Abstract

Scientific attitude is an important element in learning Natural Sciences (IPA) which must be instilled early on. However, many studies reveal that students in elementary schools still have a low scientific attitude so it takes some effort to improve it. Efforts that can be done include implementing a learning model and media that are thought to facilitate students in developing their scientific attitude, one of which is the Guided Inquiry model with Sparkol Videoscribe learning media. This research has the aim of improving students' scientific attitudes by applying the Guided Inquiry model assisted by Sparkol Videoscribe in science learning. The method used in this study is a quasi-experimental type of experimental research and the Nonequivalent control group design. The population in this study were all grade 5 students of elementary schools in Cigasong Sub-district, Majalengka with the sample being grade 5 students of SDN Cicenang 1, Majalengka of two classes. The results of the study illustrate that the scientific attitude of students who obtained the Guided Inquiry model assisted by Sparkol Videoscribe was better than students who obtained conventional learning. From these results, it can be concluded that the Guided Inquiry model assisted by Sparkol Videoscribe is effective in improving students' scientific attitudes.

Abstract

In the rapidly changing global landscape, adaptability to new challenges is essential. Mathematics, recognized as a key contributor to problem-solving skills, holds significant importance in navigating unfamiliar situations. This study delves into the correlation between mathematics interest, reading comprehension, and mathematical problem-solving abilities among elementary school students. Employers and academic institutions increasingly emphasize the application of mathematical knowledge in diverse scenarios, prompting educational reforms prioritizing problem-solving skills. The investigation involved 76 elementary students in Majalengka Regency, Indonesia, exploring mathematics interest, reading comprehension, and problem-solving skills using questionnaires and tests. Findings unveiled a noteworthy positive correlation between reading comprehension and mathematical problem-solving, surpassing the correlation with mathematics interest. Regression analysis reinforced this, highlighting the collective substantial impact of mathematics interest and reading comprehension on students' problem-solving proficiency. This study underscores the crucial role of reading comprehension in interpreting narrative-based mathematical problems. Understanding textual content significantly influences problem-solving strategies. Moreover, affective abilities, particularly mathematics interest, contribute significantly to problem-solving skills. A heightened interest in mathematics enhances motivation, encourages deeper conceptual learning, and fosters creativity in problem-solving.These results underscore the necessity of a holistic approach to mathematics education. Addressing not only cognitive aspects but also affective and reading proficiency facets can substantially enhance students' mathematical problem-solving abilities. Understanding the interrelationship among mathematics interest, reading comprehension, and affective abilities can pave the way for more effective teaching methodologies and improved academic outcomes in mathematics.

Abstract

This study investigates elementary school students' 3D geometric thinking skills using the Van Hiele model. The research employed a grounded theory approach, utilizing tests, observations, and interviews to assess students' geometric thinking levels across two elementary schools in West Java and Central Java, Indonesia. A total of 6 test items were developed based on Van Hiele's theory, targeting the visualization, analysis, and informal deduction levels. Results showed varied performance between the two schools. Students from the Majalengka school demonstrated stronger visualization skills (77.14%), while those from the Surakarta school showed better performance in analysis (67.86%) and informal deduction (53.57%). Overall, students exhibited a good foundational understanding of 3D shapes, with most achieving the visualization and analysis levels. However, challenges emerged at the informal deduction level, where students often opted for simpler problem-solving methods over more systematic approaches. The study highlights the effectiveness of the Van Hiele model in assessing geometric thinking development and provides valuable insights for curriculum development and teaching strategies. It emphasizes the need to reinforce visualization and analysis skills while gradually introducing more abstract and systematic thinking in geometry education. The findings contribute to the understanding of elementary students' 3D geometric thinking skills and offer a basis for improving geometry instruction at the primary level.

Abstract

Abstract

Fraction concepts represent one of the most challenging mathematical domains in elementary education, with persistent international difficulties in student comprehension despite their fundamental importance for advanced mathematical proficiency. Traditional instructional methods emphasizing rote memorization have consistently demonstrated limitations in fostering deep conceptual understanding. This study investigated the effectiveness of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in enhancing elementary students' fraction understanding compared to conventional teaching approaches. A quasi-experimental design with non-equivalent control groups was employed, involving 38 elementary students from nine schools. The experimental group (n=16) received PBL instruction featuring authentic, real-world fraction problems requiring collaborative solution strategies, while the control group (n=22) participated in traditional direct instruction. Data collection utilized pre-test and post-test assessments measuring conceptual and procedural fraction understanding, structured classroom observations documenting engagement and learning behaviors, and student feedback questionnaires capturing motivation and confidence levels. The experimental group demonstrated substantial improvement with a mean increase of 33.25 points (Cohen's d = 3.47), while the control group showed minimal gains (7.78 points, Cohen's d = 0.91). Paired-sample t-tests confirmed statistically significant differences (p < 0.001) favoring the experimental group. Qualitative analysis revealed enhanced collaborative learning, mathematical discourse, and problem-solving confidence among PBL participants. Student motivation scores were significantly higher in the experimental group (M = 4.31 vs. 3.18). Results provide robust empirical evidence supporting PBL's superiority over traditional methods for fraction instruction. The findings validate constructivist learning principles and demonstrate that authentic problem-solving contexts facilitate deeper conceptual understanding, multiple representational thinking, and sustained student engagement, addressing persistent challenges in elementary mathematics education.
