Abstract

The devotional traditions of Semana Santa and Tuan Ma in Larantuka, which have been ongoing for over five centuries, constitute profound and integral religious practices for the local Catholic community. Examined from the perspective of customary law in the Code of Canon Law (CCL) Canons 25-26, this analysis aims to evaluate whether these traditions meet the criteria to be recognized as valid customs with legal force. In conducting this assessment, the research involves examining the extensive history of these traditions, comparing their practices with the requirements set forth in Canons 25 and 26, and analyzing the support from ecclesiastical authorities and local government. The results indicate that the Semana Santa and Tuan Ma traditions meet the criteria established in CCL Canons 25-26, involving the continuous participation of the entire community for over five centuries. Formal support from the Bishop of Larantuka and cooperation with local government agencies strengthen the legitimacy of these traditions, ensuring that their practices are respected and preserved within the framework of ecclesiastical law. Thus, this analysis confirms that the devotional traditions of Semana Santa and Tuan Ma are not only significant cultural heritage but also integral parts of customary law within the Catholic Church, in accordance with CCL Canons 25-26.

Abstract

The Apostle Paul's writings in Romans 1:26-27 explain unnatural sexual relations between men and women. This text is generally translated as the practice of same-sex (homosexual) relations. But long before the writings of the Apostle Paul there was a letter from the famous Stoic, Seneca, which discussed the background to the practice of same-sex relationships among the Romans. The text in Seneca's letter does not directly refer to Homosexual practices as traditionally understood in Paul's writings in Romans 1:26-27. This research aims to compare Seneca's letter 95 with Paul's writing in Romans 1:26-27. It aims to provide a different perspective on homosexuals and can provide historical background in Roman culture to Paul's writings in Romans 1:26-27. The research method in this research is hermeneutics and literature review. According to Romans 1:26-27, homosexual practices are a sin that incurs God's wrath. Meanwhile, for Seneca in letter 95, engaging in same-sex relations in Roman culture was motivated by a loss of wisdom, lack of self-control and the destruction of the morals of men and women, thus creating unnatural relationships.

Abstract

On the other hand, from a Christian philosophical perspective, the concept of salvation can be approached through rational thinking and conceptual analysis. Christian philosophy often explores ontological and epistemological questions about the nature of salvation, such as the relationship between human freedom and God's sovereignty, as well as the nature of spiritual truth. This research highlights the differences in sources of authority, methods of truth discovery, and ultimate goals between theological and philosophical approaches to salvation. While theology relies on religious teachings, divine revelation, and religious experience, Christian philosophy tends to use logical reasoning and conceptual analysis. However, these two fields can complement each other in deepening understanding of the concept of salvation, creating creative and in-depth dialogue about the nature of the Christian faith. This research provides valuable insights for theologians, philosophers, and practitioners of Christianity to explore the concept of salvation holistically, combining deep theological understanding with critical philosophical analysis.
