Abstract

This study aims to analyze the levels of work stress experienced by volunteers at the Persadabumi Buddhist organization in Medan, Indonesia. Volunteer work in religious organizations, while spiritually rewarding, can also be a source of psychological stress due to various organizational and individual factors. Using a quantitative descriptive approach, this research distributed a validated questionnaire to 36 active volunteers at Persadabumi Medan. The instrument consisted of 18 items measuring various dimensions of work stress including workload, time pressure, role conflict, work climate, and supervisory quality. Data analysis employed frequency distribution and stress level categorization. The results showed that 52.8% of respondents experienced low levels of work stress, 47.2% experienced moderate levels, and none experienced high levels of stress. Key stress-inducing factors identified included heavy and demanding workloads, time pressures in completing tasks, inadequate supervisory support, interpersonal conflicts, and unfavorable organizational climate. The study interprets these findings through a Buddhist psychological framework, explaining stress as a manifestation of dukkha arising from tanhā (craving) and avijjā (ignorance). Buddhist teachings on mindfulness practice (sati), the middle way (majjhima paṭipadā), right effort (sammā-vāyāma), and the importance of spiritual companionship (kalyāṇa-mitta) provide practical frameworks for stress management in volunteer contexts. The practical implications emphasize the importance of organizations providing emotionally and spiritually supportive environments, implementing balanced workload distribution, establishing realistic schedules, facilitating meditation and mindfulness practices, and strengthening social support networks among volunteers. This research contributes to understanding the intersection of organizational psychology and Buddhist philosophy in managing volunteer well-being.

Abstract

The Dhammapada, a revered Buddhist scripture, is structured in the form of gathas, which are poetic teachings rich in noble values and inspiration for self-development. The beautiful language within the Dhammapada frequently employs lexemes and metaphorical sentences that possess a high degree of vagueness. This vagueness necessitates a literal semantic analysis of meaning so that the text can effectively serve as a guide for ethical and spiritual conduct, as well as a tool for teaching morality, meditation, and wisdom. Semantic studies, which analyze the meaning of lexemes or sentences, are still rarely found within Buddhism. However, semantic studies are crucial for a deep understanding of Buddhist teachings, bridging the gap between literal and philosophical interpretations, and providing a foundation for teaching Dhamma relevant to the modern era. This research utilizes a descriptive method with a literature review approach. The results of the semantic study on the figurative meanings within the Dhammapada indicate that a right view (samma ditthi) regarding unwholesome and wholesome actions can be achieved through mind control, management of the six senses, and eradication of mental defilements (kilesa).

Abstract

Buddhism is a religion that aims to bring happiness to all living beings through mutual respect, acceptance, celebrating differences, and living peacefully. Of course, this kind of thing is in accordance with multicultural education, one of the aims of which is to develop the ability to recognize, accept, appreciate and celebrate cultural diversity. This qualitative research using literature studies analyzes the significance of multicultural education values in Buddhist teachings. The data analysis technique uses content analysis by sorting things according to the focus and objectives of the research. This research produces the following three conclusions. First, Buddhism teaches tolerance so that its followers can listen to the teachings of other religions with full awareness as stated in "samaggā sakhilā hotha", meaning "let each other be in harmony and do good. Second, Buddhism teaches its followers to behave democratically, which was directly exemplified by the Buddha when making a decision for the Kalama people. Third, Buddhism teaches peace and always avoids all forms of conflict, hostility and fighting because those who can realize this truth will immediately end fighting.

Abstract

In this increasingly advanced digital era, social media has become an integral part of the lives of young people, including university students. Social media is not only used for communication and entertainment but is also being utilized as a learning tool, including in a religious context. This study aims to explore the impact of social media use on the understanding of Buddhist teachings among students at the Raden Wijaya State Buddhist College (STABN). The approach used was quantitative, employing a survey method involving students who actively use social media. The main theories employed are Uses and Gratifications, which emphasizes that media users actively choose media to fulfill specific needs, and the theory of social media construction, which views reality as being shaped through digital interactions. This study found that the intensity and habit of social media use are related to the level of understanding of Buddhist teachings. Students who more frequently use social media to seek religious information tend to demonstrate a better understanding of Dhamma values. However, the type of religious content consumed does not always have a direct impact on deeper understanding. These results indicate that social media has the potential to be a positive tool for religious education if used wisely.

Abstract

This study examines the social and religious roles of a Manggalīa within the Buddhist community, with a case study in Dusun Ngadisari, Tempuran Village, Kaloran District, Temanggung Regency, Central Java. The Manggalīa is a local religious figure who serves as both an elder and leader of the community in various religious rituals such as weddings, funerals, patidāna, and traditional ceremonies including gendurenan, nyadran kubur, and village selametan. In Buddhist communities without a pandita, the Manggalīa plays a central role as a spiritual guide and preserver of local traditions. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach using observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation methods. The selection of a Manggalīa is conducted through communal deliberation, based on spiritual and ritual competence, particularly in the aspects of sīla, samādhi, and paññā. The findings show that the Manggalīa in Dusun Ngadisari fulfills his role with great dedication, both in guiding the community's spiritual life and participating in social matters such as conflict mediation, community empowerment, and maintaining social harmony among villagers.

