Abstract

The availability of quality feed at efficient production costs remains a major challenge in catfish (Pangasius sp.) aquaculture, given that feed accounts for the largest proportion of total aquaculture production costs. This study aimed to evaluate the physical characteristics of fish meal and formulated feed produced from processed fish waste, as well as to analyze the growth performance of catfish fed this formulated diet over a 10-week rearing period. Fish meal was produced from waste materials including heads, bones, skin, and residual flesh through washing, steaming, drying, grinding, and sieving stages, then formulated into pelleted feed together with rice bran, tofu dregs, tapioca flour, and vitamins. The results showed that the fish meal was grayish-brown in color, dense yet slightly coarse in texture, sufficiently dry, and suitable for use as a feed raw material. The resulting formulated feed was in pellet form, stable in water, and suitable for feeding to fish. Over the 10-week rearing period using this feed, the average body weight of catfish increased from 4.90 g to 8.90 g (absolute weight gain of 4.00 g; specific growth rate/SGR of 6.63% per week), total length increased from 9.20 cm to 11.09 cm, and standard length increased from 7.34 cm to 9.26 cm, with the SL/TL ratio remaining relatively stable in the range of 0.76-0.87. These results indicate that formulated feed derived from fish waste is able to adequately support catfish growth, while also offering an economical and sustainable alternative for small-scale fish farmers.

Abstract

Pangasius sp. is one of the leading freshwater aquaculture commodities in Indonesia with high economic value and growing market demand. The success of Pangasius culture is largely determined by optimal growth performance, which in practice is often hampered even when farmers provide artificial feed. This study aims to examine the factors inhibiting the growth of Pangasius sp. fed artificial feed in pond culture systems and to formulate appropriate management solutions. A descriptive qualitative method with a literature review approach was applied to national scientific articles published within the last ten years. The results indicate that growth-inhibiting factors include low quality and digestibility of artificial feed, fluctuating water quality (temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, and ammonia), stocking densities that exceed pond carrying capacity, inadequate feeding management, and pest or disease attacks. Recommended solutions include supplementing feed with exogenous enzymes (papain and protease) to improve protein digestibility, applying biopore and biofloc technologies to stabilize water quality, adjusting stocking density and feeding frequency to growth stages, utilizing probiotics and photosynthetic bacteria, and diversifying natural and local feed sources. Integrated application of these solutions is expected to improve feed efficiency, growth rate, and survival of Pangasius sp. in pond culture systems.

Abstract

Commercial fish feed is generally relatively expensive, thus necessitating the development of alternative feed sources based on locally abundant, affordable, and easily accessible raw materials, such as fish waste from traditional markets. This study aims to evaluate the quality of fish feed pellets produced from the processing of fish waste as an economical, environmentally friendly, and sustainable alternative to support the management of aquatic resources. The research was conducted on April 8, 2026, at the Laboratory of the Faculty of Science and Technology, Nias University, utilizing a quantitative descriptive methodology. The pellet manufacturing process involved washing, boiling, drying, and grinding fish waste into flour, which was then mixed with rice bran, soybean pulp, tapioca flour as a binder, fish vitamins, and water until homogeneous, before being molded and dried. The results demonstrated that the resulting pellets possessed favorable physical characteristics: cylindrical shape, grayish-brown coloration, dense texture, a distinctive fish aroma that was not rancid, moderate buoyancy lasting 2–4 minutes, and stability in water for approximately 30 minutes. These characteristics indicate that fish waste has the potential to be utilized as a raw material for feed, capable of enhancing feed efficiency while simultaneously reducing nutrient loss in cultivation media. Furthermore, converting fish waste into pellets adds value to fishery by-products, mitigates environmental pollution, lowers production costs, and supports the implementation of circular and blue economy principles in aquatic resource management. Consequently, fish waste-based pellets have the potential to serve as a high-quality, cost-effective, and sustainable local alternative, fostering increased productivity in aquaculture and the effective management of aquatic resources in Indonesia.

