Abstract

Rice barns are agrarian vernacular architecture that reflects local knowledge, environmental adaptation, and the socio-cultural values of the supporting community. This study aims to examine the architectural characteristics of traditional rice barns in Lolo Gedang Village, Kerinci, through analysis of form, construction techniques, and cultural context. The method used is descriptive qualitative with inductive reasoning based on literature studies and analysis of the architectural elements of the barn as a cultural artifact. The results show that the Lolo Gedang rice barn is designed adaptively to highland climate conditions, especially in maintaining the quality of grain from humidity and pests, through a stilt system, the use of local wood materials, and a steep roof shape. In addition to its technical function, the rice barn also has social and symbolic meanings related to the customary system and food security of the Kerinci community. This study confirms that the rice barn does not only function as a storage building, but also as a representation of traditional agrarian architecture and culture.

Abstract

Indonesian and Mandarin Chinese have passive constructions. A systematic comparison of passive constructions in these two languages has not been conducted and is not based on corpus data. In this paper, we will compare passive constructions in these two languages based on word order, verb type, and agent. The data was taken from the Indonesian language corpus LCC (https://cqpweb.lancs.ac.uk) and the Mandarin language corpus BCC (https://bcc.blcu.edu.cn) . The data in this paper consists of passive sentences and other sentences that have the same meaning (synonyms) as passive sentences in Indonesian and Mandarin. From the data analysis, it was concluded that (1) the word order of passive constructions in Indonesian is more flexible than that in Mandarin, (2) static transitive verbs are used more frequently in passive constructions in Indonesian than in Mandarin, (3) agents in Indonesian passive constructions can be preceded by prepositions, while agents in Mandarin passive constructions are not preceded by prepositions, (4) agents in the form of pronouns are found more frequently in Mandarin passive constructions than in Indonesian passive constructions.

Abstract

Literary works are not only expressed in written form but also in audiovisual media such as films and television dramas, one of the most popular manifestations of the Korean Wave (Hallyu) being K-drama. This study aims to analyze the character development of Oh Yi Young in the drama Resident Playbook using a literary psychology approach by applying Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory on the dynamics of the id, ego, and superego. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method, with primary data consisting of dialogue, scenes, and interactions within the drama, and secondary data drawn from academic literature to support the analysis. The findings indicate that Oh Yi Young’s character development progresses from the dominance of the id, characterized by impulsivity and escapism in response to pressure, toward the emergence of the ego as reflected in the ability to assess reality rationally, and ultimately reaches the superego through ethical actions, professional commitment, and the internalization of moral values in emergency situations.

Abstract

The sentence-final particle ba is frequently used in Chinese, yet its pragmatic functions in bargaining contexts remain challenging for second-language learners. This study investigates the use of ba in negotiation dialogues from the Hànyǔ Jiàochéng textbook series (Units 1 and 2), focusing on its role in maintaining politeness, protecting face, and facilitating agreement between interlocutors. Using a qualitative approach, each instance of ba was identified and analysed with reference to speech act theory, politeness principles, and the concept of face-threatening acts. The findings reveal that bastrengthens the speaker’s illocutionary force while mitigating potential discourtesy, reducing interactional tension, and providing interlocutors with space to accept or negotiate proposals. These functions help achieve successful bargaining outcomes. The study contributes to understanding pragmatic competence in Chinese as a foreign language and offers pedagogical insights for teaching sentence-final particles in negotiation contexts.

Abstract

As one of the most popular forms of cultural production, film does not merely function as entertainment for society but also serves as a medium for highlighting social issues that have occurred or are currently unfolding within it. One Russian film that raises such social issues is Chelovek, kotoryj Udivil Vsekh (The Man Who Surprised Everyone), which implicitly addresses gender equality in modern Russian society. This study examines the representation of equality between women and men within the domestic sphere and how it relates to social realities in contemporary Russia. The theories of gender equilibrium and feminism, along with character analysis, are employed to analyze the issues in the lives of Egor and Natalya. The findings demonstrate that the idea of equality in spousal roles can be conveyed, with the hope of contributing to a shift in the reality of household life in Russia toward a new condition in which husbands and wives hold equal positions within the family.

Abstract

Abstract

This study examines the boycott by Indonesian fans against the K-pop group ATEEZ as part of the dynamics of South Korea’s cultural diplomacy in Southeast Asia. Building on the understanding of K-pop as an important instrument of soft power in South Korea’s cultural diplomacy strategy, this research highlights how regional audiences do not always passively accept such practices. Using a qualitative approach with digital discourse analysis, the study analyzes boycott-related discourses circulating on social media and in online news coverage to explore the narratives, meanings, and cultural implications of this action. The fan boycott is not merely an expression of emotional disappointment, but a form of fan activism constructed through narratives of fan contribution, regional inequality, and demands for symbolic recognition. Through digital media, Indonesian fans position themselves as non-state actors with agency in negotiating cultural relations with the K-pop industry. These findings reveal the limitations of cultural diplomacy that relies solely on global market logic and underscore that the effectiveness of soft power depends on the quality of fair and inclusive relationships with regional audiences. This study is expected to contribute to the field of cultural diplomacy by positioning Southeast Asian audiences as active subjects in the negotiation of soft power through popular culture.

Abstract

This study examines the subtitling strategies used in translating Korean terms of address into Indonesian, with a focus on how sociocultural meanings embedded in Korean address systems are conveyed in the target language. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the study analyses a corpus of dialogue excerpts taken from two Korean drama series. The findings identify seven categories of address terms: proper names, occupational titles, kinship terms, common nouns, attention-getters, pronouns, and child name-derived forms. Proper names are the most frequent category, followed by occupational titles, kinship terms, common nouns, and attention-getters, whereas pronouns and child name-based forms occur less frequently. This distribution reflects the Korean sociolinguistic preference for personalized and hierarchical forms of address that signal respect, familiarity, and social harmony. The analysis reveals six main subtitling strategies: borrowing, substitution, literal translation, explicitation, omission, and compensation. The results indicate that translating Korean terms of address requires sensitivity to sociocultural context and audiovisual constraints. These findings highlight the importance of context-sensitive decision-making in achieving pragmatic and cultural equivalence in audiovisual translation.

Abstract

It is known that proverbs have existed for a long time, but today researchers have identified many proverbs, especially those that use animal symbolism, and these proverbs are being republished on social media. This study aims to analyze the meanings and origins of these proverbs so that we can understand the context of their current use on social media. The research was conducted using a qualitative method with an in-depth semantic approach. Data were collected through social media research techniques, drawing from YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram. The findings indicate that animal symbols in Arabic proverbs contain both negative and positive elements. The use of animal symbolism in Arabic proverbs on social media is mostly intended to offer advice, while others depict human behavior in contexts such as satire, criticism, praise, and mockery.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of the humanitarian crisis and popular resistance in the poetry of Sudanese demonstrators, drawing on the documentary film Sudan, Remember Us (2024) by Hind Meddeb. Using Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), the study analyzes data that have been recontextualized through social media. The results show the use of dehumanizing lexicon (lāji'an, mumazzaqan) and hyperbolic metaphors to depict the suffering of the Sudanese people. The poetry employs intertextuality with the story of the Prophet Job to morally legitimize the victims, and is distributed through social media platforms. At the macro level, this poetry functions as a counter-discourse to deconstruct military hegemony and challenge international compassion fatigue. This phenomenon demonstrates digital poetry as an important space of resistance for oppressed groups to maintain human dignity.