In the advancement of information technology and technology in the modern era, it certainly has a considerable impact on various areas of life, including in the spread of religious teachings, one of which is Buddhism. The method of delivering the Dhamma today does not only use traditional approaches such as lectures or Dhammadesana in monasteries or live teachings, but now it can be through digital media such as Youtube, social media, applications, or online videos. This article reviews how technology plays an important role as a tool that can reach more people around the world without being limited by space and time. Through the various uses of these technological developments, the teachings of the Dhamma are presented in a more interesting, interactive, and easily accessible form for all groups, such as audio-visuals, digital books, podcasts, and application-based online classes. Abstract

Handaka Vijjananda's Buddhist comic "Aṅgulimāla: True Repentance" depicts the repentance of a ruthless murderer who undergoes spiritual transformation after meeting Gautama Buddha. This story not only conveys Buddhist moral teachings but also reflects the social, cultural, and religious dynamics of ancient Indian society. This study aims to analyze the intrinsic and genetic structures of the Buddhist comic "Aṅgulimāla" using Lucien Goldmann's genetic structuralism approach. The method used is qualitative descriptive, with the primary data source being the comic "Aṅgulimāla." Data collection techniques were conducted through intensive reading and note-taking, while data analysis was conducted by linking the intrinsic elements of the literary work with the socio-historical context and the author's worldview. The results show that the intrinsic structure of the comic "Aṅgulimāla" includes themes of repentance, karma, loving-kindness (metta), and wisdom; strong characters and characterizations; a progressive plot; internal and external conflicts; and a time, place, and social setting that reflect 6th-century BCE Indian society. Meanwhile, its genetic structure reveals human facts such as the caste system, power relations, and social morality, as well as the author's worldview, which emphasizes Buddhist values such as compassion, self-transformation, and hope for human moral change. Thus, genetic structuralism analysis confirms that the comic Aṅgulimāla is a literary work that is not only narrative in nature but also reflects social realities and humanitarian messages relevant to modern life.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the extent to which the attendance of students at the Virya Dharma Buddhist Sunday School contributes to an increase in their understanding of Buddhist teachings through the practice of puja facilities. Using a descriptive qualitative approach and supported by statistical attendance data, this study involved 15 students aged 1–17 years as respondents. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation of activities. The results showed that students with high attendance rates tended to have a better understanding of the basic Buddhist values of puja facilities. Regular attendance also strengthened students' spiritual experiences through active involvement in puja, which encouraged the appreciation and application of Buddhist teachings in daily life. Thus, student attendance in Sunday school activities is not merely administrative, but becomes an important element in the formation of Buddhist character and spirituality from an early age.

Abstract

This study explores the role of Vihara Buddhagaya Watugong as a center for the revival of Buddhism in post-independence Indonesia. The main objective is to understand how this vihara contributed to the revitalization of Buddhism through historical, cultural, and spiritual lenses. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, involving archival research, in-depth interviews, architectural observation, and oral history. Findings reveal that Vihara Buddhagaya Watugong serves multiple functions as a place of worship, cultural hub, and interfaith dialogue platform. Its architectural features, such as the Avalokitesvara Pagoda and other sacred elements, illustrate a fusion of Buddhist values and local wisdom. The vihara actively engages in education, tradition preservation, and the strengthening of Buddhist religious identity within a multicultural society. These results suggest that the revival of Buddhism in Indonesia is not solely a spiritual phenomenon but also contributes to the national narrative of cultural identity and social harmony. Thus, Vihara Buddhagaya Watugong stands as a significant symbol of religious revitalization, cultural heritage, and social cohesion in modern Indonesia.

Abstract

This study examines the implementation of the Sigalovada Sutta as a form of ancestral devotion within the Nyadran Dauwang tradition practiced by the Buddhist community in Depok Hamlet, Java. Grounded in the understanding that religion and culture are deeply intertwined, the research aims to explore how Buddhist doctrinal values are actualized through local communal rituals and how these practices contribute to social cohesion, environmental stewardship, and cultural continuity. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews with religious leaders, elders, and community members, and analysis of ritual documentation. Triangulation of methods and sources was applied to enhance the credibility and depth of interpretation. The findings reveal that Nyadran Dauwang consists of four interrelated components: communal cleaning of irrigation canals (Susuk Wangang), ritual journeys accompanied by offerings and food sharing, interfaith prayer gatherings, and Wayang Kulit performances. These practices embody key Buddhist values such as spiritual friendship, loving-kindness, compassion, ethical reciprocity, and collective merit-making, as articulated in the Sigalovada Sutta. The tradition also reinforces respect for ancestors, strengthens intergenerational bonds, promotes ecological awareness, and fosters harmony in a pluralistic religious setting. Rather than functioning as a rigid doctrinal text, the Sigalovada Sutta operates as a living ethical framework that guides communal life through culturally resonant forms. In conclusion, the study demonstrates that Nyadran Dauwang represents a contextualized enactment of Buddhist ethics that integrates religious teachings with local cultural heritage. This integration offers an important model for Buddhist religious education, cultural preservation, and community-based approaches to social and environmental sustainability.
