Abstract

This research is motivated by the lack of optimal learning activities and processes in developing students' spatial visual intelligence rationally and logically to create painting art in the UNIMED Fine Arts Education study program. This research aims to improve visual spatial intelligence and the quality of student paintings through the development of an ecology-based painting learning model. This development research uses the 4D model (defining, designing, developing, and disseminating). Based on the results of the study, it is known that; the design of the ecological wisdom-based painting learning model is based on an ecopedagogical learning approach. The design of this ecological wisdom-based painting learning model concretely adapts the syntax of the ELM Eco EA learning model and the free expression learning method. The adaptation of the ELM Eco EA learning model and free expression learning method is the basis for the design of the developed ecology-based painting learning model. The syntax and learning steps of these models and methods were reconstructed to produce a more contextualized hypothetical painting learning model design consisting of several steps, namely; 1) Preparation; 2) Providing Stimulus; 3) Investigation; 4) Determination of Theme; 5) Preparation of Tools and Materials; 6) Implementation; 7) Evaluation. After the developed learning model has met the eligibility criteria, overall the results of the data analysis of this trial are effective, this can be seen from the criteria for achieving classical completeness, achieving learning objectives, and student responses in accordance with the criteria specified in the learning and material studied.

Abstract

Indonesia is renowned for its rich cultural heritage and diverse beliefs, one of which is Ugamo Malim, a tradition embraced by the Parmalim community of the Batak tribe. The wedding customs of the Parmalim, particularly in Sianjur Mula-Mula, preserve ancestral rituals that diverge significantly from those of Christian or Islamic Batak communities. This research investigates how the Parmalim wedding tradition, particularly its symbolic six-movement ceremonial dance, can inspire the creation of painting artworks. The study aims to delve into the cultural significance of these traditions, enhance appreciation for the beauty of Parmalim’s heritage, and promote the preservation and celebration of Indonesia’s cultural diversity. The creative process employed a structured methodology comprising preparation, elaboration, contemplation, and realization to develop meaningful and impactful artworks. Utilizing bravura and chiaroscuro techniques, the artist produced twelve paintings inspired by Parmalim’s wedding traditions, each capturing symbolic elements such as “Hohom,” representing gentleness, and “Mangurdot Somba,” reflecting joy. However, this article presents only three of these paintings, focusing on their symbolic elements and artistic interpretation. These works demonstrate a fusion of traditional themes and creative expression, employing freely chosen materials and tools on sketched canvases to achieve optimal visualization and proportionality. The study concludes that creating paintings based on Parmalim wedding traditions not only showcases artistic prowess but also serves as an act of cultural appreciation and preservation. This body of work underscores the profound connection between art and cultural identity, reinforcing the significance of valuing Batak heritage and fostering cultural diversity.

Abstract

As technological advancements continue to progress, customs and values have undergone significant shifts. However, the passion of the younger generation, particularly Papuan children and those residing in Sentani Village Asei, for Sentani paintings on kombouw bark is beginning to wane. These developments and increasingly advanced technological advancements have not only led to the shifting of traditions and values, but also the erosion of the love for young generations, especially Papuan children and those in Sentani Village Asei, for the art of painting Sentani motifs on kombouw bark. This phenomenon suggests that a substantial portion of school-aged Sentani children lack knowledge or understanding of the Sentani motifs themselves. The purpose of this research is to delve into the function and significance of traditional kombouw bark painting within the Asei community of Sentani District, Papua. This research employs a qualitative approach, utilizing ethnographic methods, to explore the values, functions, and meanings of traditional paintings on kombouw bark within society. The findings reveal that kombouw paintings serve multiple purposes, including ritual, spiritual, social, economic, and aesthetic functions. Each motif carries a profound symbolic meaning that encapsulates the relationship between individuals and nature, spirituality, and philosophical beliefs. Furthermore, this study identifies conservation efforts undertaken through the role of Traditional Institutions, artists, and development strategies aimed at preserving cultural heritage. This conclusion underscores the paramount importance of kombouw painting as a sustainable expression of Asei cultural identity. Conservation efforts for Kombouw Painting involve Traditional Institutions, who are responsible for maintaining, protecting, and preserving this painting art. This includes ensuring the authenticity of traditional motifs.

