Abstract

Gastrodiplomacy is a popular instrument in today's cultural diplomacy. This gastronomic diplomacy was first implemented by Thailand through the "Global Thai" program, which successfully introduced Thai cuisine and culture to the international community. Among ASEAN countries, the Philippines is one that currently engages in gastronomic diplomacy, led by adobo as a staple dish. This study examines the Philippines' efforts to conduct gastronomic diplomacy through the lens of gastrodiplomacy theory. This study uses a qualitative method and draws on a literature review of journal articles, books, news, and social media. In 2025, the Philippines will intensify its efforts in conducting gastronomic diplomacy, especially with countries with which it has established close relations, such as South Korea, Vietnam, Bangladesh, and Australia. This gastronomic diplomacy is referred to as "Adobo Diplomacy" because adobo is the primary food promoted by the Philippine government in diplomatic contexts. The results of this study indicate that the Philippines' gastronomic diplomacy efforts align with the practical methods identified by Rockower (2020) following a literature review of previous studies.

Abstract

Masjid Pathok Negoro Dongkelan is one of the kagungan dalem mosques belonging to the Yogyakarta Sultanate, constructed as part of the spiritual and administrative structure of the Kraton’s territory. This study examines the architectural form and distinctive characteristics of Masjid Pathok Negoro Dongkelan using a comparative method with other Pathok Negoro mosques as well as the Great Mosque of Kauman (Masjid Gedhe Kauman). The findings indicate that Masjid Dongkelan possesses unique architectural features, including a fully enclosed veranda, a covered pulpit with a curved roof adorned with ornaments symbolizing the Sultanate, and two pawestren (women’s prayer spaces) that are not found in the other comparative mosques. In addition to its distinctive architectural form, Masjid Dongkelan also holds significant socio-historical functions, serving as a center of community resistance during the colonial period and as a space for religious activities, education, and cultural preservation. The existence of Masjid Pathok Negoro Dongkelan represents adaptive Javanese-Islamic architecture that responds to environmental conditions and social needs, while at the same time maintaining traditional identity and its close association with the authority of the Yogyakarta Sultanate.

Abstract

The dissolution of the Koninklijk Nederlands-Indisch Leger (KNIL) following the recognition of Indonesian sovereignty created serious problems for KNIL soldiers from Ambon, particularly with regard to their legal status, security, and place of demobilization. The unstable political and security situation in Eastern Indonesia in the early 1950s, combined with tensions between the Netherlands and the Republik Indonesia Serikat, further intensified the uncertainty surrounding the fate of former Ambonese KNIL soldiers. It was within this context that the Aponno Delegation emerged as a representative body advocating the interests of former Ambonese KNIL members who rejected demobilization within the territory of the Republic of the United States of Indonesia. This study aims to analyze the role and strategies of the Aponno Delegation in opposing the planned relocation of former Ambonese KNIL soldiers to the territory of the Republic of the United States of Indonesia and in advocating for their demobilization rights during the period 1950–1951. The research data were obtained from primary sources in the form of archival legal petitions submitted by the Aponno Delegation to the Dutch government, preserved at the Nationaal Archief, the Staatsblad van het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden, and reports from Dutch-language newspapers accessed through Delpher. Secondary sources, including books and scholarly articles, were used to strengthen the historical context and analysis. This research employs the historical method, encompassing the stages of heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. External and internal criticism were conducted to assess the authenticity and credibility of the sources, after which the data were interpreted chronologically and contextually. The findings indicate that the Aponno Delegation played a significant role in the demobilization process of former Ambonese KNIL soldiers, particularly through legal and political strategies that influenced the policy leading to their transfer to the Netherlands in 1951

Abstract

The film JUNG_E (2023), a South Korean film by Yeon Sang-ho, presents a distinctive representation of motherhood through the transformation of the maternal body into a posthuman entity. This study aims to analyze how maternal identity is constructed, weakened, and instrumentalized through technology within the context of future capitalism and militarism. Employing a qualitative-descriptive approach, the research examines the separation of the biological body, memory, and maternal affect as they are reconstituted in the form of artificial intelligence. The theoretical framework integrates concepts of performativity and precarity/vulnerability proposed by Judith Butler, feminist posthumanism by Rosi Braidotti, affect theory by Silvan Tomkins, as well as Korean sinpa studies, to explore how maternal suffering, sacrifice, and emotional depth between mother and child are exploited through melodramatic structures and science fiction narratives. The analysis reveals that motherhood in JUNG_E is no longer positioned as an ethical relationship but rather as an affective resource that is systematically exploited. Maternal affect is programmed, commodified, and detached from the autonomy of the maternal subject, thereby exposing an ethical crisis of motherhood in the posthuman era. This study argues that JUNG_E does not celebrate posthumanism; instead, it offers a feminist critique of the exploitation of maternal bodies and emotions by technology, the state, and the logic of capitalism.

Abstract

The film Crypto Boy (2023), directed by Shady El-Hamus has received many interesting reviews from film critics. This film raises issues about crypto investment, which is currently popular among modern society. Cryptocurrency is digital money used for online payments, and crypto transactions are always conducted through a system called “blockchain”. Blockchain is a secure and organized pathway that ensures every crypto transaction is properly recorded and protected. This film tells the story of Amir’s life as a courier who dreams of success through the world of cryptocurrency. In his journey to explore the world of crypto, Amir eventually fell victim to a crypto investment scam. The various challenges that arose from this situation contributed to the changes in Amir’s personality. The research question is: How are the personality dynamics of the main character in the film Crypto Boy (2023) by Shady El-Hamus? The purpose of this research is to describe the personality dynamics of the main character, Amir. The method used in this research is a descriptive qualitative method. The theory used is Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory of the id, ego, and superego. That psychoanalytic theory is also supported by William McDougall’s opinion, which discusses basic human instincts. The results of this research show that there are changes in Amir’s personality traits, namely from id to ego, id to ego then to superego, id to superego, and id to superego then to ego. Personality changes in the main character can make a film interesting to watch. This is because these changes can present an emotional journey, present meaningful conflicts, reflect human reality, and strengthen the film’s moral message. This research presents a deeper understanding of the personality changes of the main character in the film Crypto Boy (2023)..

