Abstract

This article discusses the shift in religious patterns that occurred in the Muslim community of Kampung Inggris Pare. Kampung Inggris Pare is located in the Pare Sub-district, Kediri District, East Java, Indonesia, and is known as an English language education center that is visited by people from various regions. Initially, the Muslim community in the English Village Pare had a strong religious pattern and was closely related to Islamic traditions. They regularly follow religious practices, such as praying, fasting, and attending knowledge assemblies. In addition, they have established close social ties with local scholars and religious leaders. However, in recent years, there has been a shift in religious patterns among the Muslim community in the Kampung Inggris Pare. This study aims to analyze the factors that influence the shift in Islamic religious patterns in the community of Kampung Inggris Pare. To achieve this goal, the researcher used a qualitative approach that involved several research methods, including in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis.  This qualitative approach allows researchers to gain a deeper understanding of the changes that occur and the dynamics behind this shift in religious patterns. This research found that the rapid development of English language education and foreign culture has had a significant impact on the pattern of religiosity. People have begun to experience changes in their religious priorities and focuses. Economic development and increased social mobility also played important roles in this change. People who were previously more focused on religious education and activities are now more oriented towards finding better jobs and economic opportunities. Religious priorities tend to shift towards material success and modern lifestyles. This shift in religious patterns not only affects religious practices but also the social structure and values upheld by the Muslim community in Kampung Inggris Pare.

Abstract

This study discusses the moderation process of Islamic da'wah which puts forward a persuasive, tolerant, and cultural approach in a remote hamlet where the majority of the people are wine/arak producers. This research uses a qualitative methodology by following a constructionistic logic, namely placing the subject's relationship with the reality-in-awareness of the research subject. Reality in the awareness of this subject can start from observations, participation in interactions, in-depth dialogues, reading and so on. The results of this research can be narrowed down into three points, namely; First, Islamic da'wah with a moderate and moderate approach will minimize friction/horizontal clashes between da'i (subject of da'wah) and mad'u (object of da'wah). Second, the understanding of the local village religious leaders who are NU-style (Nahdlotul Ulama) has implications for the practice of cultural Islamic da'wah which prioritizes moderate attitudes and moderation. Third, the moderation model of Islamic da'wah in Poncol Hamlet (arak producing community) has proven to be able to consistently attract public sympathy. This is reinforced by statistical evidence of the quantity and quality of the local community's religiosity consistently.

Abstract

Mosques are central institutions in Muslim life, and have traditionally focused on religious aspects. However, in the context of an increasingly complex modern society, the role of mosques has evolved to encompass various dimensions of life, including religious literacy. This article aims to conduct a sociological analysis of the literacy movement at the Jendral Sudirman Mosque in Yogyakarta, considering the shifting role of mosques in supporting religious literacy. Through a qualitative approach involving interviews and direct observation, this study explores how the Jendral Sudirman Mosque facilitates literacy programs that not only meet religious needs but also open doors for academic learning. The findings show that the mosque has adopted an academically structured approach in presenting literacy materials, which has successfully attracted the attention of not only parents but also the younger generation, especially students. A sociological analysis was conducted to understand the social, political, and cultural context surrounding the literacy movement at the Jendral Sudirman Mosque. The article reveals that this literacy movement is not an isolated phenomenon but a response to existing social and religious dynamics. In addition, it highlights the important role of the mosque's takmir in leading and driving the literacy initiative as well as bridging the relationship between the mosque and its community. This article makes an important contribution to understanding the evolution of the role of mosques in modern society, particularly in the context of religious literacy. Abstract

The art of Madihin poetry is a rich part of the archipelago's cultural values and is an important heritage in Indonesian literary tradition. This article aims to examine the value of da'wah contained in the art of literary verse from the semiotic perspective of Roland Barthes. Originally intended for nobles or royal families, Madihin has evolved into a popular art form over time. Beyond its performative aspects, Madihin's literary dimension encapsulates numerous values. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method, utilizing Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis to interpret denotations, connotations, and myths. Semiotics provides a structured framework for understanding Madihin as a form of communication, conveying messages inherent in local art forms. The data under examination consists of Madihin poems performed by the John Tralala Group. Through interpretative techniques, the collected data is semiotically analyzed to elucidate the implicit da'wah values embedded within Madihin poetry. The research findings demonstrate the presence of worship and knowledge values that can be applied to everyday life. Moreover, the application of Roland Barthes' semiotics reveals Madihin literature's potential to influence public perceptions and artistic practices, thereby facilitating message dissemination. Syair madihin as an art can also be part of the preaching media in which there is preaching value, with research evidence that some texts of madihin poems performed by John Tralala have preaching values in the form of aqidah values, namely believing in Allah's qada and qadar, Sharia values in the form of prayer worship, the obligation to cover the aurat, and the law of marriage, and moral values in the form of mutual respect, fairness, and the obligations of a leader.

