Abstract

Literature is the result of the human creative and imaginative process which contains various values and life lessons. Namun, as an important element in literary works, describes the struggle within a character that arises as a result of the conflict between desires, beliefs and hopes. In literary works that are adapted into films, namun not only plays a role in building character, but also drives the storyline emotionally. The film Kite Putus, which is adapted from the novel by Mommy ASF, depicts the emotional journey of Kinan, a woman who faces the infidelity of her husband, Aris. The namun experienced by Kinan is the main focus in the narrative, where he has to choose between maintaining the household for the sake of his child or letting go of the relationship that has hurt his self-esteem. The aim of creating this film script is to explore how namun can be applied effectively in character and story development. The author focuses on processing Kinan's namun through internal monologues and interactions with other characters, as well as utilizing cinematic elements to strengthen the emotional dimension of the film. With this approach, it is hoped that the film Kite Putus will be able to provide an in-depth experience for the audience, as well as representing universal issues in everyday life.

Abstract

Film is an audio-visual media consisting of pieces of images put together, and has the ability to capture social and cultural reality, of course films are able to convey the messages contained therein (Alfathoni & Mahesah, 2020:2). The film Pengabdi Satan by Joko Anwar is a remake of the classic Indonesian film with the same title, which was released in 1980. The story centers on the Suwono family who live in an old and remote house. This family consists of Rini, mother, father, and Rini's younger brothers—Tony, Bondi, and Ian. One of the important elements that makes films have this impact is the visual storytelling technique which allows the audience to grasp the emotional and symbolic meaning of the story intuitively, without having to rely on words. The film Pengabdi Satan is a strong example of the use of visual storytelling and character exploration as the main elements in building a horror atmosphere and driving the narrative. In this film, visual storytelling is the main tool to create atmosphere and build tension slowly. Joko Anwar utilizes spatial layout, lighting and image composition to convey the sense of isolation, fear and helplessness experienced by the characters.

Abstract

The animated film "Puss in Boots : the Last Wist" is one of the most successful animated films in 2022, this is thanks to the presence of the antagonist, Death, which is the main attraction in this film. The visuals displayed by the antagonist character design have a deep meaning, making it an object of research that can inspire and provide insights related to character creation. The purpose of the research is to analyze the visual meaning of attributes, character types, and gestures as well as the process of creating the main antagonist character "Death" in the animated film "Puss in Boots: the Last Wish". This research uses a descriptive method that will be described by using the manga matrix theory developed by Hiroyoshi Tsukamoto to design new characters with 3 main variables, namely matrix form, matrix costume, and matrix personality. The results of this study show that character creation requires a long process such as determining the basic role and concept of the character, then analyzing references taken from history, myths and folklore related to the character. This element is very important because it will be the beginning of the visual design of the character which is then strengthened by visual depictions through the design of clothes, attributes and weapons used, as well as the giving of personality to the character that makes it more lively. In conclusion, the creation of a character not only requires attractive character visuals, but also covers various aspects that are not few, to produce iconic characters and are liked by the audience.