Abstract

By fostering growth in the areas of lodging, communication, and transportation, Indonesia's tourist industry contributes significantly to the country's economy. When tourism is managed well, it may raise living standards, spur economic growth, and generate employment possibilities. The Samosir Regency, especially the Tuktuk Siadong region, which is renowned for its rich Batak culture and breathtaking natural beauty surrounding Lake Toba, is one of the most intriguing instances. Tuktuk Siadong's traditional villages, indigenous homes, and lively cultural rites inspire artists, particularly painters, in addition to providing stunning scenery. The purpose of this study is to investigate how Tuktuk Siadong might serve as a source of inspiration for paintings as well as how it might advance local artistic and cultural preservation. The four primary phases of the creative process—preparation, elaboration, contemplation, and realization—follow a systematic methodology. Data collecting, conceptual development, artistic method experimentation, and painting execution are all part of these phases. Three of the twelve paintings produced as a result of this study are highlighted in this publication. With elements of traditional Batak symbols and natural sceneries, these artworks portray Tuktuk Siadong's scenic beauty and cultural diversity. The imaginative methods used, such chiaroscuro and bravura, add to the paintings' visual impact and lend them both artistic appeal and cultural relevance. In conclusion, the paintings help to introduce, promote, and protect Tuktuk Siadong's natural and cultural legacy. In addition to assisting people in appreciating Batak cultures, they emphasize the importance of visual arts in fostering cultural identity and tourism growth.

Abstract

Literacy is a fundamental prerequisite for human comprehension. While Bandung boasts a diverse array of cafes that incorporate unique concepts such as movie, music, or nature themes, the presence of library-themed cafes remains a minority. Consequently, strategically incorporating the library cafe trend into contemporary life, encompassing aspects like lifestyle, presents a compelling strategy to promote literacy. By presenting the library concept within a welcoming and aesthetically pleasing cafe ambiance, this research employs a qualitative approach grounded in design thinking. Data collection involves questionnaires, interviews, and observations. Literacy is an indispensable aspect of daily life. One effective approach to enhancing literacy is through the design of short films that integrate literacy into the fabric of one’s lifestyle. By portraying literacy as a fashionable and engaging activity, short films can inspire college students and learners to incorporate reading into their daily routines, thereby reinforcing literacy culture.

Abstract

This study investigates the utilization of rats as symbolic representations of corruptors within the context of creating dark art paintings employing drawing techniques. Rats were selected due to their association with greed, cunning, and destructive nature, which effectively encapsulate corrupt behavior. The dark art movement serves as a visual approach to convey the moral and societal consequences of corruption, with a particular emphasis on evoking a somber and symbolic atmosphere. Drawing techniques that prioritize intricate line details and shadow play are employed to explore the emotional and narrative elements of the artwork. The media utilized include pencils, drawing pens, charcoal, and ink on watercolor paper. The outcomes of the artwork creation demonstrate that the incorporation of rat symbols within dark art compositions can effectively convey messages of social criticism regarding corruption. The amalgamation of dark elements, dramatic textures, and rat symbolism results in works that not only possess aesthetic value but also serve as a medium of reflection and education for the community. The drawing technique offers flexibility in conveying visual details, thereby enhancing the representation of the underlying messages conveyed in the painting.

Abstract

Abhirama Park, a green open space in Sidoarjo, is directly managed by the Environmental and Sanitation Agency (DLHK) of Sidoarjo Regency. The park’s primary attraction lies in its playground facilities and recreational areas, making it a popular destination for children and families. Beyond its recreational value, Abhirama Park also serves as an educational space for children, promoting environmental cleanliness. The park offers an interactive experience for visitors, allowing them to engage with animals such as birds, chickens, and fish. While some signage is already present, it is deemed insufficient in effectively conveying information to visitors. The presence of signage is crucial for facilitating navigation, particularly for first-time visitors to a tourist destination. Therefore, this study aims to redesign the signage system to enhance its informativeness, aesthetics, and functionality, meeting the specific needs of visitors. The research methodology employed is a collaborative approach that integrates design principles with the TOWS matrix analysis technique. This approach ensures that the signage design aligns with the park’s identity and appeals to the target audience. The resulting signage design strategically positions information to enhance the overall experience and satisfaction of visitors during their visit.
