Abstract

This article examined Habib Husein Ja’far Al Hadar’s da’wa in the Youtube popular mass media under moderation and religious tolerance. Since the covid-19 pandemic, Habib Husein has continuously upgraded its da'wa spirit spreading peace through Youtube. Through Youtube channels “Jeda Nulis”, “Noice”, and “Cahaya Untuk Indonesia”, Habib Husein was able to engage millennials participating in Islamic discussion by inserting comedy. “Noice” is a da'wa platform accommodating millennials’ rarely-asked questions in da'wa assemblies. The goal is to discover the truth of what Islam advocates, both in video or audio-visual on Youtube. Besides, moderate material on Youtube has attracted millennials' curiosity about religious moderation and tolerance since the covid-19 pandemic. This public figure often filled out the religious discussion with other interfaith leaders (Buddhist and Christian). This article used a qualitative approach to managing, analyzing, and collecting data by investigating relevant and accountable literature in analyzing this research, using Alvin L. Betran's role theory, where the role can come from someone with a certain status or position in the community environment. This writing article's purpose is to find out how was Habib Husein Ja’far da’wa influenced religious moderation and tolerance on Youtube, which intensified during the Covid-19 pandemic. Therefore, the benefits of this research will be as material for knowledge about the urgency of expanding da’wa during the Covid-19 pandemic on social media. And above all, the writer hopes this study will be helpful for academics, future researchers and the general public Indonesia.

Abstract

This paper attempts to uncover the problematic authentication of hadith traditions of the Companion period regarding the concept of "Companion justice. " It is a fundamental problem with granting authority in determining the quality of a hadith narrated by the women who were always detached from the political interests of the rulers of the time in which the women lived. This paper uses a literature study with a theological-normative approach and a historical approach. This study found that 1) The problems of authenticating the Hadith of the companions can be grouped into two, namely in terms of personality quality and faith and adherence to religious norms, and philosophical problems and scientific establishment. 2) The criticism Hadith of Abu Hurairah also shows a problematic existence in the authentication of Hadith during the era of the Companions. Therefore, Muslims should be cautious in following the traditions of certain Companions, who were already highly trusted to convey hadith traditions. This article implies the authority of the Companions in conveying Hadith. It needs to be reexamined, not merely that certain authorities tend takhlid, thus ignoring other narrators, who tend to be less favored by certain Islamic groups or influenced by certain political authorities.

Abstract

Bau Nyale is a Lombok Sasak tradition associated with Princess Mandalika's sacred and mythological qualities. Every year, this ritual is carried out as a manner of thanking Allah and honoring Princess Mandalika's sacrifice in preserving West Nusa Tenggara's integrity. This study aims to explain the distinction between sacredness and economic commodification in the Bau Nyale tradition. The research method used is qualitative, with a sociological approach to religion. The main informants in this study were forty people from elements of the Chief of Tribal Council, Tourism Operators, Religious Leaders, Village Youth, Village Apparatus, Economic Actors/ Traders, Participants/ Community who joined Bau Nyale, who were selected by purposive sampling technique. The research procedure was carried out in stages: data collection, reduction, presentation, and analysis. This study shows that the distinction between sacredness and economic commodification in the Bau Nyale tradition is seen in the socio-religious and cosmological form of the Sasak people of Lombok, which has an interpretation value between the society and tourism managers. Bau Nyale is a symbol of the success of the feast and a form of gratitude to God for the abundance of grace and gifts to the harvest, both in the agricultural and marine fields. The mythology of Princess Mandalika as a figure of wisdom represents the dignity and worth of the female figure of the Sasak people of Lombok. In addition, the Bau Nyale tradition has a tourism value that should be promoted to be known in foreign countries, aimed at boosting the economy of Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara.

Abstract

This paper discusses how Ruqyah Jaranan, a cultural event in East Java, is constructed as a resistance to the existing culture. It was typical that resistance appears from the weak side to the strong side. This case shows a resistance culture that was born from the strong to the weak culture. It specifically talks about the way Ruqyah Jaranan emerged in Kedawung Jember as a way to change the nature of the good young generation in that village. This paper argues that this event is an attempt from a particular people in dealing with what so called as “good young generation”. But the value of the culture has negotiated with the way the society in that village articulated the nature of the good young generation. This event has implications to shape the religiosity and morality of the young generation as behavior in daily life.

Abstract

The habit of getting drunk and gambling rampant in the Cirebon Baru hamlet is a general problem faced by the community in Indonesia. This habit is considered a negative one because it contradicts the norms that the community has agreed upon. This negative behavior changed with the birth and development of the Mamba'ul Ishlah Islamic boarding school, driven by several religious leaders. This article aims to analyze the structural functionalism process carried out by the boarding school through its religious leaders so that it can change the social system of the community in a more positive direction. Through a case study approach, this article explains in an analytical descriptive manner. The theory used to analyze the case is Talcott Parson's structural functionalism which includes adaptation, goal attainment, integration, and latency pattern. This article found two important things related to the role of Islamic boarding schools in social change in the community, namely the cultural part by taking a more persuasive and intimate approach, namely by cutting the communication distance with the community through the tradition of jagongan and jokes. Second, the structural role is by utilizing the increasing social status of religious leaders so that they have complete legitimacy to direct the community in a more positive direction, namely the perpetuation of spiritual routines such as yasinan, istighotsah, shalawat assemblies, and yellow book recitation.

