Abstract

Teaching English is one of the mandatory subjects at junior and senior high school levels in Indonesia. However, the practice of teaching English subjects in elementary schools has not been implemented uniformly. English is taught as a local subject in some schools, although in others it is a compulsory subject. As happened in the Dukuh Genjeng area, Karakan Village, Weru District, Sukoharjo Regency, Central Java. Many elementary schools in the regions have not implemented English as a compulsory subject, so this has an impact on the knowledge, understanding and motivation of elementary school children to learn English.  This service activity aims to provide English literacy education and motivation to learn English to participants in service activities at Rumah Baca Mutiara Hati who are local elementary school students using the Flashcard method which is packaged with a fun game and involving one native speaker who speaks English as an introduction to interactive interaction. directly with the International Community. The method in this training is the delivery of material by two service providers who explain the first service provider's English vocabulary material and the application of Flashcards by the second service provider together with a Native Speaker. From this service activity, it was found that participants increased their knowledge of English Vocabulary and their motivation to learn more about English. Furthermore, participants also felt they had better self-confidence when interacting with the international community, such as interacting with natives who took part in this service activity, where participants were not embarrassed to ask questions and provide responses when communicating with natives who were part of the international community.

Abstract

This study applied experimental research with a quantitative approach to investigate the effectiveness of graphic organizer (GO) to enhance reading comprehension of EFL learners with good and poor reading habits. The study involved EFL learners from Duta Bangsa University in Indonesia. The samples were taken from two classes, the first was control group and the second was experimental group. Data collection in this study was conducted by using tests (including pre-tests and post-tests). The analysis of statistics was aimed to determine the mean, frequency, total score, standard deviation, and percentage. The pre-test values for the experimental group with good reading habits and poor reading habits were 55.17 and 43.41 respectively, while the post-test values for the experimental group with good reading habit were 79.88 and 61.23 for the poor reading habit. The average scores revealed that the experimental group, taught by using the GO strategy, outperformed the control group which received conventional way. Thus, it could be concluded that the GOs strategy significantly improved students' reading comprehension. This was evidenced by the experimental group's average score of 75.64 compared to the control group's average score of 62.44. The mean value of the experimental group was higher than that of the control group, and the t-test value was 4.241, with a 2-tailed significance of 0.001. This suggests that the GO strategy can be effectively integrated into teaching reading instruction of EFL learners to accelerate their reading comprehension.

Abstract

This study discusses representative speech acts in digital comic discourse created by Mohammed Arif Vakil and Mohammed Ali Vakil reflecting the religious moderation among societies. The comic discourse campaigns for the importance of tolerance between human beings. The analysis focuses on the reflection of religious moderation in one chapter entitled ‘Ethic’ which describes the relation among human beings. The chapter is chosen due to its message which focuses on relation among people. The data of this research were obtained from the whole texts and pictures in the chapter. The texts in the comic became the main data whereas the images were put as secondary data. These data were then processed and classified into several speech act classifications proposed by Searle. The result shows that the most dominant speech act performed by the comic maker is representative speech acts. Meanwhile the directive speech acts are commonly used to give the direct moral lessons. The chapter reflects religious moderation in three points i.e. (1) applying good attitudes to others; (2) reflecting the moral value; (3) helping others without hurting the feelings by applying the representative and directive speech acts to convey the religious moderation. The representative speech acts function as the utterances of giving statement and admitting about something related with good deeds and never hurting others while the directive speech acts functions as the utterances of requesting, asking, and recommending certain things. The directive speech acts take the roles as the directive meanings on moral values.

