Abstract

Textbooks are essential learning resources for students and have a profound impact on their overall development. They act as agents of social change, influencing students' values, beliefs, and cultural understanding from an early age. Through textbooks and classroom interactions, students absorb gender socialization, societal norms, beliefs, gender roles, identities, inequalities, and biases. Therefore, it is vital to create gender-neutral textbooks, which require a comprehensive analysis of existing materials. As a result, numerous studies have been conducted both locally and internationally to investigate gender stereotypes and biases in textbooks. This meta-analysis aims to examine three specific aspects of the selected research. This study utilizes a meta-analysis design, a type of secondary research that identifies, examines, and interprets all pertinent studies within a particular topic area. The study's findings lay the groundwork for policy changes at the state or national level, ensuring the development and implementation of guidelines that foster gender-neutral content in educational materials. These results are also valuable for textbook development agencies, authors, and educators in creating a gender-sensitive curriculum and textbooks. Ultimately, the implications of this research will help future researchers identify areas for further study.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effect of the guided inquiry method on students' adaptive reasoning ability at the secondary school level. With a quasi-experimental design using a Nonequivalent Control Group Design, class X IPS 1 applied guided discovery, while class X IPS 2 was the control with conventional learning. Adaptive reasoning ability data were obtained from pretests and posttests, then tested using paired-sample T-test. The results showed a significant increase in the experimental class (N-Gain: 0.64) compared to the control class (N-Gain: 0.55), with a significance value of 0.009. This finding indicates that the application of the guided discovery method has a more significant positive impact on improving students' adaptive reasoning ability when compared to conventional learning. The implication is that teachers and education practitioners can consider using this method to improve the quality of mathematics learning at the secondary school level. Further studies could explore specific aspects of this method and its long-term impact on student achievement

Abstract

Abstract

Conventionally, the quantitative research approach is believed to be used in natural science to experiment with phenomena and test theories and hypothesis. However, it has been practiced by researchers in social science and education at present. The study aims to critically analyze the philosophical stances of quantitative research and to explore the uses and limitations of quantitative research methods in education. I used document analysis as a research method where I collected previously published books, journal articles, and book chapters in the related field, read them, explored the required information from the materials, analyzed them critically, and made the arguments in different themes. The study revealed that quantitative research is based on the positivist paradigm which believes in objectivity, and experimental reality. It further showed that quantitative research is significant in the field of education to test the methods, and teaching-learning theories, to see the cause-and-effect relationship, and to see the causal relationship between the variables. Moreover, it shows that quantitative research is significant to explore the results that can be generalized in a large population. Additionally, the study explored that quantitative research has several issues such as negligence on educational complexities, sampling bias, issues of validity, and generalizability, and ethical issues related to consent, confidentiality, anonymity, sampling, data collection, interpretation, and reporting. It suggests that researchers in education should incorporate the qualitative method and mixed-method research to address diversity, emotion, experience, and multiple realities.

Abstract

The study explored teachers’ resilience in challenging environments in Morogoro Municipality using a mixed-methods approach. It combined quantitative data from a resilience scale with qualitative insights from interviews with nine teachers. Findings indicated that many teachers reported low resilience, correlating with issues like high turnover and job dissatisfaction. Teachers expressed a lack of confidence and competence, influenced by socio-economic factors and difficult work conditions. Thematic analysis revealed varied individual experiences of resilience, highlighting the need for supportive school cultures and targeted strategies to enhance teachers' coping abilities. The study advocates for tailored professional development programs addressing teachers’ specific needs, particularly those with low resilience. Recommendations include fostering positive school environments, promoting social support, and improving time management and coping strategies. By focusing on these areas, educational institutions can build a more resilient teaching workforce, benefiting both educators and students. The findings contribute to the broader discourse on teacher resilience, suggesting that systematic support can improve educational outcomes and retention in Morogoro Municipality and beyond.