Abstract

The demonstrations that took place in Indonesia from late August 2025 to early September 2025 attracted global attention and were reported by Arabic-language international media. News media can produce meaning and shape international public perception in their representation of demonstrations in Indonesia. This study aims to analyze the representation of the demonstrations in Indonesia in Arabic-language international media, namely Al-Jazeera Mubasher, Al-Araby Al-Jadid, Al-Arabiya, and BBC Arabic. This study uses a qualitative approach with Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis method combined with van Dijk's ideological square. The research data consists of four news articles selected based on the focus of the issue in the news headline, namely demonstrators, the government, victims, and the general situation. The results of the study show significant differences between the four media outlets in their representation of demonstrations in Indonesia, in line with their ideologies and interests in the global public sphere. Al-Arabiya and Al-Araby Al-Jadid tend to represent demonstrations as a threat to stability and the economy. BBC Arabic and Al-Jazeera Mubasher place greater emphasis on social justice, human rights, and the legitimacy of the people's demands.

Abstract

This study examines how Indonesia’s Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) Program is represented in Arabic language media, focusing on the construction of ideology and the framing of public policy within discourse. As a quick-win initiative of President Prabowo Subianto’s administration in 2025, the MBG Program aims to improve nutrition and human capital quality, yet it has sparked controversy and drawn significant international media attention. This research addresses a gap in existing studies by critically analyzing the representation of Indonesian social policy in Arab media. The study employs a descriptive qualitative method using Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), encompassing three dimensions: text, discourse practice, and social practice. The primary data consist of 25 online news articles in Arabic from the Middle East, North Africa, and Southeast Asia (January–October 2025). The analysis centers on two discourse orientations: pro (supportive) and contra (critical). The findings reveal a clear discursive dichotomy: 16 articles with a contra orientation highlight cases of mass food poisoning and implementation failures, while 9 pro-oriented articles frame the MBG Program as an ambitious, humanitarian initiative aligned with the “Golden Generation 2045” narrative. The CDA results underscore the role of Arab media as an instrument of symbolic diplomacy that constructs Indonesia’s image based on each outlet’s ideological stance and interpretive position.

Abstract

The term “foolish” often appears in literary works and social interactions, but it is rarely the focus of academic study. This study departs from Md. Akbar Ali Biswas's (2007) Life and Works of Ibn al-Jawzi with Special Reference to His Book Akhbar al-Hamqa wa al-Mughaffilin, which asserts that the theme of foolishness in Ibn al-Jauzi's work is universal because it can be understood across cultures and eras. However, this study has not examined its relevance to the phenomenon of modern human foolishness. Based on this gap, this study aims to reexamine the forms of stupidity in Akhbar al-Hamqa and assess its relevance to the phenomenon of modern stupidity. This study uses a qualitative literature review method with primary data in the form of the text Akhbar al-Hamqa wa al-Mughafallin and secondary data in the form of literature related to the topic. The analysis was conducted using Dietrich Bonhoeffer's Modern Stupidity theory. The results show that the forms of stupidity in the text bear substantial similarities to the phenomenon of modern stupidity, especially in interpreting stupidity as a loss of moral consciousness. Approximately 12.6% of the stories are still relevant to the modern context. This confirms that stupidity is timeless but always influenced by social and cultural contexts.

Abstract

Snouck Hurgronje was an Orientalist who had a different view from the colonial government regarding Indonesian independence. Snouck Hurgronje was always outspoken about the situation and dared to take action. This study discusses the views of Dutch and Flemish newspapers, namely Nieuwe Rotterdamsche Courant, Algemeen Handelsblad, and De Standaard, in their December 7 and 8, 1928 editions, regarding Snouck Hurgronje's criticism of Koloniale  Vraagstukken  Van  Heden  En  Morgen  (1928) by Hendrikus Colijn, an anti-revolutionary official. Snouck Hurgronje’s criticism of the Dutch government was viewed negatively. This study uses historical methods through the process of topic selection, source collection, verification (historical criticism, source validity), interpretation (analysis and synthesis), and historiography. The results show that Snouck Hurgronje could be rejected when his opinions conflicted with colonial political interests. The Dutch media's criticism of Snouck Hurgronje in 1928 reflected a political position that sought to maintain a way of thinking that was in line with that of the Dutch government.

Abstract

This study examines the 49th anniversary speech of the Green March (Masirat Al-Hadraa) as an ideological instrument within the political framework of the Kingdom of Morocco. The research reveals that the historical narrative of the Green March is reproduced not merely as collective memory, but as a strategic mechanism to consolidate monarchical legitimacy and assert territorial sovereignty over Western Sahara. Utilizing a qualitative methodology grounded in Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), the findings demonstrate that King Mohammed VI’s discourse serves three primary functions: first, reinforcing the monarchy’s historical-religious and institutional authority amidst domestic and regional political pressures; second, reconstructing a Moroccan national identity that is inherently tied to the territorial integrity of Western Sahara; and third, neutralizing oppositional narratives specifically from the Polisario Front and Algeria by framing Moroccan sovereignty as the sole legitimate political reality. This study contributes to the field of Arabic Discourse Studies by dissecting the discursive operations of power hegemony.