Abstract

The escalation of ecological crises is increasingly evident in contemporary society, particularly with the surge in ecological disasters across various regions of Indonesia. This phenomenon is intricately linked to the intensifying extreme weather patterns, a consequence of post-World War II industrialization and the unchecked expansion of industries in developing nations. This study delves into the ideologies and actions of the Front Nahdliyin for the Sovereignty of Natural Resources (FNKSDA) aimed at mitigating the unfolding ecological catastrophes, which are symptomatic of the ongoing crisis. It investigates how FNKSDA's initiatives intersect with the principles of progressive Islam. Notably, one of FNKSDA's key endeavors involves countering neo-extractivist practices spearheaded by PT BSI in Banyuwangi, which resulted in devastating mud floods in 2016. Employing a comprehensive literature review methodology encompassing scholarly works, journals, and pertinent press releases, this research unveils FNKSDA's alignment with progressive Islamic tenets. Conceptually, this alignment manifests through their interpretative approaches to religious texts, while in practice, it is evidenced through their advocacy for marginalized communities and steadfast resistance against oppressive systems.

Abstract

This research examines the contestation of Muslim religious patterns in Indonesia, especially on social media. Contestation of the meaning of the state or state system from an Islamic perspective is echoed by extreme and moderate Islam. Extreme-conservative religious patterns tend to interpret democracy as a product of infidels and a political game of chameleons, even thagut. A moderate Islamic camp supports the democratic system on the grounds that it is for the benefit of citizens who are not only Muslims. The data objects studied in this article were taken from @almanhaj. or.id, @safaridakwah, www.almanhaj.or.id and @ulama.nusantara, @nahdlatululama, www.nu.or.id. The research method used in this study was qualitative, using literature studies and processing data objects taken from social media channels and websites. The identity of this article is also a media/netnography study, whose processing process begins with collecting data (virtual observation), which is then analyzed and processed using Teun A. Van Dijk's discourse analysis theory, which consists of text, social cognition, and social context. Finally, this article concludes that the concept of the true and ideal state from extremes is the caliphate system and the enforcement of Islamic law in the state against anyone, regardless of any religious background known as dar al-islam. In contrast to moderates, who interpret democracy as a good state concept to be applied in multi-religious Indonesia known as Dar al-Salam. This view of moderates cannot be separated from Prophet's command, namely, in the state to emphasize the benefits for all groups. The theoretical implication in this study is that the state system built and narrated in the digital space by Muslims has two poles, namely the Islamic state "dar al-islam" and the prosperous, peaceful state "Dar al-salam.” The discovery of these two major concepts is an academic contribution resulting from the study of the meaning of the state in the digital space by religious organizations in Indonesia. Thus, this study provides benefits for future researchers in developing Islamic studies and statehoods from an Islamic perspective.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the phenomenon of religious moderation that occurs in puritan Islam, focusing on a case study of Jemaah LDII (Lembaga Dakwah Islam Indonesia) in Sambiresik Village, Gampengrejo District, Kediri Regency. Purist Islam is known for its conservative and normative interpretation of religion, but this study reveals how the LDIIcongregation applies an inclusive and tolerant approach in their religious practice. The research method used was a qualitative approach with data collection techniques through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and content analysis of related documents. Data were analyzed using an inductive approach to identify patterns of behavior and views that emerged from the interviewees and data sources. The results showed that the Sambiresik Village LDIIcongregation has an inclusive approach to practicing religious teachings. Despite coming from a puritanical Islamic background, they practice tolerance towards other religious groups and advocate interfaith cooperation to advance the local community. This research also reveals the important role played by religious figures in promoting this inclusive attitude. In the context of Sambiresik Village, historical factors, religious education focusing on moderate understanding, and positive social interactions were identified as key drivers of this inclusive approach. However, challenges such as negative perceptions of other puritanical religious groups and external dynamics that could affect the stability of inclusiveness remain a concern. In conclusion, this study illustrates that religious moderation can occur among puritanical Islamists such as Jemaah LDII in Sambiresik Village. This shows the potential to build faith harmony amidst differences in beliefs. This study provides deep insight into how an inclusive approach to religious practice can be adopted and sustained in communities characterized by puritanical interpretations of religion.
