Abstract

This research aims to illustrate the capacity of flipped learning to revitalize the classroom atmosphere and promote increased levels of student engagement and enthusiasm within the contemporary post-pandemic educational setting. Employing a mixed-methods approach, it includes surveys and interviews with 100 students from Indonesian universities. The study aims to uncover the benefits and challenges of implementing flip learning in non-English department English classrooms and explore how students perceive this approach. The intervention involved delivering pre-recorded lectures and activities for students to complete before class, followed by in-person activities and discussions to reinforce learning. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, while qualitative data underwent thematic analysis. The results indicate that implementing flip learning for non-English department students at the university level offers several benefits, including enhanced student engagement and motivation, improved short-term learning outcomes, increased student-teacher interaction, more opportunities for problem-solving practice, collaborative learning experiences, and flexible learning pace. However, challenges like increased workload, group activities, limited technology access, and teacher adaptation to new teaching methods may arise. Despite these challenges, the benefits of flip learning outweigh the drawbacks, making it a viable approach for non-English department university students studying English. These findings lay the groundwork for future research to address workload management, effective collaboration, technology accessibility, teacher support, long-term learning assessment, and implementing flipped learning in diverse educational contexts.

Abstract

Purpose – This scientific paper aims to discuss a special approach of character education in elementary school, which covers both its urgency and implementation. Methodology – The data collection was carried out through document studies, observations, and in-depth interviews with teachers, parents, and socio-cultural experts. The data were analyzed qualitatively using pedagogical theories and Bourdeau’s theory of social action. Findings – The result showed that intensive character education is essential for elementary school students, since they are still at their golden age, which would promote the effectiveness of its implementation. Character education, for elementary school students, can be implemented based on the concept of Catur Guru, including developing the students’ character to respect; Guru Rupaka (parents), Guru Pengajian (school teacher), Guru Wisesa (government), and Guru Swadyaya (God Almighty). Significance – These four dimensions of Guru (the teachers of life) must be introduced synergistically in order to build the character of elementary school students in their house, school, society, and also their living environment. Character education was also expected to direct the students’ creativity, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration, toward kindness and peace. Other implications for educational purposes were also discussed.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the learning experiences of biology students, particularly within the realms of face-to-face and online learning, and to identify solutions for enhancing the quality of education. The research methodology employed is the Convergent Mixed Methods Design. The participants in the study encompassed 43 twelfth-grade students specializing in the natural sciences (IPA) and three biology teachers. Data collection was conducted through questionnaires, interviews, and observations, followed by a comprehensive analysis employing both quantitative and qualitative descriptive techniques. The research findings reveal that the primary challenges faced by students in the realm of biology education include difficulties in recalling scientific terminology, inadequate preparation prior to lessons, limited engagement with everyday biological issues, struggles in time management for studying, a lack of focus during learning, and difficulties in comprehending biological concepts. Over half of the students exhibit a preference for face-to-face learning, though online learning and hybrid modes are also popular. Among the Learning Management Systems (LMS) in use, Google Classroom stands out as the most frequently employed. The principal sources of internet access for the students include home Wi-Fi, tethering from the devices of parents, siblings, or friends, and internet cafes. While internet connectivity at school is generally available, the issue of unstable signals persists. The research outcomes carry significant implications for the development of more effective strategies in biology education, such as interactive approaches, the integration of real-world contexts, and the augmentation of digital infrastructure. Additionally, external factors and social considerations necessitate careful consideration in the development of comprehensive teaching strategies.
