively and relevant to their life experiences, meanwhile others participated in the service as a routine without deep understanding. These findings also indicate that the values of love and sacrifice contemplated in the service are beginning to be integrated into daily life, although their application is not yet consistent. This research emphasizes the importance of contextual and participatory pastoral care so that the Stations of the Cross Service can be a means of faith formation for young people.

Abstract

This article examines the example of the holiness of Mary, the mother of Jesus, as a paradigm in the formation of the faith and morals of contemporary Christian women. The background of this study departs from the reality of the decline in moral and spiritual values experienced by many Christian women amidst the currents of modernity, secularism, and the crisis of religious identity. This phenomenon is reflected in the weakening of faith commitment, a decline in moral integrity, and a shift in life orientation from spiritual values to material and individualistic interests. In this context, the discussion focuses on how the example of Mary's holiness can be implemented concretely in the formation of the faith and morals of contemporary women, namely through obedience to God's will, faithfulness in prayer, and the experience of love in social relationships and daily life responsibilities. The main objective of this study is to explore and actualize the values of Marian holiness, such as obedience, humility, purity, and loyalty so that they can become a concrete inspiration for Christian women in living a life based on faith. The method used in this study is a qualitative approach with theological-biblical analysis and literature study of various sources of Scripture and Church documents. The results of this study illustrate that Marian spirituality has transformative value in shaping the character of Christian women who are spiritually strong and morally upright. In conclusion, Mary's exemplary life is not only historical and symbolic, but also actual and contextual, serving as a life paradigm for Christian women in facing the challenges of faith and ethics in the modern era.

Abstract

The word wisdom is a complex word. It is said so because the word has both profane and sacred dimensions. Based on that, wisdom also has various contexts. Therefore, this article aims to explore the meaning of wisdom in a Christian perspective through a critical review of the Holy Scriptures (Biblical Theology), Christian Tradition, and spirituality. Additionally, this article also aims to examine the urgency of wisdom in the Christian perspective in the context of pastoral life based on pastoral facts. This article uses qualitative research methods. The data presentation technique employs a descriptive-analytical approach. The research found that, in the Old Testament, wisdom is centered on God (theocentric). In the New Testament, wisdom is centered on Christ (Christocentric). And in the tradition of the early church community, wisdom is Christocentric-Ecclesiocentric. Wisdom is then developed through spiritual movements and becomes part of virtuous actions or deeds. Ultimately, wisdom is greatly needed in the pastoral context.

Abstract

The crisis of relativism, post-truth, and the weak rationality of faith among the young generation of Catholics in Indonesia, especially in the Kupang Archdiocese, demands a new approach in Catholic religious education. This article offers a revitalization of scholastic philosophy, particularly the dialectical method of Saint Thomas Aquinas, as a framework for culturally and spiritually relevant, contextually grounded catechesis. This study employs a qualitative literature review approach, drawing on scholastic traditions, Church documents, and national Catholic religious education policies. The results of the study show that the scholastic method—with a quaestio–obiectio–responsio–ad obiecta pattern—can be inculcated in religious learning in formal schools through critical dialogue, faith reflection, and the use of local cultural symbols. The main contribution of this article is the offer of a scholastic–contextual integrative model that unites the intellectual tradition of the Church with contemporary pedagogical needs. The implications of this research include the need to train PAK teachers as reflective catechists, so that the scholastic tradition is not only a historical heritage, but also a living tradition that forms a reasoned faith.

Abstract

This study aims to examine Jesus' public life from a multicultural perspective and his contribution to ministry to people with disabilities in Rantebua, North Toraja. Multiculturalism is not only understood as a recognition of religious and cultural diversity, but also as an appreciation for the diversity of human life, including that of people with disabilities. People with disabilities are often viewed as second-class citizens due to their abnormal conditions. In the Rantebua context, people with disabilities are often overlooked in community services and within the church. Therefore, a theological study is needed to educate the community so that people with disabilities receive care and fair treatment. This study used a qualitative method with a library research approach through a review of literature on public theology and multiculturalism. The results show that Jesus' public life demonstrated an open attitude toward all people, including people with disabilities, by restoring their physical and spiritual dignity. As the Church in Rantebua, the Loko' congregation needs to emulate Jesus' compassionate attitude in providing equal service, respecting, and embracing people with disabilities. The church must be the body of Christ and a community of people with disabilities.

Abstract

The rise of interreligious prejudice in Indonesia is an alarming phenomenon, evident in the intensification of social polarization, the spread of identity-based conflicts, and the decline of constructive communication among religious communities. This situation often hinders efforts to build truthful narratives and substantive dialogue, as they are obstructed by deeply rooted stereotypes and prejudices. This study analyzes the urgency of an epistemological transformation from prejudice toward authentic dialogue as a concrete embodiment of a dynamic and transformative Christian faith, with a particular focus on the narrative of John 1:35–51. By employing a literature-based methodology and descriptive analysis, this research demonstrates how encounters with Christ provide a strong epistemological and spiritual foundation for overcoming prejudice while fostering meaningful interreligious dialogue. Dialogue in this perspective is not understood as doctrinal relativism but as a praxis grounded in truth, agape love, and mutual recognition. This study specifically examines the application of the principle “come and see” as a methodology for cultivating tolerance in response to the complexities of today’s socio-cultural challenges. By integrating theological reflection with the pluralistic reality of Indonesia, this article offers a new perspective on the contribution of Christians in a plural society, particularly their role as facilitators of dialogue amid a social climate saturated with prejudice. The findings of this research are expected to make a significant contribution to the development of more effective, constructive, and transformative models of interreligious dialogue.