Abstract

Intensive fish farming faces challenges such as disease, low feed efficiency, and declining water quality. This article aims to examine the effect of adding prebiotics and probiotics to feed on the growth performance of farmed fish through a literature review of various scientific journals. The results of the review indicate that probiotics improve gut microbiota balance, digestive enzyme activity, growth, and feed efficiency, while prebiotics support the growth of beneficial bacteria and boost the fish’s immune system. The combination of both (synbiotics) provides better results than using them separately. Thus, the addition of prebiotics and probiotics has the potential to be an effective and environmentally friendly nutritional strategy to improve the growth, health, and productivity of farmed fish.

Abstract

Feed is the primary component in the culture of striped catfish (Pangasius hypophthalmus) because it accounts for most production costs. Therefore, alternative feed ingredients that are nutritious, economical, and sustainable are needed. Fermented tofu dregs represent one promising alternative feed ingredient. This study aimed to analyze the effect of fermented tofu dregs on feed efficiency and growth performance of striped catfish based on published scientific studies. The research employed a literature review with a comparative analysis approach. Secondary data were collected from national and international scientific publications published between 2016 and 2026 through Google Scholar, Garuda, Scopus, DOAJ, and Crossref. Selected studies were screened using inclusion and exclusion criteria and analyzed descriptively by comparing growth performance, feed efficiency, Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR), Specific Growth Rate (SGR), and survival rate. The synthesis showed that fermented tofu dregs generally improved feed nutritional quality, enhanced digestibility, promoted fish growth, increased feed efficiency, reduced FCR values, and maintained high survival rates. However, their effectiveness was influenced by the type of fermentation microorganism, fermentation duration, feed formulation, substitution level, and culture conditions. Therefore, fermented tofu dregs have strong potential as an economical, environmentally friendly, and sustainable alternative feed ingredient to support striped catfish aquaculture.

Abstract

Water quality is one of the most important environmental factors affecting the growth and survival of catfish (Clarias sp.). A decline in water quality due to the accumulation of uneaten feed, fish feces, and organic matter can increase ammonia concentrations and reduce dissolved oxygen levels, thereby inhibiting fish growth. This study aimed to analyze the effect of polluted water conditions on the growth of catfish during a 30-day rearing period. The treatments consisted of clean water as the control (P1) and polluted water (P2). The observed parameters included absolute length gain, absolute weight gain, and survival rate (SR). The results showed that catfish reared in clean water exhibited better growth than those reared in polluted water. Fish in the control treatment achieved an average length gain of 4.2 cm and a weight gain of 28.5 g, while fish in polluted water showed a length gain of 3.1 cm and a weight gain of 21.4 g. The survival rate was also higher in the control treatment (96%) than in the polluted water treatment (90%). These findings indicate that poor water quality can inhibit the growth of catfish, although this species is still able to survive under suboptimal environmental conditions. Therefore, proper water quality management is essential to support optimal growth and improve the productivity of catfish culture.

Abstract

Catfish (Clarias sp.) is one of the freshwater aquaculture commodities with high economic value and increasing market demand in Indonesia. However, intensive cultivation is often faced with problems of decreased growth performance, low feed efficiency, and high risk of disease infection due to high stocking density. One strategy widely developed to overcome these problems is the application of probiotics in feed and culture media. This article aims to systematically review the role of probiotics on growth, feed efficiency, immune response, and water quality in catfish culture based on a literature study of various national and international scientific publications. The method used is a narrative literature review of publications from 2008-2025 obtained through Google Scholar, Sinta, and indexed international journal databases. The results show that probiotic application, whether from the genus Bacillus, Lactobacillus, or multistrain combinations, consistently improves specific growth rate, reduces feed conversion ratio (FCR), increases survival rate, improves immunological parameters such as phagocytic activity and leukocyte levels, and maintains water quality by suppressing ammonia levels. The appropriate dose and strain type of probiotics are determining factors for application effectiveness.
