Abstract

This study aims at explaining the symbols used in the novel and describing the values of optimistic reflected in the symbols used in Hemingway’s The Old man and The Sea. This research is classified as a descriptive qualitative method. The primary data source of this study is the novel The Old Man and the sea by Ernest Hemingway. The collecting data process is note-taking technique. This study is also categorized as library research. Based on the findings and discussion, the researcher draws the conclusion such follow. First, it is found that there are eight symbols used in this novel. They are classified into Individual symbol and Universal symbol. In the novel the Old Man and the Sea the symbols which the researcher considers as individual symbols. Individual symbols are the old man as a symbol of someone who has optimistic, Manolin as a symbol of hope, Marlin as a symbol Struggle of life, Shark as a symbol of Destruction and problem, joe Di Maggio as a symbol Strong desire, bird as a symbol of help. The second category is Universal symbol. universal symbol are Sea as symbol of universe, Lion as symbol of strength. there are two elements or values which characterize someone as the one who has optimistic life which is reflected in the symbols used in this novel. They are the values of struggle and positive thinking, Second, Those symbols reflect the values of optimistic life which is to be the theme of the novel.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study deals with the graduate students’ syntactical errors in writing thesis. This thesis describes the syntactical errors made by the graduate students of English Department and Applied Linguistics of the State University of Medan in writing thesis. One of the purposes of writing thesis is to know the types of syntacticalerror and the dominant types. This study uses a qualitative design in which the data are taken from the sentences of thesis. The data are collected and described using surface strategy taxonomy proposed by Dulay, Burt, and Krashen. Then, the errors found are classified into syntactical errors based on Politzer and Romirez’ model as a guideline. The researcher applies randomly technique to get a representative sample, there are 6 theses as the sample. The findings of analysis show that the totals of syntactical errors are 387 sentences. The analysis found that there are four types of syntactical errors which used; they are Omision156, Addition 46, Misformation 114 and Misordering 19. The most dominant type of syntactical errors made in graduate students’ thesis is omission. Keywords:Syntactical Errors, Thesis.

Abstract

This study is aimed to analyze what the feminism varieties and how is the feminism in patriarchal reflected by main character Annisa in Perempuan Berkalung Sorban movie. This study is conducted with the descriptive qualitative method. The source of the data of the analysis is Perempuan Berkalung Sorban movie and the data are linguistic feature that are format as sentence by the main character. The data were collected by the documentary technique and the instrument is documentary sheets. The study results that (1) The main character reflected the feminism varieties. Based on the Feminist Thought book there are three varieties of feminism. Liberal feminism, Radical feminism and Socialist Marxists feminism. The main character reflected the three kinds of feminism such as Liberal Feminism, Radical feminism, Socialist Marxist Feminism. The main character Annisa is reflected most dominant appeared Radical feminism. Annisa is powerful and rebellious women. She wants to get the equal with the man without any discrimination gender. (2) The feminism in patriarchal society in reflected is Annisa to represent the women movement to against all of objection toward woman. The each utterances of Annisa represent she is against all forms of women discrimination in private patriarchy and public patriarchy. The research focuses on the analysis of feminism in patriarchal society in the main character can be interpreted through Annisa as a main character and sentences of the movie and it is found of the main character reflected the feminism in a patriarchal society.Keywords:feminism, varieties, patriarchal, main character, movie.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study deals with speech function in ‘Yeah Mahasiswa’ tweets. The research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected from the twitter account of Yeah Mahasiswa which chosen purposively. The findings of the research show that there are 105 clauses which consist of 4 speech functions, Statement (84), Question (11), Command (6), andOffer (4). The most dominant type of speech function used by Yeah Mahasiswa wasstatement because it tended to give information in its interaction through its tweets. The occurrence of the dominant speech function due to the context of situation, covering field, tenor and mode.   Keyword: Speech Function, Twitter

Abstract

This study discusses indirect descriptive expressions in the poem The Charge of the Light Brigade by Alfred, Lord Tennyson use semiotics theory of Riffaterre. This study aims to, (a) to describe the kinds of indirect descriptive expressions used in the poetry The Charge of the Light Brigade by Alfred, Lord Tennyson, (b) to explain the realization of indirect descriptive expressions realized in the poetry The Charge of the Light Brigade by Alfred, Lord Tennyson, (c) to explain the reasons of indirect descriptive expressions realized in the ways they are. This research is a qualitative descriptive study. The data source used in this study is in the form of words, phrases, clauses and sentences from the poem. The results of this study, namely there are 8 Metaphors and 7 Metonymy in displacing of meaning; 6 Ambiguous, 2 Contradictions, and 4 Nonsense in distorting of meaning; 16 rhymes, 12 enjambments, and 6 typography in creating of meaning. Keywords: Indirect descriptive expressions; Semiotic; Poetry

