Abstract

The Bangka Belitung Islands, recognized as one of Indonesia’s key capture fisheries production centers, also possess substantial potential for the production of economically valuable aquatic invertebrates. Pangkalpinang City, serving as the commercial hub of the province, hosts a major trading center for aquatic invertebrates alongside other fishery commodities at the Pangkalpinang Fish Market. This study identified the types of aquatic invertebrates traded at the Pangkalpinang Fish Market. The species of aquatic invertebrates recorded during the survey conducted in November 2025 were squid (Loligo sp.), whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei), mud crab (Scylla serrata), blood cockle (Anadara granosa), and local clam (Polymesoda erosa). Aquatic invertebrate species that were not found during the survey included the gonggong snail (Strombus canarium), cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis / Sepia pharaonis), blue swimming crab (Portunus pelagicus), and mantis shrimp (Harpiosquilla raphidea).

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the success of domestication of Palapinang fish (Desmopuntius pentazona) originating from wild populations through rearing in controlled containers. The observed parameters included adaptation to artificial feed, survival rate, growth performance, and water quality during the rearing period. Domestication is an important effort to reduce pressure on wild populations caused by intensive harvesting for the ornamental fish trade and habitat degradation due to post-tin mining activities on Bangka Island. A total of 30 fish with an average initial body weight of 0.85 g were reared for 30 days in a 30 L fiber tank containing 15 L of water sourced from their natural habitat. A descriptive method was applied, focusing on changes in feeding behavior and physiological adaptation during the domestication process. The results showed a survival rate of 60%, largely influenced by initial stress during transfer from the wild to the rearing system. The specific growth rate reached 2.68%/day with an absolute weight gain of 1.05 g, indicating effective utilization of artificial feed after the adaptation period. Adaptation to artificial feed occurred within 3–5 days, with feed consumption increasing steadily to more than 80% by the third week. Water quality remained within optimal ranges, with temperatures of 26–27°C, pH of 5–6, and dissolved oxygen of 8.0 mg/L, supporting physiological stability during the rearing period. Overall, the results indicate that Palapinang fish have strong potential for domestication and development in aquaculture systems as a sustainable conservation strategy.

Abstract

Lamongan Regency is one of the regions with significant potential for aquaculture development in East Java. This study aims to map the potential of aquaculture in Glagah, Turi, and Karangbinangun Districts as a basis for sustainable aquaculture development planning. The methods used included primary data collection through field observations and interviews with fish farmers, as well as secondary data obtained from the Lamongan Regency Fisheries Office. The research stages consisted of identifying geographical conditions, aquaculture land area, leading commodities, number of aquaculture households, and cultivation systems applied in each district. The results showed that Glagah District has high potential for brackish water aquaculture with milkfish and vannamei shrimp as the main commodities. Turi District is dominated by freshwater aquaculture such as catfish and tilapia using traditional systems, while Karangbinangun District has developed semi-intensive to intensive aquaculture systems. The main constraint faced by farmers is the limited availability of production inputs, particularly subsidized fertilizers, which increases production costs. In conclusion, aquaculture potential mapping is essential as a foundation for policy formulation and the development of more effective and sustainable aquaculture in Lamongan Regency.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the meristic characteristics of snakehead fish (Channa striata) collected from freshwater ecosystems in Gunungsitoli, North Sumatra Province. The research was conducted from November 2025 to January 2026 using five specimens of snakehead fish as samples. A descriptive quantitative method was applied in this study. The observed meristic characters included the number of dorsal, pectoral, pelvic, anal, and caudal fin rays, as well as the number of lateral line scales, transverse body scales, and scales around the caudal peduncle. Observations were carried out directly in the laboratory using optical instruments to ensure accuracy. The results indicated that the meristic characteristics of Channa striata from Gunungsitoli waters were relatively uniform among individuals, although slight variations were observed in some characters. These variations were still within the normal range and consistent with previously reported descriptions of the species. The relative uniformity of meristic characters suggests that the environmental conditions of the study area support normal growth and development of snakehead fish. The findings of this study are expected to serve as baseline data for fisheries biology studies, resource management, and further research on the population structure of snakehead fish.

Abstract

The utilization of seluang fish (Brevibora cheeya) from the Jade River waters to date still relies on wild catches, so domestication efforts are needed to maintain population sustainability. This study aims to determine the level of domestication in Brevibora cheeya fish and become an effective solution to preserve local fish species and strengthen the existence of local fish. The research method used was a descriptive experiment conducted for 30 days at the Hatchery of Bangka Belitung University. Test samples of 21 fish from the Jade River were kept in containers with a filtration system and fed PF 800 pellets ad libitum. Parameters observed included growth in length, weight, survival rate, and water quality. The results showed that the domestication process had only reached level 2, where fish were able to adapt but growth was still relatively slow. The average length of fish increased from 4.42 cm to 4.68 cm and the average weight increased from 1 gram to 1.8 grams. The survival rate (SR) was recorded at 52%, with a relatively high Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR). Water quality factors, particularly an average temperature of 25.9°C and a pH of 6.10, were within the tolerance range, although suspected to be limiting factors for optimal growth.
