Abstract

Sexual violence against adolescent girls is a global issue with high prevalence and diverse forms. In Palu City, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, this problem is critical. This study assesses the impact of educational interventions using animated videos on adolescent girls' knowledge of sexual violence based on Law No. 12 of 2022. A pre-experimental, pretest-posttest one-group design was conducted from May 7-15, 2024, with 50 class X students from SMAN 5 Palu selected through stratified random sampling. The intervention was animated video counseling, and the outcome was knowledge of sexual violence. Data were collected via questionnaires and analyzed using the Wilcoxon test at a 95% confidence level. Before the intervention, 80% of respondents had insufficient knowledge about sexual violence. Post-intervention, 74% had good knowledge, with only 4% remaining insufficient. The Wilcoxon test confirmed the intervention's effectiveness (Z = -6.125, p < 0.000). The study demonstrates the efficacy of animated video education in enhancing understanding of sexual violence among adolescent girls. The improvement in knowledge supports using audiovisual media in educational interventions for sensitive topics. Animated video educational interventions significantly improve knowledge of sexual violence among adolescent girls and should be widely implemented in schools. Future research should use larger samples and qualitative methods to explore the intervention's impact further.

Abstract

Anemia is a health problem that can occur in all age groups from toddlers to old age. Young women are susceptible to suffering from anemia because they experience a menstrual cycle every month. This study aims to determine the influence of age, menstrual pattern, nutritional adequacy rate (energy adequacy rate and protein adequacy rate), and nutritional status on the incidence of anemia in female students at Sidoarjo Islamic Middle School. The design of this research is observational analytic with a cross sectional approach. The population was female students at Sidoarjo Islamic Middle School with a sample size of 53 people. The independent variables in this study were age, menstrual pattern, nutritional adequacy rate (energy adequacy rate and protein adequacy rate), and nutritional status; and dependent variable is anemia. Data collection was carried out by checking Hb and Hct levels, measuring body weight and height, and filling out questionnaires. The collected data was analyzed using path analysis using smart Partial Least Square (PLS). There is a significant effect of protein adequacy on hemoglobin (Hb) levels. Female students with adequate protein intake tend to have better Hb levels, which play a role in preventing anemia. Therefore, meeting optimal protein needs is very important to support blood health and prevent health problems in female students.

Abstract

Uncertainty about newborn care can lead to stress and inadequate coping mechanisms in mothers of low-birth-weight (LBW) infants. This study aimed to assess mothers' knowledge of LBW infant care and its relationship with coping mechanisms. The study variables included maternal knowledge of LBW care and coping strategies. The study used a descriptive correlational design, with 90 mothers of LBW infants selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using a questionnaire consisting of three sections: Coping Strategies Scale, the Maternal Knowledge Score, and demographic information. Statistical analysis was performed descriptively and inferentially using Pearson's correlation test. The results showed significant differences in LBW-care knowledge (p=0.02) and coping strategies (p=0.003). A significant correlation was found between maternal knowledge and coping strategies (r=0.242, p<0.015). This conclusion indicates that mothers with greater knowledge have better coping mechanisms. It is recommended that nurses provide proactive and engaging learning opportunities in health education programs on infant care to enhance the confidence and coping strategies of mothers with LBW infants..

Abstract

This study investigated the impact of complementary cupping therapy on immunity changes, specifically interleukin-10 (IL-10) levels, in coastal fishermen with hypertension. Forty participants, aged 20-50 years, were randomly allocated to either a cupping therapy intervention group or a placebo group. Blood pressure, pulse rate, and IL-10 levels were measured before and two weeks after the intervention. The cupping therapy procedure followed a six-step protocol, including informed consent, equipment preparation, point selection, scarification, and post-treatment care. Data were analyzed using paired and independent t-tests. The results showed a significant increase in IL-10 levels (P=0.049) and a significant decrease in systolic and diastolic blood pressure (P<0.05) in the hypertension group receiving cupping therapy. In contrast, no significant changes were observed in the normotensive group. The findings suggest that wet cupping therapy may enhance the immune system by increasing IL-10 levels and lowering blood pressure in hypertensive coastal fishermen. The underlying mechanisms may involve local inflammation, activation of the complement system, increased nitric oxide production, and stimulation of the autonomic nervous system. However, the limited sample size and potential methodological limitations warrant further high-quality trials to confirm these results. The study concludes that wet cupping therapy could serve as a viable complementary treatment for hypertension in fishing communities, but a comprehensive approach considering cultural, religious, and psychological perspectives is necessary to understand its full impact on individuals and society.

Abstract

The prevalence of dental caries among children in Indonesia is alarmingly high, with 84% of children aged 5 to 12 years experiencing dental problems. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a dental health education intervention in enhancing toothbrushing independence among school students in Banda Aceh. A quasi-experimental design with pre-test and post-test assessments was employed, involving 87 students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using an observation form and analyzed using univariate analysis and the Wilcoxon test. The results revealed that before the intervention, 58.6% of respondents were partially independent in tooth brushing, while only 21.8% were entirely independent. After the intervention, the number of independent children increased by 94.7%, and the non-independent category decreased by 35.3%. The Wilcoxon test showed a statistically significant difference in tooth brushing independence before and after the intervention (Z=-3.55, p=0.0004). The findings highlight the importance of practical education in equipping children with the necessary skills to maintain oral health. Developing a comprehensive Dental Care Nursing Service Model integrating innovative educational methods and involving parents and teachers is recommended to foster sustainable, healthy habits among school students in Banda Aceh.

Abstract

Vancomycin possesses not only a narrow therapeutic range but also nephrotoxic effects, thus requiring intensive monitoring. This study aims to analyze the vancomycin use among the inpatients of a referral in Indonesia. This retrospective cross-sectional research collected a two-year data from medical records. The research involved all the patients who met the inclusion criteria. The majority of the 90 patients receiving vancomycin were men with the most age range of 18-60 years. The dominant indication of vancomycin use was sepsis typically caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Staphylococcus haemolyticus. Meanwhile, the vancomycin dosing for the 1-<18 age range was mostly based on actual body weight, whereas that for other age categories took into account renal function. The effectiveness of vancomycin based on White Blood Cells and neutrophils was shown in 34.88% of patients examined for both parameters. In addition, 6.25% of the patients given a platelet count experienced suspected vancomycin-induced thrombocytopenia. No incidence of vancomycin-induced neutropenia and nephrotoxicity was found. Given that the risk of nephrotoxicity and the effectiveness of vancomycin are influenced by the steady-state concentrations and the area under the curve, this study recommends hospitals in Indonesia to provide Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (TDM) services.