Abstract

The study deals with the use of connotative meaning especially inDarwisTereLiye’s quotes. In this study the researcher focuses on the three maintypes of connotative meaning namely positive connotative, negative connotativeand neutral connotative. The data that support this study are obtained by applyingdescriptive qualitative method by selecting and then analyzing some quotes ofDarwisTereLiye on facebook. The findings show that there are three types ofconnotative meaning in DarwisTereLiye’s quotes. There are positive connotative,negative connotative and neutral connotative. Positive connotative as thedominant type that found in this research.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study deals with the types of deixis in Raja Campur Sari of Didi Kempot’s Song. The objective of this study are to describe the types of deixis that are used in Raja Campur Sari of Didi Kempot’s song, finding out the dominant types, and finding out why the type of deixis is dominantly used in Raja Campur Sari of Didid Kempot’s Song. This study applied descriptive qualitative method. The data of this study were taken from VCD of Raja Campur Sari of Didi Kempot’s song. There were 10 song lyrics taken as the samples. The findings of this study show that there are five types of deixis were found in Raja Campur Sari of Didi Kempot’s song, there are person deixis 33.7%, spatial deixis 16.6%, temporal deixis 16.4%, discourse deixis 20.3% and social deixis 13%. The most dominant type of deixis found is person deixis. Person deixis is dominantly used because hemostly wrote her own experiences into the song lyrics. Keyword: Pragmatics, Deixis, Song

Abstract

The title of this thesis is Woman Struggle in Cahaya Cinta Pesantren Novel by Ira Madan. This study aims to analyzing how is the woman struggle for her ambition of  Marshila Silalahi  in term of hierarchy of needs that she had faced. The source of the data of the analysis is Cahaya Cinta Pesantren novel and the data are the linguistic features that are formed as sentences by the first woman main character. The writer applies the theories from Maslow (1943) about the hierarchy of needs. Based on its form, Maslow was devided the struggle into 5 stage model, they are (1) Physiological needs, (2) Safety needs, (3) Love and Belonging needs, (4) Esteem needs, (5) Self-actualization. The writer devided the data based on each types of self-actualization by Maslow in Hierarchy of needs. Struggle is related to subconscious mind phychologically, the female character is potrayed to reach her ambition with personal reasons to get something in her struggle. The sources of data of this research are any statements, dialogues and actions that prove or describe the self-actualization of a woman struggle in the novel Cahaya Cinta Pesantren (2014) by Ira Madan. Finally the struggles in each types of selfactualization can be interpreted through Marshila Silalahi sentences of the novel and it is found that hierarchy of needs reflect woman struggle.

Abstract

ABSTRACT   This study deals with Repression and Displacement of Main Character in Elizabeth Gilbert’s Novel Eat, Pray, Love. The objectives of this study were to find out the causing of repression and the displacement in the novel. This study was limited to analyze Liz as the main character. This study applied descriptive qualitative method. The data were taken from Elizabeth Gilbert’s novel Eat, Pray, Love. The findings indicated that Liz got repressions which are triggered by two factors; the crisis of self identity and marriage conflict. And then the displacement that occurred to the main character after getting repressions were losing faith about marriage, disorder eating habit, and converting new orientation of spiritual life.   Keyword        :  repression, displacement, character, novel

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study deals with realization of speech function in cigarette’s slogans. The objectives of the study were to identify the types of speech function realized in cigarette’s slogans, to identify the types of mood realized in cigarette’s slogans, and to find the most dominant type of speech function and mood in cigarette’s slogans. The data were cigarette’s slogans which were taken from advertising media like television, internet or billboard. There were found 38 slogans which consist of Speech Functions. Based on the analysis, there were only three speech functions found in the slogans. They were statement, question and command. The most dominant speech function used was statement. There were three moods found, they were declarative, interrogative and imperative. The most dominant type of mood was declarative.   Key words : speech function, mood, slogan
