Abstract

Confucianism is one of the cultural and spiritual heritages of the Chinese community that has long been present in Indonesia. However, throughout its historical development, this religion has faced various challenges, particularly during the New Order era, when the state systematically revoked official recognition of Confucianism and restricted its religious expression as well as Chinese cultural practices. The discrimination experienced by Confucian adherents encompassed administrative, social, and educational dimensions, forcing them to conceal their religious identity and limit their participation in the public sphere. The Reform era marked an important turning point when the government, particularly under President Abdurrahman Wahid, began to restore official recognition of Confucianism and revoke discriminatory policies. Nevertheless, formal recognition alone is insufficient. Sustained commitment from the state is still required to guarantee the right to freedom of religion, eradicate discriminatory practices, and strengthen multicultural education so that diversity in Indonesia is genuinely valued as a national asset. This study aims to analyse the relationship between the state and Confucianism in Indonesia by highlighting the impact of state policies during the New Order and the post-Reform era. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach, using in-depth interviews to explore the experiences, perceptions, and adaptive strategies of Confucian adherents in responding to state policies. The findings indicate that although the Reform era has opened broader space for recognition and religious freedom, continuous state commitment remains necessary to ensure freedom of religion, eliminate discrimination, and reinforce multicultural education. This study underscores the crucial role of the state in protecting the rights of religious minorities as part of efforts to realize social justice and uphold the values of Pancasila.

Abstract

Fundamentalist and intolerant ways of practicing religion, marked by a tendency to absolutize the truth of one’s own perspective, constitute a socio-religious phenomenon that has the potential to create conflict and disintegration in communal life. Individuals who practice religion in a fundamentalist manner tend to understand their religious teachings rigidly and exclusively. This attitude leads them to reject alternative viewpoints. Indonesia, as a multi-religious country, is particularly vulnerable to this phenomenon. Many social conflicts arise because people understand and practice their religious teachings in a fundamentalistic way. In response to this issue, this paper seeks to critically examine fundamentalist ways of practicing religion based on Richard Rorty’s concept of the ironist. The aim is to discover a form of social order that is more open to religious diversity. The core of Richard Rorty’s concept of the ironist person is an awareness of human contingency, which enables individuals to refrain from claiming their beliefs and ways of life as the sole absolute truth and to remain open to recognizing what is good in others. The consequence of this perspective is an attitude of openness toward all forms of difference, fostering a richer understanding and a more tolerant way of life. This study employs a qualitative method with a library-based research approach. The findings indicate that Richard Rorty’s concept of the ironic human being is one of the concepts well suited to critiquing fundamentalist religious practices in Indonesia.

Abstract

The post-truth era is characterized by the weakening of the authority of truth, the dominance of emotion over rationality, and the fragmentation of the public sphere, which has led to a moral crisis and the fragility of human character. This study aims to explore the relevance of Hegel's philosophy as a conceptual framework for responding to this crisis. Using a qualitative method based on literature studies and Hegel's dialectical analysis, this study reinterprets the concepts of ‘Geist’, ‘Bildung’, and ‘Sittlichkeit’ as strategies for character development. The results of the study show that true character can only be formed through intersubjective consciousness, historical-cultural processes, and ethical praxis in the community. Therefore, character education in the post-truth era should not stop at digital literacy or the internalization of moral values, but must foster critical reflection, moral courage, and active participation in ethical life together. This study concludes that the post-truth crisis is not only a threat, but also a dialectical opportunity to strengthen human integrity and rebuild the moral foundations of contemporary society.

Abstract

The rapid development of information and communication technologies has brought about fundamental changes in the landscape of contemporary political communication. Digital mass media not only function as channels for the dissemination of political information but also serve as arenas for meaning construction, narrative production, and the negotiation of political perspectives at the societal level. This study aims to analyze the role of digital mass media in shaping public political views and to examine the patterns of interaction among media institutions, political actors, and the public within the context of digital democracy. The research employs a systematic literature review method by examining relevant and reputable scholarly sources, including indexed national and international journals, academic books, research reports, and policy articles published between 2020 and 2025. The findings indicate that digital mass media exert a significant influence on the formation of public political opinion through mechanisms of framing, agenda setting, and political narrative construction. The interactive nature of digital media enables active public participation in political discourse, contributing to the emergence of more deliberative and participatory patterns of political engagement. However, this dynamic also presents serious challenges, including opinion polarization, information bias, and the spread of misinformation, which have the potential to undermine the quality of public deliberation. This study underscores the importance of strengthening media literacy and political literacy as essential prerequisites for critical and responsible political participation. Furthermore, digital mass media are expected to fulfil their ethical and normative functions by providing accurate, balanced, and contextualized information. Theoretically, this article contributes to the development of political communication studies and digital media research, while also offering practical implications for enhancing the quality of democracy in the digital era.

Abstract

In 2025, the Republic of Indonesia marks its 80th anniversary, offering a critical moment to evaluate the nation’s collective performance across key sectors. This study provides a comprehensive and reflective assessment of Indonesia’s political, economic, social, educational, cultural, environmental, and global development trajectories. Using a qualitative-descriptive approach and a systematic literature review, the analysis draws on official government documents, international institutional reports, scholarly publications, and credible media investigations. The findings show that although Indonesia has made notable progress—emerging as the world’s third-largest democracy and Southeast Asia’s largest economy—substantial structural challenges remain. Democratic consolidation is hindered by ethical violations in judicial institutions, increasing oligarchic influence, and stagnation in anti-corruption efforts. Economic growth has not fully translated into equitable distribution, evidenced by persistent inequality, governance failures in social assistance, and continued labor-market mismatches. The education and health sectors demonstrate improved access yet uneven quality, while environmental degradation and a slow clean-energy transition pose urgent threats to sustainability. Globally, Indonesia plays an active diplomatic role, but institutional constraints limit its international effectiveness and innovation capacity. The study aims at arguing that Indonesia’s 80-year milestone should serve as a catalyst for reaffirming constitutional ideals and strengthening governance, equity, and sustainability as essential foundations for realizing the vision of 2045 Golden Indonesia.

Abstract

The Betawi konde cepol is an important element of traditional Betawi hairstyling that functions not only as a form of hair arrangement but also as a representation of aesthetic, symbolic, and socio-cultural values. Knowledge of the konde cepol has been transmitted from generation to generation through everyday practices, customary activities, and the role of women within family and community settings. However, changes in lifestyle, modernization, and the declining regeneration of cultural practitioners have posed challenges to the sustainability of this traditional knowledge. This study aims to examine the Betawi konde cepol as a form of intergenerational traditional knowledge, encompassing its history, production techniques, philosophical meanings, and the natural, layered, and adaptive patterns of knowledge transmission. This research employs a qualitative approach through literature review, observation, and interviews with Betawi cultural practitioners and activists. The findings indicate that the Betawi konde cepol plays a significant role in strengthening Betawi cultural identity by representing values of simplicity, neatness, and the elegance of Betawi women. Preservation efforts through tutorial activities involving youth participation, cultural education, festival organization, documentation initiatives, and proposals for recognition as intangible cultural heritage are strategic steps to ensure the sustainability and continued relevance of Betawi konde cepol traditional knowledge for younger generations.