Abstract

The magical side of the jamasan ritual is often put aside to save the impression of the jamasan ritual as a result of the label of syncretism between Java and Islam. Because instead of being considered a 'religious ritual', jamasan is part of Javanese culture which is separated from their beliefs. However, academics need to pay attention to another part of the jamasan process to extract how this ritual holds various environmental values that shape the mindset and identity of the community. This research aims to explain how (1) the magical side of the Jamasan ritual can build a 'logical' rhetoric of Javanese beliefs. In addition, (2) how the belief in the sanctified objects as heirlooms has implications for the transfer of values of respect for the environment in which the Javanese live. This research takes a case study of the Jamasan Kiai Ngaliman Ritual in the Nganjuk Regency, using James George Frazer's magical theory approach and ethnographic methods for data collection. As a result, awareness of the people's attachment to their ancestors through heirlooms becomes a medium for how they 'communicate' with the surrounding nature. This awareness is reminiscent of their location in the mountains, which relies on good natural conditions for agriculture, plantations, stable soil and water intake, and avoidance covid virus and other natural disasters. This attachment to ancestors is valuable in maintaining the stability of social cohesion to understand the surrounding nature.

Abstract

Natural disasters can cause deep trauma to survivors, affecting various aspects of their lives, such as their mental health and quality of life. This study aimed to explore the role of religion in helping victims of natural disasters overcome the trauma caused by the 2004 earthquake and Tsunami in Aceh. The research method used a qualitative approach by interviewing several victims who survived the disaster. The data obtained from the interviews were then analyzed using a thematic analysis approach, and the results showed that religion played a significant role in helping victims overcome disaster trauma. In the face of losing family members, homes, and other assets, their religious beliefs provide emotional support and strength to carry on with life. Prayers, religious rituals, and participation in faith-based community activities helped them feel connected to fellow victims and alleviated their feelings of loneliness. Religion also served as a source of comfort for victims. Belief in greater divine power helps victims go through the recovery process with more confidence. Acceptance of fate and belief in justice helped them overcome feelings of confusion and anger towards their situation. However, the research also identified some challenges in integrating religious aspects into post-disaster recovery efforts. Differences in religious beliefs and individual interpretations of disaster events can cause tension and conflict within communities. Therefore, an approach that is inclusive and respectful of the diverse religious beliefs is necessary to support a holistic recovery process. This study concludes that religion plays an important role in helping victims of natural disasters cope with trauma and recover. Implementing a religiously sensitive approach to post-disaster relief efforts can increase the effectiveness and sustainability of the recovery efforts. The results of this study are expected to provide insights for humanitarian aid practitioners, researchers, and other relevant parties to develop more effective and sustainable interventions for victims of natural disasters in the future.

Abstract

This article aims to illustrate how the phenomenological approach developed by Richard C. Martin can be used to strengthen post-Orientalist Islamic studies. In this article, we outline the key concepts in phenomenology according to Richard C. Martin, including intuition, description, and reflection. This article then explains how this approach can be applied to Islamic studies. Using a phenomenological approach, researchers can gain a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of religious experiences in Islam. Furthermore, this article discusses the benefits and implications of phenomenology in Islamic studies. This study uses a qualitative approach with a literature review type of research, which means that data are collected from various existing sources, such as books, journals, articles, and writings related to the study of Islam through phenomenology in the view of Richard C. Martin. The use of a phenomenological approach can help overcome some of the challenges in Islamic studies, such as researchers’ subjectivity and diversity of interpretation. Using this approach, researchers can explore a broader understanding of the diversity of religious experiences in Islam and respect individual perspectives. In conclusion, this article presents the phenomenological approach developed by Richard. Martin could be a useful tool for strengthening Islamic studies. By understanding religious experiences in Islam through a phenomenological lens, researchers can achieve a deeper understanding and encourage dialog and understanding between individual Muslims and non-Muslims inherited by old orientalists.

Abstract

Wahidiyyah, which is centered in Kediri in the form of a sholawat tariqat, faces external and internal challenges. This study focuses on the Wahidiyyah elite's understanding of external-internal conflict, organizational legalization, and the socio-political values of organizational transformation amid the controversy surrounding its movement. The study used a sociological approach with the analysis of Burger and Luckman's Social Construction theory, which found that in the externalization space, conflict is understood as part of social dynamics.  In the Objectivation space, legalization is the socio-political power of Wahidiyah in the midst of the current debate on society.  With the issuance of the decree from the Attorney General's Office, Wahidiyah was placed in line with other Islamic religious organizations. In the Internalization Space, Wahidiyyah's socio-political values of transformation are openness, nationalism, democracy, and inclusivity.  The transformation of the institution from Tarekat to Shalawat wahidiyyah as a religious organization does not change the religious orientation of wahidiyyah nor does it change its teachings and practices.  The belief and enthusiasm of the congregation remain the same, as the opening of management representatives abroad is proof that wahidiyyah is loved by the congregation.
