Abstract

Abstract

This article discusses the domestic violence portrayed in Guy de Maupassant's short story La Confidence. The story centers on Marquise de Rennedou, who recounts to her friend, Baroness de Grangerie, her revenge for her husband's harsh treatment. The purpose of this study is to explain the depiction of patriarchal normalization that causes domestic violence, as viewed through the concept of power represented in La Confidence, along with the characters' efforts to resist such violence. This research employs a qualitative methodology using A.J. Greimas’s structural analysis theory, based on the actantial and functional schemes. The actantial scheme helps identify the functions and roles of characters and their relationships, while the functional scheme divides the plot to understand how the sequence of events influences the core of the short story related to the topic. Additionally, Michel Foucault's power relations theory is applied to examine how patriarchal societal norms influence men's behavior in the household, potentially leading to violence. The analysis ultimately reveals that the normalization of patriarchy in society, which elevates men's status, can be a cause of domestic violence, as illustrated in La Confidence.

Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the most popular albeit divisive topics up for debate today. On the one hand, die-hard proponents of AI believe that AI may one day come close to possessing human-level intelligence or even supersedes it (this view of AI is called strong AI) while on the other, some seem unconvinced of the promises of strong AI and prefer to believe in a weaker form of AI, an AI that might be able to do some functions humans assign to them or simulate basic level of human intelligence. This paper leans more toward the latter’s view. Using critical realism and neo-Aristotelian virtue ethics as its theoretical framework and abduction as a method of reasoning and argumentation, this paper argues that belief in strong AI is misguided and caused by a flaw in the theoretical framework used to understand reality and the human condition, particularly in its ontological and ethical assumptions. On this view, the position of strong AI could not be upheld, since human intelligence is made up of different forms of intelligence including logical/rational, emotional and moral intelligence that could not all be neatly reduced and understood as a form of computation. Key words: Human Intelligence; Artificial Intelligence; Strong AI; Weak AI; Critical Realism; Neo-Aristotelian Virtue Ethics

Abstract

This study discusses the Avos’ mentality character possessed by Russian society, which is implicitly portrayed through the film Ирония Судьбы Или С Лёдким Паром (Ironi Takdir, Atau Nikmati Saunamu) by Eldar Aleksandrovich Ryazanov (1976). The purpose of this research is to identify the forms of characteristics that represent the Avos’ mentality in the film. The research method used is expository and descriptive-critical analysis. Roland Barthes’ semiotic theory (denotation and connotation) is applied to uncover the signs in the film that implicitly reveal the characteristics of the Avos’ mentality. These signs indicate traits of the Avos’ mentality, such as a tendency to resist change, a preference for discussing the past rather than planning for the future, spontaneous actions, and reliance on luck or supernatural assistance.

Abstract

This paper examines the meaning of the song lyrics “Plastik Kita” by the music group Sore from the perspective of perennialism, particularly the metaphysical thought within the esoteric framework of Seyyed Hossein Nasr’s philosophy. The study focuses on the dimensions of meaning and symbolism in the lyrics as an expression of critique toward modernism. By employing a symbolic interpretive approach and esoteric epistemology, this paper explores how the song’s lyrics convey a spiritual message rooted in Nasr’s Divine metaphysical principles. Emphasis is placed on the critique of modern humanity’s detachment from its Divine source, as well as on the affirmation of the need to restore the sacred relationship between humanity, nature, and the Transcendent Reality. The analysis reveals that Plastik Kita serves as a contemporary expression of esoteric wisdom, articulating a profound critique of the spiritual crisis of the modern age.

Abstract

As a system of irrigation and traditional organization in Bali, Subak has functioned for centuries in collectively managing the equitable distribution of water resources. Its role as a socio-ecological institution is based on local values; it reflects the principles of collectivity and mutual cooperation, which align with the idea of socialism. However, agricultural modernization and the expansion of agrarian capitalism have caused a shift in collective work patterns within the Subak system. Based on this phenomenon, this article aims to examine these changes from a socialist perspective and their implications for the sustainability of the agricultural system in Bali. Using qualitative, literature-based methods, this study examines the socio-economic dynamics that influence Subak and the efforts of the Subak community to maintain this system amidst changing times. This study concludes with the finding that although the principle of collectivity within Subak still persists, market economic intervention has weakened the solidarity and independence of the Subak community.

Abstract

Idol survival shows are competition-based reality programs in which participants compete through various vocal, dance, and rap challenges to debut in a new idol group. In recent years, this genre has experienced a significant rise in popularity across East Asia. The phenomenon of idol survival shows has become a driving force behind the global popularity of Asian music, particularly within the realms of K-Pop, J-Pop, and C-Pop. This article explores the history, format, and factors contributing to the success of idol survival shows, as well as discusses their impact and controversies. The study finds that the phenomenon originated in South Korea, pioneered by programs such as Produce 101, and spread throughout East Asia through format adaptations. Its popularity is fueled by a unique format that involves active audience participation and interaction. While the genre has had positive impacts, this article also highlights ethical issues, including result manipulation scandals, participant exploitation, and unhealthy fan behavior.

Abstract

The Israel–Egypt border functions not merely as a geographic demarcation, but as a social, political, and cultural space imbued with symbolic meaning. Since its establishment in 1906 up to the construction of Project Hourglass in 2010, this border has shifted from a colonial administrative line to a fragile symbol of peace and a site of global securitization. This study employs a qualitative approach based on literature review and representational analysis, drawing on Stuart Hall’s representation theory as well as David Newman and Anssi Paasi’s concepts of borders in area studies. The findings reveal that the Israel-Egypt border is represented through four main dimensions: security, economy, politics-diplomacy, and humanitarianism. Project Hourglass materializes these representations, reflecting the tension between safeguarding national security and reinforcing separation. This analysis concludes that the Israel-Egypt border is not merely a geographic fact, but a multidimensional socio-political construct produced through media discourse, political narratives, and public perception, thereby contributing to a deeper understanding of how border representations shape regional dynamics and influence international relations.
