Abstract

Religious freedom has been the subject of sustained debate among religious leaders throughout the history of human civilization. This has prompted various religious figures to develop and construct the concept with the aim of facilitating harmonious relations between religious communities. One of the figures who tried to elaborate on this concept was the prominent Muslim scholar, Tāhir Ibn Āshūr. This study examines the concept of religious freedom from Ibn Āshūr's perspective using a literature review or library study method. This article presents descriptive data, illustrating scholarly research with the potential to be further developed and applied in practice. The research approach used was descriptive qualitative, which aims to gather comprehensive information on the research topic. Data were collected through the systematic collation and categorization of online resources and related literature. The research found that Ibn Āshūr believed that religious freedom involves the inherent right of every individual to choose, believe, and practice their religion. Although convinced that Islam is the only true religion, he also showed respect for the beliefs and religions of others, demonstrating tolerance and recognition of the diversity of human beliefs. This article outlines three main aspects of Ibn Āshūr's views on religious freedom: the existence of restrictions on religious freedom, grounds in favor of religious conversion, and prohibition against free change of religion. This thorough analysis provides important insights into Ibn `Āshūr's views on religious freedom, and offers valuable implications for future research and practical applications.

Abstract

The tolak bala tradition holds profound significance in the lives of Pardamean Baru Village residents in Mandailing Natal. Amidst the escalating forces of globalization and modernization, such traditions frequently confront formidable challenges that originate both externally and internally within the community itself. This study endeavors to employ a phenomenological approach to delve into the subjective meanings intertwined with the rejection of bad luck practices in Pardamean Baru Village. Research methodologies encompassed in-depth interviews with community leaders well versed in the tolak bala tradition, alongside participatory observations aimed at comprehending the social, cultural, and environmental milieu in which this tradition unfolds. Subsequently, the amassed data underwent qualitative analysis, focusing on individuals' comprehension and engagement with tradition, as well as its relevance in their daily lives. The findings reveal that the tolak bala tradition transcends mere religious observance, permeating diverse facets of Pardamean Baru Village. This tradition holds profound spiritual connotations, as the community perceives the ritualistic rejection of the bala as a safeguard against impending threats and calamities. Moreover, this practice fosters interpersonal bonds and fortifies the community’s collective identity. This study underscores the need to apprehend the internal viewpoints of communities to safeguard and perpetuate invaluable cultural legacies. By grasping the intrinsic meanings and imports embedded within the tolak bala tradition, it is envisaged that more efficacious strategies can be devised to uphold this tradition amid the flux of contemporary times. Furthermore, this study enriches the discourse within phenomenology and cultural anthropology by delineating human experiences within a nuanced cultural and spiritual backdrop.

Abstract

This article examines the reception of the Qur'an in Kediri City Muslims against the covid-19 outbreak. This type of research is qualitative research, by basing the data collection method on literature study and field study at once. Furthermore, based on the data obtained, the author tries to analyze using phenomenological analysis and content analysis. The results obtained are that there are five typologies of Qur'anic receptions in Kediri City Muslims towards the Covid-19 outbreak, namely: First, those who interpret that this plague is essentially God's punishment, namely a curse from Allah SWT, God is angry and then sends his punishment. The second view says that this plague is essentially a kind of natural disaster. Changes in the ecosystem of the environment then cause this plague. Third, the view that this plague is essentially a form of major correction for human mistakes, mistakes in caring for the ecosystem, mistakes in caring for the environment then an imbalance arises then this plague is born. Fourth, the view that says that this plague is a test, a form of trial that Allah SWT sent down, deliberately revealed to His servants who were chosen to be upgraded. The process of upgrading must go through a test, through trials so that those who pass will rise in degrees. Fifth, the view that this plague is a form of grace, the love of Allah SWT because with this plague many things, many positive sides are felt.
