Abstract

Digital literacy is becoming a crucial skill for managing information effectively and credibly in the digital era. Podcasts, as an increasingly popular audio medium, have significant potential to enhance students' digital literacy. This study aims to analyze the need for podcasts as a medium to improve digital literacy among 20 English Education students through a qualitative case study. Data were collected through questionnaires and analyzed qualitatively. The results show that most respondents are familiar with podcasts and consider them important for digital literacy. Although the majority have never created a podcast, they expressed a need for training. Almost all respondents reported an increase in digital literacy after listening to educational podcasts. The main obstacles in podcast production include a lack of interest, technical knowledge, and limited resources. In conclusion, podcasts have significant potential to enhance students' digital literacy. Integrating podcasts into higher education can enrich the learning experience and develop critical skills in managing digital information. Further research is needed to measure the broader impact of podcasts and to develop integrated podcasts in higher education, as well as to provide training to improve podcast production quality. Comparative studies between types of podcast content and the long-term impact of podcasts on students' digital literacy and professional readiness are also necessary.

Abstract

Language serves as a communication tool involving verbal and written symbols to express thoughts and feelings. In the context of the Kuala Tungkal community, the use of the local Malay dialect alongside Indonesian and English creates an intriguing phenomenon of code-mixing. This study aims to analyze code-mixing in the Instagram captions of nine accounts focused on Kuala Tungkal: @hitstungkal, @tungkalbecerite, @tungkal_barometer, @tungkalvoice, @kuliner_tungkal, @tungkal_fyp, @tungkal_kite_punye, @kabarkualatungkal, and @wisatatanjabbarat_. Using a descriptive qualitative approach along with sociolinguistic theory and Muysken's (2000) concept of code-mixing, which includes insertion, alternation, and congruent lexicalization, this research finds that this language mixing is influenced by globalization and access to social media. The findings aim to provide a deeper understanding of language interaction within the local community and its impact on cultural identity and communication in the modern era.

Abstract

This research aims to read the propagandist messages conveyed in two sacred moments that occurred during the Inauguration of the 8th President and Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia. These two sacred moments occurred when Muzani, as the Chairman of the MPR RI, opened the session and when Prabowo Subianto, as president, delivered a state speech. The sacredness of the two moments was due to the presence of other countries that were not entirely pro-Palestine; some were neutral or even against. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method by utilizing Van Dijk's critical discourse perspective as its study. The results of this study state that the two sacred moments place the other countries present as subjects that are hegemonized in terms of space and time. The speeches delivered in the two moments tend to be humanist political propaganda in responding to the conflict in Palestine. The conclusion in this study is that language is a tool to control, shape perceptions, and influence society through mastery of certain contexts, in this case regarding the concepts of space and time.

Abstract

The use of Indonesian, regional languages and foreign languages on business signs in Bandar Lampung shows language contestation. This language contest involves 14 languages, of these 14 languages there are languages that are dominant and those that are not. This research aims to map and analyze language distribution and describe language contestation through language use patterns that appear on business signboards. The observation method using photography techniques was used to collect data. A total of 300 photos of business nameplates along the main roads in 4 sub-districts (Teluk Betung Selatan, Teluk Betung Timur, Teluk Betung Utara, and Teluk Betung Barat) were taken as research objects. First, the data is grouped based on the pattern (monolingual, bilingual, and multilingual) then the grouped patterns are analyzed based on the type of business. Second, we look at the use of Lampung language for types of business. Research findings show that Indonesian is more dominant than other languages in monolingual and bilingual patterns, while in multilingual patterns Indonesian takes precedence over English. For the Lampung language, although it only appears on a handful of business boards, local identity still appears, especially in typical food and clothing businesses and in the names of tourist attractions. The social implication of this research is that the people of Lampung still have the awareness to preserve and reflect Lampung's cultural identity through the businesses they build.

Abstract

Idioms are a representation of the cognition of the speaker community. Idioms are formed from a natural background of knowledge so that they are universal in nature. The main objective of this study is to show the role of cognitive semantic studies in forming Indonesian idioms that represent the experiences of their speakers. This study answers the formulation of problems related to the formation and meaning of idioms. Research data were collected by utilizing various written data as primary data and various other data that can support this study. All of these data were analyzed using various language analysis techniques, such as insert, expand, change form, disappear, replace, and reverse. To ensure the data obtained, triangulation of sources and methods was used. The results of the study showed that through the constructional scheme, frame analysis, and conceptual integration used, it appears that the concepts used by Indonesian speakers in their cognition tend to involve physical (material) or form. Indonesian speakers have very good cognitive abilities in describing meaning through word pairing (idioms).

Abstract

Hedging is an important rhetorical strategy in political discourse, used to show a degree of confidence and build a positive image of the leader, especially in US Presidential speeches from 1993 to 2021. The purpose of this study is to analyze the role of hedging in building a positive image and understand the variations of its use based on the political context and audience. The method used is a qualitative literature study, with secondary data analysis in the form of speech transcripts and related literature. The main findings show that the use of hedging varies between presidents, where Bill Clinton and Barack Obama use it to maintain credibility and reinforce commitments, while Donald Trump uses it less, but still in a diplomatic context. The research conclusion confirms that hedging has an important role in building a positive image of the leader but should be used with caution so as not to be misinterpreted as uncertainty.