Abstract

Death as a literary theme has long served as a reflection on life, existence, and cultural values. This study investigates how social traditions legitimize inherited violence in Shirley Jackson's The Lottery, arguing that the story represents death not as a natural or inevitable occurrence, but as a culturally sanctioned and ideologically constructed event. Employing a qualitative content analysis grounded in structuralist and deconstructive theory, the research examines how meaning is produced through recurring symbols—the black box, stones, and ritual—revealing the mechanisms by which violence becomes normalized within communal structures. By integrating structuralist attention to narrative systems with deconstruction’s critique of fixed meaning, this study contributes to literary scholarship by demonstrating how Jackson’s story functions as a critique of social complicity and ritualized violence. Theoretically, the paper advances discussions on the intersection of ideology, tradition, and power in literary representations of death, offering insights into how fiction can expose the constructed nature of social norms and the ethical consequences of collective obedience.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze speech acts in the context of sociolinguistic aspects with a focus on language interaction. Speech act is a form of verbal expression that has social impact and pragmatic meaning in daily human communication. This research focuses on the types and factors in speech acts that exist in the two male and female leads in the movie entitled To All The Boys: Always and Forever. Through a sociolinguistic and descriptive qualitative approach, this research explores the relationship between speech acts and social dynamics in various communication situations. This research method involves collecting data from the speech acts in the scripts of the movie. The data were then analyzed qualitatively by considering the speech act framework as well as concepts in sociolinguistic theory. The analysis shows that speech acts play an important role in representing gender norms in society. Language choices, speaking styles, and the types of speech acts used can differ based on gender, reflecting the social construction of gender roles. However, this cannot be a stereotype in everyday social life to categorize gender. Therefore, the author adds the aspect of types and factors behind the purpose of a conversation between men and women.

Abstract

Conversational implicature was proposed by Grice (1989) into four maxims. Those are: 1) quantity maxim, 2) quality maxim, 3) relation maxim, and 4) manner maxim. It is affects in the communication in society. It is also occurred in the communicative impairment. One of the phenomena is on the schizophrenia which affect on the deficit pragmatic and the ability to comprehend the implied meaning. The data of this research is from the representative utterances from John Nash which deals with something the speaker believes. The reason in specify the data is due to the limitation of this research in order to get more details about the pattern of the implicature in the believe of schizophrenic character. The data is classified into the classification by Searle and Vanderveken which is concentrated in the representative speech act before analysing it in implicature. The theory by Grice about the four maxims is used in this research to know about the conversational implicature by the main character who is diagnosed with schizophrenia. The results shows that most dominant flouting maxim is on the relation maxim. 13 chosen data which deals with the floating maxim shows the result as follows: 3 data in quantity maxim; 1 datum in quality maxim; 6 data in relation maxim; and 3 data in manner maxim. In flouted quantity maxim utterances do not deliver well in the conversation due to schizophrenia. It deals with the ability from speaker to have in line in the topic. The flouting maxim in quantity maxim and manner maxim has the same percentage. From flouting quantity maxim, Nash does over utterance in delivering the message so that the hearers do not understand what Nash mean. The flouted manner maxim indicates the inability of the speaker in delivering in a good manner and has a sufficient meaning in the utterance. While the fluted quality maxim does not affect to the conversation.

Abstract

This community service program was motivated by the low effectiveness of conventional environmental education methods, as well as the limited English literacy and digital technology utilization among members of the Forum Anak Kelurahan Sriwedari. The children were not yet accustomed to using English in thematic contexts such as environmental issues, even though this ability is essential for broadening their global awareness. The purpose of this program was to develop an innovative learning medium in the form of an English-language digital comic with an environmental theme, designed to enhance both English proficiency and ecological literacy among children. The program employed a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach, emphasizing active participant involvement throughout all stages—from planning to evaluation. The results showed a significant improvement in environmental vocabulary mastery (from 58 to 84), the ability to construct simple sentences (from 60 to 82), and the confidence to use English in communicative contexts (from 55 to 83). The children also demonstrated higher learning motivation and greater awareness of environmentally friendly behavior. In conclusion, the introduction of English-language digital comics proved effective as a creative learning medium that integrates English language acquisition with Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), fostering the development of globally minded and ecologically conscious young learners.
